"Typical Saints" will probably mess it up after all

Stop worrying people. We're going up. Let's start getting used to it.

This isn't counting chickens, or gloating, or tempting fate.

For us to secure going up we need about ten points to hit 85 which is a decent guess of the requirement for second. Ten points in eight games. So not much more than a point a game. Three wins and a draw. 1.25 points a game - basically relegation form. To get promoted. So even if the wheels do come off, we'll probably go up automatically anyway. Good, eh?

It makes me laugh there are people who will still say "it's typical saints, we'll mess it up".

Really?

People still associate "typical Saints" with failure despite us now in our third consecutive season of winning pretty much every game we play.

"Typical Saints" means winning.

"Typical Saints" means clean sheet, after clean sheet, after clean sheet.

"Typical Saints" means goals, goals, goals.

"Typical Saints" means we are Southampton, we're top of the league.

"Typical Saints" means going to Wembley and lifting a trophy

"Typical Saints" relentlessly hounding 300-match unbeaten Huddersfield out of the promotion race.

"Typical Saints" means top of the Championship first season back pretty much from day one to March.

"Typical Saints" means player of the season and the stand out managerial performance of the year.

"Typical Saints" means no megastars apart from our homemade ones, no greedy b astar ds on fat salaries, and brilliant team spirit.

"Typical Saints" means we're going to do this thing.

Start believing everyone.

I said it at the end of the Season when we had a debate about "The Sash Shirt"

That shirt reflected a new beginning.

I've felt all year that we could do it with the football we have played and the attitude of the Management and Players.

Fact is though, like everyone else on here. I really couldn't believe it had happened to us.

But you are right. As long as everyone draws a line under tonights' result, this could be a new world we inhabit

Much as I'm over "typical Saints" being crap, I'm not YET so over-confident that we're going up. Give it a few weeks and a few more wins, then maybe. But as we've seen tonight, one set of results can make things look very different.

I will happily accept that my "drop to 5th prior to playing the Skates" and "Birmingham to win 12 of 13" entries in the BBC Predictor a few weeks back look off the mark now.

Tonight's performance and result were excellent, we have the bottom 3 to play at home, along with our nearest challengers. 12 points there and we're in touching distance... but let's just get there first.

Then we can see what "typical Saints" in the Prem looks like, and hope that's not "typical" too.

CB Fry you could be right but having followed us for over 45 years I never take things for granted.

I can see what you are saying and to think we may throw this away now feels like doing these players an injustice

however, its not easy forgetting your history.

Fantastic result tonight, but come Saturday I will still be nervous as hell and until mathmatics says we are up

will not be able to relax.

My dad still talks about the Charlie Wayman season he got injured and we never went up.

Love your post though.

After almost 40 years of watching Saints I'm still terrified!!!

I still can't get used to us pulling out results when it really matters but as each week goes by, my doubts are lessening and my belief is increasing. After tonight I'm even more convinced that we are no longer the Saints of old.

I'm now firmly beginning to believe we can do this, get promoted and be the Champions too!

Good post, and great win tonight - but hold on to your hats fellas coz ever the pessimist has arrived...!! Although I'm now more 'cautiously optimistic' than I have ever been at any stage this season, I still think we need to maintain our focus. This is a manic league, just look at some of the results tonight, Forest went about nine years earlier this season and couldn't hit a barn door - went to Leeds and smashed in 7. Reading were in locomotive gear, unstoppable and got turned over by Posh, even the phew managed to do a good Brum side for four - so as I say, strange things can happen.

Not trying to put a downer on anything - because even I'm dusting off Davey Jones (RIP) Greatest Hits, but it's not quite time yet for the large lass in the centre circle to start belting one out.

Don't worry I'm sure typical saints will reappaer next season in the PL. Thing is Typical saints have been about for 20-25 years while the new saints you describe have only been around three years which would make them Atypical saints wouldn't it?

Er, here's how the Tote views it:

Southampton 4/9

West Ham 4/1

Reading 4/1

Not that I'm counting any chickens. But boy, my 14/1 e/w is looking fairly tasty!! :) I wonder if Fred knew that was sitting in their libailities before he bought the old nanny goat! (Mind you, he took a packet off me at Cheltenham so we're about evens...)

Great post CB Fry, and totally agree. I said at the end of last season we would go straight up again, have repeated it all season and still believe. There is a desire, a togetherness in the team; they work for each other and all have the common goal of promotion. 4 wins and I think the champagne can start to flow!

Dont know what to think really - the FACT is there is still a long way to go with 24 or 27 points available to the top 3 so there can easily be some twists and turns to come yet and there probably will be - what w ehave seen this season is no different to any other club at the top - look at Man City, lost to Swansea (unexpected) then come back and win 2-1 against Chelsea - happens everywhere. We have lost unexpectedly, but made up for this with some excellent results agaisnt WHU, Birmingham, Reading away comeback, Leeds away, etc.

Doncaster at home WILL be tough, they are fighting for their lives and no matter what is said in training or the dressing room, I believe part of the problem is that in the past we have lost such 'statistically easier' games because we have not been psycologically 'ruthless' - in a awy we are TOO nice! We have players that are decent guys, top blokes who we can be proud of having at the club, but now they need to be a bit nasty and selfish and thrash these teams. Looking at the fixtures, I still think 90 will be needed to win it and 88 or so for second - 85 will see someone dissapointed in 3rd.

Its in our hands now.

'Typical Saints'? Well I linked to think typical Saints is now how we responded to the Pressure from Huddersfield last season - just matched them win for win and broke their spirit in the end - but for the poor start and 3 games before Nige arrived, we would have beaten Brighton to top spot IMHO.

Fitzhugh - I am sure you posted something very similar about this time last season! ;-)

Whatever happens and mean this, even if we did miss out on an auto spot, we should look at what Nige and this squad has achieved and be proud - not only in the points total and finish, but in the way they play the game, the unity and enjoyment they obviously have in wearing the shirt with pride. For me, Promotio is not just about the fans and teh club as a whole, but for players like Kelvin and Lambo - work so hard, give eveything and really deserve their chance in the top flight and the extra cash they will have earned the hard way - not like the 'kids' with diamond studs and easy money that tempts promising youngsters away far too early. These guys, like MLT and Chrissy Marsden, are what I like to think of as 'Typical saints'

We wont 'blow it', we wont 'waste the opportunity' - we will do our best, work hard and keep our feet on the ground - if that is not enough, fair play to those who beat us. BUt Ihave a sneaking suspicion that we will win this come the end of April.

I know what you mean, but some words of wisdom that encourage me :

Your past... is not your future !

(not as if we are going where no Saint has gone before ...apologies to Capt.Kirk)...

but we are gradually finding our way back to our Spiritual home - The Premiership .

The way i see it now is that pre Marcus Saints probably would have ****ed it up, sure us older supporters can think of plenty of games against "easy" teams that we should have steamroller them but somehow managed to screw it up big time.

BUT since the Marcus rescue I have seen a different Saints and a winning mentality and a never say die (Millwall very fresh in the mind) Some people laugh at all the atkinisums but his positive attitude and positive thinking seems to have rubbed off on the team.

Anyone would think we were talking about Accrington Stanley. I've supported Saints for 45 years and I've seen plenty of highs. Promotion to the old first division. Cup Final win against Moan U. Two more cup finals. Runners up to Liverpool in Div 1. A trip to Steau Bucaherest. So let's not forget our history too quickly. They were great days. What I have not witnessed is a Saints team that has actually finished a season as Champons. I'm hoping.....

To be fair, finishing second to Liverpool by three points, having lost Stevie Moran to injury was as good as winning the league. Liverpool were unstoppable and we were one win from winning the football league as a provincial club from the south coast... It would have been one hell of an achievement and I count that season as my best ever supporting Saints. Possibly until now! :)

Like Walsall away and Rochdale last season you mean ? Or Bristol City (twice) or Doncaster this time around ? ;)

The mark of a BIG Club is to win the must win games and then lose to a minnow - evidence: Manchester United 2 Blckburn Rovers 3.

But United will still win the league because now they're going into overdrive.

Which is exactly what we MUST do and WILL do if Adkins knows his onions.

I was delighted to read Rickie's comments after his recent award - it counts for nothing if the team don't win the league!
