This is a key point.

Why bother hanging on to category one status if you aren't using the benefits that cat 1 provides to your advantage?

It'll totally discredit the whole thing if none or even only a few of the top clubs are involved. What's the point of having and "elite" player programmable of none of the top clubs buy into it? Nome of the top clubs willrolls old what players to pick and none of them will lose cat a status for not doing so. For the simple reason it'll total embarrassment for the FA if none of the top clubs are involved in it. There will be a loop hole Somewhere for them

If the clubs have been instrumental in pushing through this whole programme, then they will have been instrumental in setting the benchmarks of it. So it's a pretty good guess that those benchmarks will have been made by analysing what they have done in previous years in terms of bringing players through and making sure that that sort of level of graduation comfortably surpasses the new regs. Which will therefore likely mean Carling cup appearances or whatever to tick the boxes that they themselves have helped to write in the first place.

And you've made a fine contribution there yourself, if I may say so.

Turkish has a very good point. How will the FA make managers pick a team? They've tried and failed in the past.

It would have been a good point if MLG had even remotely suggested it, but I can't see that he remotely did so at any point. That might have been a genuine oversight by Turkish, but somehow I don't think so.

As for my contribution, I have nothing of particular interest to add to this thread. I do like reading what people (like MLG) have to say and with my 3 posts/day I might try and add something perhaps, but I'm fed up with having to wade through posts of petty squabbles and WUM's trying to make others look stupid. That's why I gave up paying for full membership and it's probably why so many of the interesting posters on the forum from the past are not seen here anymore. It's a shame that's all.

Appreciate that but MLG Is adamant that if clubs aren't picking youth players they'll lose cat a status. It will never happen.

the very same reason why chelsea plough loads of cash into their development squad...one day, they may unearth a world star

Or alternatively, that they can stockpile anyone who might have turned out decent with a few first team matches at the right time, and smother their ability until they emerge as an inferior player, who's not a threat to the world stars they've signed up, when they let them go.

They already are, with the homegrown rule.

I'm agreeing with you The 9......

...as it seems clear that the ambition of people like NC and NA knows no bounds and goes places where no-one had previously thought possible ..perhaps they are looking forward to the day when Saints field 11 home-grown players, or even 11 Academy graduates?.

Oh they are. How realistic that is, I'm not sure. Realistic in terms of yes they could do it but would it be Walcott and Bale quality running all the way through it? I think it's a big ask. It's not the first time this idea has been spoken about...

Saints will probably field 11 home grown players in a match at some point next season (within the parameters of the Premier League definition they only have to have been registered with an English or Welsh side for 3 seasons starting before they're 21). The idea of 11 academy graduates, however, is completely unfeasible if we want to be successful.

Even Man U's Class of '96 only made up about half the team, it's just not possible to bring through an entire side of Prem players within a short enough timescale for them all to play together.

I take it the black bits are lettering and it spells 'Saints'. If that is the case, it looks like it's being done in that horrible almost graffiti kind of style. I can't understand anyone that likes that. I think it looks crap.

There's also a picture of the mural being done, featuring players. Next thing will be people kicking off at a lack of club icons on it and only current players.

Southampton FC ‏@officialsaints Kids from two local schools were painting murals at the #SaintsFC training ground this morning with @Foundation_SFC:

I'm not sure how much of this sort of thing was done by the club before administration but its great to see the club reaching out to the local community like this again. Obviously eyeing up potential fans of the future.

  • 2 months later...
I was there last week...its amazing - the pitches are fantastic hardly a blade of grass out of spec on all pitches.

The 3g pitch is superb.

The best of everything laid on for the kids and the football was brilliant to watch.

So all the above pitches are now in place? How far away are the buildings from completion?

What looks a little odd is they have kept the farmhouse and wrapped the lower academy buildings around it.

'Tis true, the building remains. If I get a chance at the w/e I'll take some pics and email to somewhere on here to upload, but lots of it is obscured by (pilchards' now famous for spying) bushes/trees. Delighted to say I didn't see your chopper at the weekend.

of course, I don't deny that.

No-one reasonably expects that to ever happen .....except perhaps NA and NC in their wildest dreams.

These two guys are totally nuts - aren't they....I mean who on Earth would think that a bankrupted club...starting off a season in L1 with minus 10 points could possibly get to the Prem.in less than 5 years?

One thing is for sure....if we continue to turn out Academy lads at the rate we have done in the last few years, then this seasons' " quartet " is just the start.

Whilst everyone brags / highlights ..those names; Walcott, Bale and Ox-Chamberlain (ad nauseum), let's not forget some others who left the club for much humbler fees, but nevertheless made a decent career; Dyer, Surman, Best, Mills and Blackstock are the first to come to mind. Almost certainly, we will always have a few foreign imports in the club (thankfully) and competition for the remaining places will be very tough. Those who don't make it may still go onto other clubs (even if not all Prem.) and make a career for themselves.

Quite ironically that (as a fan for many decades past) .......I can recall a time when the " foreigners" in the team were; Scots ..and even Irish !

Spurs new training ground has just been finished I think and is also looking pretty good.

A family that I know through my eldest son has boys at Chelsea and Fulham. Not seen the latter's complex but went down to watch the youngest training at Chelsea on the way to picking up our older boys from the airport. Gotta say I was really impressed. They seem to have two large buildings, one for the first team and one for the other teams. Not sure of how the total indoor space and facilities compares to our plans. Could work out having all the teams including first team rubbing shoulders in the same place but not sure how the 'stars' will react.

The chap that took me along had been to Spurs a week or so back with his older boy and he said that their complex was the best he'd ever seen. If it's better than Chelsea's it must be the dog's.

Still a way to go - there are as described a few buildings up between the farmhouse through to the old car park.

The pitches as I said are amazing - I think that picture above was a previous design as the buildings are up and not in that picture

plus the 3g pitch doesnt show either.

Its a far larger area than I thought and looks brilliant compared to before.

I haven't been to any other Premier academy ground so can't compare but the whole place looks as though its not done on the cheap.

I see that the Club is actively looking to build up the Bath satellite academy again, with new Recruitment Officer and Lead Coach being sought. The Bath academy has never ceased to exist but certainly has not been to the same standard as previously for the last few years. The Bath centre is critical to our success at Academy level, bear in mind it was responsible for Gareth Bale and I think Nathan Dyer at least, almost certainly others.
