RinNY Posted 25 March, 2012 Posted 25 March, 2012 Exactly for what happened today: Ricky off injured, Billy Sharp scores the two goals to get us the win. You can't rely on one main striker all season long. That's plain enough, no?
david in sweden Posted 25 March, 2012 Posted 25 March, 2012 Seems to have been an odd decision. I'm not sure he's good enough for the Premiership, so if we thought he wasn't 'Saints fit' then why buy him? Seems to be a lot of money for a player that's going to sit on the bench most of the time. You might argue that his impact has been to make Lambert and Lee up their games, but that doesn't seem to ring true. Er ..sorry ? what was the question again ?
sir_fred Posted 25 March, 2012 Posted 25 March, 2012 The strenght in deep within the squad is why I think we will make it. "And no WE're gonna believe it, and now we're gonna believe it. The Saints are going up."
Deano6 Posted 25 March, 2012 Posted 25 March, 2012 I love these threads. They always go the same way. Can someone start one on Lee Barnard before the Blackpool game please?
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 (edited) http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~2688773,00.html Billy said back in March that he wanted to play his part in getting us promoted. 9 goals, 8 in the last 8 games?, I think you did that fella. Good stuff. Edited 29 April, 2012 by Ivan Katalinic's 'tache
Robsk II Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 Agreed IK't - Talk about proving the doubters wrong. He's been excellent in the latter part of the season.
Thedelldays Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 sharp has been brilliant not the quickest but excellent taking his chances in the area
ottery st mary Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 I believe he will get a lot fitter, lose some weight..pre season...NO more pies our Billy;) and therefore be known thereafter as Billy Sharper.. He will be a good top goalscorer, alongside Rikeeee and Lee in the big boyz league..
RobM Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 He has been excellent for us, certainly achieving his aim of helping us get promoted! Just as pleasing is the genius move of holding him back until he was ready though, something that baffled many at the time. Despite spending a big chunk of cash on him and despite his form at Doncaster, NA didn't introduce him fully until he was ready. Brave, but paid off.
sotonjoe Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 He has done a job and seems like a nice bloke. I've been disappointed to see how often he loses his one-on-ones due to his lack of pace though. It will be interesting to see how he - and the other strikers to be fair - does in the Prem.
Red&White Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 Hasn't exactly had a chance to show us what he can do yet has he? Lets not write him off too hastily eh? This.................. Christ give the man a chance eh !
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 It's a interesting theoretical question - if Lee had not lost his place due to injury would we have finished the season in a more convincing fashion ? We can never know the answer of course, but for what its worth I just don't see Tadanari Lee scoring nearly as frequently as Billy Sharp has done of late. Make no mistake, Billy Sharp is a force to be reckoned with at this level, and if we can get him fitter then I wouldn't rule out the possibility of him making his mark at Premier League level too.
melmacian_saint Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 I know I'm new here and all but I must say I'm quite disappointed by this forum's reaction to such a great moment for the club. Instead of praise and positivity, people were quick to stump on fringe players, accuse others of being too crap for PL standards, throw rumours about key people off the pitch abandoning the project (and consquently judging them on thos rumours)... 1 day into the PL adventure and people are already acting like we're down. Clearly nothing was learned by the fans from the club's demise and maybe some people didn't deserve the actual end of our June 2009 saga.

Think you're overreacting a bit here, who is acting like we're already down?
shurlock Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 When he was put through on goal in the first half and lost the half of yard he had on the defender, causing him to cut inside was a perfect illustration of just how much we need some pace.
Mowgli Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 When he was put through on goal in the first half and lost the half of yard he had on the defender, causing him to cut inside was a perfect illustration of just how much we need some pace. Thought that was a good tackle by Cranie though. He has done the business no question and provides an alternative to Lee up front with Lambert. Lee has pace and will lose his marker whilst Sharp takes the defender with him and uses his strength to hold him off
Whitey Grandad Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 Give him a few more months and I'm sure he will get better still.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 sharp has been brilliant not the quickest but excellent taking his chances in the area So a striker then? Putting the ball in the next, what he's paid to do? This thread shows how pathetic and hysterical fans can be. No doubt it won't be long until another signing is questioned on the basis of 45 mins, and I bet the same lot slating Billy will be at it again, having learned nothing.
Monk Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 After the year he has had, his nipper would be very, very proud of how well he has conducted himself.
krissyboy31 Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 Was very emotional when Clem tried to interview him after the game on FLS. Could see he was totally overwhelmed.
Deano6 Posted 30 April, 2012 Posted 30 April, 2012 Not sure if posted before, but I've only just seen this. Absolutely terrible what he went through. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/mar/23/billy-sharp-southampton-doncaster Billy Sharp - what a guy!

Fan The Flames Posted 30 April, 2012 Posted 30 April, 2012 When he was put through on goal in the first half and lost the half of yard he had on the defender, causing him to cut inside was a perfect illustration of just how much we need some pace. He was caught because the had the ball and the defender didn't, his run was perfect and his touch was good. Maybe when the defender was coming he could have prodded the ball forward, but hind sight and all that or naybr he wad trying for a pen for Rickie.
Foxstone Posted 30 April, 2012 Posted 30 April, 2012 Billy is as strong as an ox and he knows where the net is - He will do a great job for us next season.

Think something similar happened against reading or the skates. Not saying he doesn't have other attributes. As well as finishing, his hold up play has really improved. Almost impossible to knock him off the ball when he has it in close control. But we're going to need some pace to really exploit that, especially as Lambert offers something similar.
