Saw a tweet from the chief sports writer from the Telegraph saying that Saints are still an unpleasant club to deal with! Thought we had improved our image and attitude towards press! maybe not?

I thought we were a difficult club to deal with, never seen unpleasant mentioned before.

Anyway it's fine with me,we don't want to sell players that other clubs want and we don't want to pay over the odds for our acquisitions, what's wrong with that. Perhaps we have a structure that can't be contourned with a simple call to the manager.

In my experience, no. The press are very well looked after by the Club. We're not as bad as Bournemouth, either way.

I find this hilarious. I used to work alongside their 'Media Executive'.

Thats what I thought, Gordon Simpson was at Hull last night, so it cant be all bad!! The Bournemouth Echo are better off without with that complete tool of a chairman!! Just wondered why chief sports writer from telegraph would think we were unpleasant!! Doesnt matter though, 5 points clear, love it all!

The telegraph report on the game was the first one out last night and I suspect they wanted Adkins or club spokesperson to interview and then gush about us going up and what a good season we have had etc etc. I think the Guardian (Or another) wrote something about wanting to do a great article on us earlier in the season and couldnt understand the pushback they got from the club.

My guess (And that's all it is) is this probably comes from Adkins rather than Cortese. Think back to after the plymoouth game last season Adkins wouldn't accept we were promoted and would only talk about having a job to do for the last game of the season. The last thinkg he wants his players and fans to believe is that the job is already done, by reading how great they are in the papers

It's not done and dusted and nothing has been won yet and if we have upset a few journos, to make sure that doesn't happen, I'm not sure us or Cortese will be bothered.

It was Paul Hayward who had a dig at the club earlier in the season for the same thing when he worked for the Observer. So this isn't the case of a different newspaper having problems with us as such, just the same person.

I beleive it stemmed from the fact he wanted to write an article on the club but was denied access for whatever reason. Pretty hard to make judgements when we don't know the full circumstances.

Sorry, didn't read your post before replying. You are right. As I said in my post Paul Hayward was employed by the Observer (Guardian, same thing!) before moving to the Telegraph a few months ago.

Journalists as a breed think they have right of access to everyone and every place whether it is convenient or not, if our club is standing up to them and insisting it is on our terms that will not be popular with them but it's certainly popular with me!

My mate works for the press and he told me a while back that we are "difficult" to deal with, and that Cortese was awkard.

I didn't really want to get into it with him, as despite (or maybe because of ) being friends for nearly 40 years, we do tend to ***** at each other a bit. I wasn't sure whether he was saying it just to prompt a reaction from me, as after a few beers I tend to have nothing said against my team.

Being a typical press guy he does tend to think that he has a right to know everything and that people should fawn over him and answer anything he asks, so it could be a question of Cortese just not wanting to know the press and not playing the "game".

Agreed Window Cleaner...PLUS the fact that we won't let the Press / Media come in and do what THEY want and try and run OUR show.

Freedom of the Press is one thing.... abuse of priveleges is something else. If they don't like us, TOUGH I say...they don't have to come and report us.

Plenty of others will.

there are a few papers I enjoy reading on us ..but the rest... can follow the NOTW as far as I'm concerned...I'll take the TV money instead thank you!

The written media rarely report the facts; the tv and radio journalists are just lazy and churn out the same questions looking for problems and therefore get the same answers.

Hence Talk Sh*te this afternoon is dedicated to slagging off Big Fat Sam rather than praising Saints halting Hull's 11 game unbeaten run.

Credit to NA, he rarely answers the standard ' poor referee decision' question with the answer they want; and the club never posts details of player injuries etc.

We are Southampton, we do what we want !

Read a thing in my monthly Golf comic this morning about Rory and his implosion at the Masters last year. He said being in front meant he was out last and had a long time to waste and reading the papers and watching TV meant that he would see things about himself which he knew would do him no good.

So maybe our offish attitude towards the press is part of the game plan in keeping the players feet on the ground, also the Swiss are very private about their business so this could also be natural operating procedure where the press are concerned. We have seen how the Media gets managers sacked and players sold, so at arms length is not a bad thing.

A lot of people on this thread who know f*ck all about journalism, evidently.

In the interests of clarity, my opinions concern those journos I know - and I have known more than a few. I also know that there are genuine hardworking types with decent moral compasses working in journalism. Regrettably, in my experience they are in the minority and do not thrive.

Not necessarily, "unpleasant" is no doubt slightly over the top journo speak. But, from Sky Sports point of view, i've heard many times that Saints are a difficult club to deal with. I don't know why, but access is tricky and quite frustrating.
