Big_Bald_Si Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 Actually, not too bothered about the article itself. http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/9609706.Saints__pair_of_aces/r/?ref=rss Can you spot the shocking spelling? lol
SuperMikey Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 Read the article earlier - both are very good players but I don't think they're the best in the Championship. In terms of performance, they've both been outstanding at most times this season, but there are better players in this league (Curtis Davies, James Tomkins, Winston Reid). I think they'll be a solid partnership next season should we go up, no need to replace either of them. Maybe bring in a younger CB to replace Jaidi/Seaborne - Shane Duffy from Everton? stevegrant Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 Tonkins plays in midfield anyway. He's only played a couple of games there recently, for most of the season he's been at centre-back alongside Abdoulaye Faye.
Jack Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 That would do my brains in as a WHU fan, playing a centre half in front of 2 centre halves, in a home game. Pretty sure Fat Sam has done that against cannon fodder sides as well recently. Shocking.

Wiggles31 Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 I admit I had some doubts about Fonte during our dodgy spell but thankfully I was wrong. They seem to get better with each game. I think in the Premiership they could look even better with more time on the ball. As for Jos. Well he is the best defender in the league with sheer ease. Bad Wolf Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 It's nice to have a CB partnership that work so well together and compliment eachother so well. We haven't really had that since Claus-Killer. I do like Martin aswell.
corky morris Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 I know this may sound harsh, but I can see the whole back 5 being changed if we go & stay in the PL for 2-3 years. My reasoning is that none of them are quick & we will becoming across pace in each & every game. However they have both done a wonderful job this year! notnowcato Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 I think Fraser and Fox will be fine at full back, should we make the Prem. Jos will do a job, I worry about Jose though.
Turkish Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 What was the name of that QPR centre back we missed out on in August...?? :-) To be fair he has been outstanding for Reading, I work in Reading and a lot of Reading and someone else fans there say that he's been their best player and if it wasn't for him they'd be no where near the top 3. London Saint Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 Jose is more comfortable on the ball and playing it from the back, but big Jos can do that too and scores goals - plus he really throws himself about and is a bit more physical than Jose. Great pairing!

david in sweden Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 (edited) Having a good pair of central defenders is always the foundation of a good side. Looking back over 50 years I can recall several top duos that could qualify for a mention. Tony Knapp and Cliff Huxford in the early 1960's John McGrath and David Walker... 10 years later. Jimmy Gabriel and .. " whoever you like" (Jim was so versatile and played in 6 diff. positions one season) Jim Steele and Mel Blyth (from the mid 70's / FA CUP squad). Chris Nicholl and Dave Watson /Colin Waldron (early 80's) Mark Wright and ?? ( he was twice as good as any other partner at the time...) Ken Monkou (worth a mention but seldom had a good partner) - However, all these memorable pairings almost pale into insignificance when you recall later names like ; Claus Lundekvam / Dean Richards and Michael Svensson (in whatever order you like )...MY best of the bunch. although my late father would have said... Len Wilkins, Eric Webber and Joe Mallett, too Jose Fonte and Jos Hooiveld ..? (get on my short list already - even for half a season), hope they're still around a few more seasons. Saints Warrior Posted 23 March, 2012 Share Posted 23 March, 2012 Jos and Fonte if not the best then must be next best. Jos has been superb and with some brillaint crucail goals, Fonte still playing consistantly well
david in sweden Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 (edited) I'm pleased for these two guys for several reasons. Fonte (a class defenderer by any reckoning) made a courageous decision to drop to an L1 side two years ago from his position as a star-player in a settled Palace side, and hopefully his reward will be as a key man in our Prem. side. Hooiveld came to SFC (already labelled a Celtic reject - by some) and was seen as a last desperate effort to get some cover in the wake of Seaborne's injury. What a shock for his critics when he not only began to stabilise the defence, but even developed a good partnership with "rookie " Aaron Martin during the period that Fonte was out injured. I took a closer look at his career stats. and saw that he is indeed a winner. An uncertain period in his teenage period with several Dutch clubs, before he went to Finland and starred in Inter Turku's League title / and League Cup win, and was voted league's best defender - two years in a row. A move to Sweden carried on this success when he was part of the AIK "double winning side " in 2009. Naturally the move to Celtic was a chance but he seems to have been cast as the scapegoat for some defeats, when others may also have been at fault. " desperate last minute signing? " ...call it what you like, but he is steadily gaining popularity at SMS. Certainly if when - we get promotion his two important goals against Wham, ([b and those 4 points[/b]) ...might well be worth their weight in gold by May - when you consider who he scored them against. Jos has a real winner's mindset, and we need that in every player in the squad. Edited 26 March, 2012 by david in sweden
Bearsy Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 Didn't Jos sign before Seaborne's "incident"? That's how I remember it. I remember thinking, oh it's lucky we just signed that new CB from Celtic!
Charlie Wayman Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 The answer to your original question is "No way!" Bearsy Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 I was trying to think who'll give us the biggest dicking next season! I think we'll get dicked by Arsenal fo' sure - we always used to get dicked by Arsenal. Newcastle I think will give us a dicking for some reason. Definitely at their place anyway. Tottenham will be dicking us if we catch them on a bad day. We'll get nothing from Manchester except dicking, obviously, Chelsea aren't really into giving teams a dicking anymore but I think they might make an exception in our case. I even think we'll get dicked at Villa and they haven't dicked anyone since 1992! Liverpool won't be dicking us tho. They're w@nk.

Really Bearsy, I don't think there on many on this site who expect us to blow away any of the aforementioned teams. I think getting one point from any of them would be regarded as a moral victory. IF promoted, we will be entering the Prem. with most of the squad we finished our L1 season with !. Unless they have hidden talents that haven't come to the fore yet, then we all surely expect to make some more experienced signings - just in order to finish safely in mid table. I think it better to consider who we might possibly get points off rather than looking for defeats in advance of the kick-offs. Looking at the present Prem. table, we see that the majority of teams are cannon-fodder for the top four/five. The rest are just pleased with survival. After 27 seasons of " survival " ..and an occasional good game, I'd just be glad to get back. If Messers Cortese and Adkins have something / someone else up their sleeves, it'll be a very pleasant surprise.
