Hull 0 - 2 Saints - Post Match Reaction Thread

following the previous few years, 2010 was pretty good.

2011 was amazing.

But 2012 is shaping up to be legendary.

Nige is right, we have to keep our feet on the ground, there's still work to do - but tonight's effort could define the season.

This is the first time in about four months that the rest of the divison is soiling themselves at the thought of playing us.

Nice timing.

Keep on driving that bus Nige, up through the gears me old mucker....

Some git linked this on twitter.

But, wow, what a set of results tonight. Not sure anything can knock me off my perch.

As for the game, a team that has 11 in a row no losses we made then ordinary, could of swore on radio after Adz miss would be 4-0.

Bring on Donny.

disclaimer, hammered while writing this....

Looking at the upcoming fixtures, the Blackpool (A) game looks the biggest test. If we can get 10 points from next 4 games, we may be able to go up against Reading! (On TV, which would be nice!)

Otherwise Peterborough away looks the most likely...

I am almost at the point of declaring we will go up now, but know that there are still 8 games left and anything can happen

Yes, let's get the next four games under our belts and then see how it looks.

But I have a feeling that Home v Reading may well have a carnival feel about it.

Just back from the game. Solid professional result no doubt about it. Jos was man mountain won everything in the air and topped it off with a goal. Excellent display all round. Was going to be a happy man with a draw but starting to believe it could happen and saints are on their way up!!

Just did a predictor and had us losing against Blackpool, Reading, Boro and another team and drawing against Palace. We still went up on 88 points with West Ham closely behind on 87. But to be fair I had Reading & West Ham winning most of their games. It really is in our hands now. If we can play Hull and beat them, whats not to say we can beat Boro, Palace, Reading?

Every three points brings us that little bit closer. The good thing is our defence even when under the cosh is looking excellent. Jos & Fonte have started to build a real formidable partnership at the back. Thats the key to us closing out games like we did against Leeds, Hull and West Ham.

Just got back and these are my thoughts....

I didn't think it was quite as comortable as some on here seem to be claiming it was. The build-up to our first goal was lovely and deserved a goal, but there was more than a slight suspicion of handball from Jose before he crossed for Jos to stick away the second. Thankfully, the ref was pretty poor tonight so he didn't see it and the goal stood.

Lallana reeeeeeally should have scored when he got put clean through in the first half - it looked harder to miss from where he was but we were up the other end of the ground so it was difficult to see just how tight the angle was. It was evened up a little later on when Hull got in behind from the right wing and the striker who had managed to get goalside of our defense blazed over from 6 yards when he looked odds-on to stick it away.

I thought we lacked a little bit in midfield at times and gave the ball away far too cheaply. Cork and Morgan never seemed to get any time to play the ball and looked rushed which might explain why we never really got our passing game going.

Kelvin made a couple of decent saves in quick succession near the end, although they were saves you would expect him to make to be fair, but apart from the goals we didn't test their keeper at all. Can't really remember much in the way of clear chances.

Lambert had a very quiet night by his standards. He won a lot of headers but invariably there was nobody on his wavelength to latch on to them. Lallana has had many better games than this but did well in the build-up to the first goal and caused a few problems down their right.

Jos and Jose seemed to cope very well with pretty much everything that was thrown at them, except for one scary moment when Jos miscontrolled in our area and nearly let their striker in with a clear shot, but he recovered well. Fox had a good game on the right but I thought Richardson got caught napping a couple of times and gave their let winger too much space at times.

My only real gripe of the night was Puncheon. He was an absolute waste of space. Offered nothing going forward, and although he did track back and help out in defence he was far too static. There was one moment when he came back to win the ball and laid it off to Frazer, and he had acres of space to then run into but he just stood there ballwatching. He was always too far infield or too close to Richardson to ever be effective, and I don't remember him making any kind of meaningful contribution. As soon as De Ridder came on and went to the right wing, immediately he got down the channel and started causing problems to the Hull defence who had, up until that point, had a pathetically easy ride down their left.

It wasn't pretty, but it was a solid team performance overall. Never panicked and looked calm and assured. We saw earlier in the season with the game away at Reading how teams can press us hard and snuff out our attack, so it is nice to know that we can go away to a very well organised and in-form team like Hull, who employed the same tactic of trying to shut down our midfield, and still come away with the 3 points.

With the other results going our way as well, I'm a very happy fan tonight.

Err... Some dodgy Maths here - but not as dodgy as your prediction that we will lose against 'another team' by which I can only assume you mean Pompey! If we lost four games and drew another, that would leave us winning only three and netting just ten points, making a grand total of 85 - not 88!

A great read - thanks for finding that.

The last paragraph needs highlighting...

"Nevertheless, on that premise alone, I can happily remain proud of my team. And of the ten fixtures left, it's nailed on we'll not face anyone with the same calibre as Southampton - West Ham included. Indeed, it is probably safe to say, this Tuesday evening, there go the champions... "

Just re done the BBC Championship predictor, have us finishing second to West Ham.We have still to go to Blackpool, Boro and Peterboro and Palace will not be easy.

I have been harsh on us and easier on Reading and West Ham so it is fingers cross time, get behind the boys and hopefully happy days

Just woken up not knowing where the f**k where I am,the sound of industrial machinery droning in my ears. Could be hell, not hull. Still who cares after last night's set of results.*

Like others say,it was a gritty performance but it was no Watford. Despite what was said about the pitch, the game was played on the deck and ball zipped around as if it was the truest Augusta green. It was an enjoyable game -and thought Hull were a decent side with bags of energy and potential.

Like Millwall,we started brightly -and our first chance came after a lovely cross from Guly which Lambert headed at the keeper.Lallana then went close meeting Fox's cross first time that would have gone in had it been steered either side of the GK.The goal was coming and it duly came.

Hull pressed well and got plenty of width-they use the wings as much as any team I've seen this season -and found their men quickly and very accurately. Plenty of their play came down our right -and Richardson and Puncheon were often caught too narrow.Fox also kept getting dragged across from crosses, leaving their man -king I think- unmarked.he had three chances from identical positions -one he lashed against the bar.on another night it might have been a different story.

Hull played the offside trap to good effect and we kept getting done. But Lallana did spring it -and went through one on one, missing a sitter.Dont think the ball bobbled;just that the pace of taking the ball around the keeper caused him to slice it. It was a miss we could have dwelt on-as a couple of the flask, blanket *and macvitties crowd around me were.Thankfully everyone felt a little better after Hull missed a gilt-edged chance from 5 yards following good work down our left.

We tightened things up second half.Cork went to the left to give Fox a bit more protection&SDR came on and again was a breath of fresh air.Puncheon moved more central where he looked more comfortable. They also changed things (enforced?),bringing Mcclean on,though the result was that looked a bit more one dimensional and had a large bearing on the dynamic of the 2nd half.

Our second goal was fantastic -surreal to see the two CBs linking up at the other end of the pitch-and to think some doubted they could play together.

After that Hull huffed and puffed and brought a few saves out of KD from distance but we held on quite comfortably and even had a few sniffs on the break.

An excellent, disciplined performance and having been to Leeds and 'Wall, I it was possibly the most satisfying performance of the lot. My motm was morgan-don't know what it is about away games but he saves his best performances for them.Jos was also very good, though Fonte had a few wobbles.Nice to see Lambert have a quiet game -Chester would be on my HCDAJFU list for the summer-as the likes of Guly stepped up and again ran their socks off and showed good awareness. Finally,SDR was a proper handful. The team is picking itself at the moment with the exception of RM,NA's biggest positional headache-possibly he's earned a start.

Once last thought:it was great to return here after the last visit when we lost 5-0 in the mist and rain.Back then Hull were flying and we were pinning our hopes on vincent pericard to stave off relegation, unaware those efforts would be cruelly irrelevant the following season.

Incredible that was almost exactly 4 years ago to the day. What a ride, what a transformation.

Great win. Great results else where. I only listened to the game on solent so I tend not to comment much when I only have whispering Daves point of view but last night sounded very much like a good night for the defence (who even provided the goals) I had this down as a tricky game so great result. I'm starting to think I might actually see saints see became league champions at last ( to add to seeing them win acup final two things I thought I'd never see in my lifetime)

Happy days

A fantastic result for a match that the form table showed to be difficult. I listened to the Radio Solent commentary and simultaneoulsy watched the WH v Middlesbrough game.

One thing that hasn't been covered on this thread yet as far as I can see, is the reason that Guly was substituted, when it appeared that he was having a good game. The radio commentators were mystified and said that they would ask Adkins for an explanation. I have read his interview on the official site, but it is not covered. So was the change purely tactical? The scoreline shows that we must have been doing something right against the meanest defence in the division, so if it was tactical, the result justified it.

But one of the most satisfying aspects of the match was that the second goal was as a result of one CB giving an assist to the other and in open play rather than a set piece. How can any team try to mark us out of the match when one of our CBs has scored 6 goals this season?

Just a great night all round for the Saints.

Another few more weeks to push on and with any luck we could well be promoted before the last game of the season. Still a long way to go yet but the one good thing in our favour is that this squad knows how to win and win when under pressure.

Nice read that!

On the flipside however..

One of the best around IMO, particularly like this gem

"..Olly would have been ideal to run the midfield and win the midfield battles against Saint's big centre midfielders Guly and Do Prado."

Must have played a blinder :)

here you are.To be honest I've never seen it advertised as anything other than an end of season event.True that I haven't followed it much though.

True, it's not actually called a promotion party...but you can tell most of them are thinking it. Even the OP says "not calling it anything so as not to tempt fate".

First chance to post since the game, what a cracking set of results! I was out drinking and was following it on SSN in the bar. I cheered Peterborough and Middlesbrough's goals just as loudly as ours! WE'RE SO CLOSE NOW.

Also, anyone seen Hooiveld's interview on saintsplayer? The bloke is a total legend.

Just back after stopping over the night in Hull.

Thought the first half was a surprisingly open, end to end game, both teams could have got a couple. Hull knocked it around really well at times and the last 20 minutes of the 2nd half, they were one of the best sides I've seen this year.

We did a really good job in the 2nd half of shutting the game out, slowing it down at the right moments and being a threat on the break, De Ridder was excellent at that and we finished the game pretty comfortably at the end. My man of the match for what its worth would be Schneiderlin, excellent, controlled display as usual.

Tried to go out in Hull after the game, the quitest, deadest city we've ever been to, hunted high and low and found one pub open till midnight and that was it. Locals definitely a bit "different" up there as well.
