Doncaster build up thread

Our problem is working out who to play right midfield now. No-one quite fits or works at the moment.

Yep it is. It was pretty obvious on Saturday with Chaplow.

The problem probably goes back further to the Dec/Xmas period when Morgan was filling in. Punch's return offered another option but it hasn't quite clicked. SDR looked decent yesterday and on saturday; but he's shown that starting a game is totally different proposition. Will depend if Lee is back - if he is, Guly will revert to RM. If not, think SDR has just about earned a start IMO.

Probably agree with all that, thought SDR looked good yesterday, just depends if he's suited for the a start or not. I'd have him or Guly to be fair.

Sharp has to start against his old club, surely? This is a game where he'll want to prove himself. Wondering whether Lee will be fit enough to get onto the bench - Nigel will want to start him vs the Skates if he is so he'll want to give him a bit of game time in this one to get him back ready.

Cant see us losing this.

Having been on a decent run, Donny appear to have had the stuffing knocked out of them by the Derby and Millwall results, two games in which they were really expecting to make ground on their relegation rivals. Watch Saunders Millwall postmatch, downbeat is an understatement.

Their defense is struggling with injuries - both CBs Shelton Martis and Tommy Spurr are out, so we should get some joy from set pieces/crosses and I expect NA to go for the jugular. Seems set up perfectly for a conventional wide man like SDR provided he can get his delivery right.

I doubt the gentleman's agreement personally, but I can see Adkins not playing Sharp nonetheless. I disagree with a later poster - Sharp will not want to score against his old club. All the emotions around his baby, and the support he received from Donny fans and staff at that time etc, will make him very reluctant to be the person who helps relegates them.

Denis Law didn't want score against his old ManUre club (as they were about to be relegated). But he did anyway.

Given likely injuries/gentlemens's agreements. My team:

------------ Lambert -----------------------

----------------------- De Ridder ----------

Lallana ---- Cork ----- Schneiderlin -- Chaplow

Fox ------ Hooiveld ---- Fonte ---- Richardson

----------------- Davis ----------------------

Incidentally, Donny are the only other team left in the league, after Leicester and Bristol City, who can do the double over us.

What ?

Rickie in goal and Kelvin up front ?

Have you been on the jungle juice ?

:)

i wonder if he will rest fox as he felt his groin a little hence being subbed on tuesday. same injury which forced him to miss ipswich game i think. fox is an really important player for us so nige will have to weigh up whether to risk him for donny game and help us get another 3 points on the board or save him for what is on paper a harder game at blackpool. i would worry more about harding playing at blackpool then against donny.

It seems I've ordered my tickets too late to get them posted out and have to collect them from the Ticket Office. Anyone know if there's any timelimit on when they have to be collected (eg. more than an hour before k.o.) ?

That just about covers most points and as you say, if Chung is back it looks very straight forward. The only problems going to be the tired legs that came off against Hull and a Doncaster side who will just pack the midfield and just leave someone up front on occasions, as they did at home against us. We came unstuck because we were not playing well and tried to convert 1 point into 3. Which we did but to Doncasters gain rather than ours.

I doubt Chung will start because I would have expected to hear some snippet about him by now but it would not surprise me if Chaplow or Sharp made a start, simply because it's Doncaster and how they will line up. Both Chaplow and Sharp are out of form at present, but this game could well see them thrive. Fonte should be able to move up into midfield and I feel may well be the key in breaking down Doncaster. Understand your comments about De Ridder but am not sure this will be his type of game with the space afforded to him?

Either way it's going to interesting to see what Adkins does after the master class he performed tactically against Hull. Adkins defended Guly vigorously when questioned by Solent recently, listing out all the additional things he offers when referenced against De Ridder. I don't believe that is so strong a case against Doncaster, but he is strong in the air at both ends of the pitch.

I guess NA's problem with picking a team is to try and guess if Doncaster are coming in search of 3 points or 1. If 3 then he can play Chung with his speed to catch them on the counter. I am not sure however how useful he is when a team decide to come and try and park the bus and hold out for a draw.

Its a simple battle against complacency really. Like a lot of our recent home games we simply need to score first and we should be fine. Kind of a horrible fixture though, purely because anything less than a win would be catastrophically awful (in a vacuum I mean - even if we did fail to win I'd still think we're going up).

But yeah. Its a bit of a landmine...

SCORE FIRST SAINTS!

Score first and the Donny players'll want to be on the coach so they can focus on their winnable fixtures at home. They won't expect a win and nor will they be relying on one, but the fact that the pressures off may well not help our cause.

Not sure parking the bus is an option for them. They need wins and need them fast. At this stage of the season when you are in the bottom 2 draws are of no real use.

This from Ken Tone, exactly what I thought. I wouldnt be surprised to see him come on for a last five minute cameo (assuming we're winning....which I would f*cking hope) so he can give the donny fans a wave etc. I also wouldn't be astounded to see him left off the bench altogether.

Shocking defending

even "top class" footballers weren't necessarily very good in those days. When you think on it your average team had about 6 local lads in it.Yet today's Man U or Chelsea probably has one ,two or even none at all. This is why I always find it risible when people compare today's football teams to those of yesteryear. Look at the way they stroll about and walk past defenders, your Laws,Bells and Tuarts wouldn't make half-time in a modern match, not with the physical condition that they had then.

Looking forward to the game. I really hope Lee is fit to play.

Is anyone else collecting their P*mpey tickets as well? I fear the queue will be huge due to what the OS is saying. I take it we are allowed to collect the p*mpey tickets??! I did ask when I bought them but you never know....

Their o/s says they will have a centre half available (Chimbonda) again. (I believe the last couple of games they were missing a tall centre half).

"..Saunders will be buoyed by the news that Pascal Chimbonda is back in contention after he missed out on Tuesday.."
They also say that Chung is fit

"striker Tadanari Lee will also be looking for a place in the squad following his return from injury."

They also imply that Billy can play against them (no agreement)

Rovers travel to title chasers Southampton this weekend as they face former front man Billy Sharp for the first time since his exit in the January transfer window.

Donny are on quite a decent run of form away from home and rank 15th in the division. Picked up points against Hoof Ham and Hull. I'm never any good at picking scores or finding patterns that mean anything, but I did spot this utterly useless statistic: Doncaster have not won in front of a crowd of more than 18,750 people this season. (They have only won seven all season so it doesn't mean a lot)

Home game? Check.

3pm? Check.

Key players fit? Check.

In good form? Check.

It all points to a home win. Nervous? Always.

I'm hoping we go for the throat, get an early goal and make it a fairly comfortable afternoon.

I'm really looking forward to the game tomorrow! Hope to get 3 points but slightly worried about us underestimating Donny. Then off to a 60th birthday party and best of all, my third grandchild due this week-end.

It's been a great season so far and lets hope we get what we deserve. Saints have played some superb football this season.

Sorry, just had to share that.

I would say Sharp is a definite starter tmrow reading the OS this morning....

Not only would you expect him to be hungry after recent lack of play and having to be patient on the bench, but he probably as the extra motivation of turning it on against his old team.

Having said that, does any one remember the way James Beattie reacted when he scored against us the year we got relegated from the PL ?

This could be embarrassing for us if we perform like we have done in the last 2 games, it has been woeful. However we have been decent on the road in the last few games but it is hard to see you not scoring at least 3. As for Sharp he is a life long Sheff Utd fan ,when he scored there a couple of seasons back he celebrated the goal. He is (was) a legend at S****horpe & he went crazy when he scored there. The fella just loves scoring goals & if he plays tomorrow he will score & he will celebrate (I just hope he doesn't go to mad, but will forgive him if he does). Hope your pubs are well stocked as I feel the need to get drunk before the game to numb the pain!!

Incidently we have shifted just under 500 tickets not bad considering our position & last 2 performances.

He didn't celebrate. But then Bent scored the equaliser and he went mental!!
