Trolls

Back in the first year of World of Warcrafts life I became a fairly well known figure on the server I played on. I had never been anyone popular at school and I quite enjoyed the experience at first. It quickly turned sour and I ended up having to cut ties and play elsewhere to avoid the scarily consistent bullies. The level of juvenile cruelty and bullying seem to be all too common in it and similar other games. I think without directly bearing witness to an emotional response it's easy to disconnect yourself from what you are doing to someone else.

Personally I don't think p/ss taking and banter is a problem, but of course there are lines. I've crossed these lines in the past and there is one episode that I do genuinely feel bad about. That said laughing at Verbal is OK.

Nothing wrong with banter but like you say, there is a line. That line is getting crossed far too often. We saw it recently with Billy Sharps twitter. Also that guy from Wales the other day who went too far with the Muamba tweets. Fortunately these people are now being exposed and it may start to put people off.

Find it odd in that programme that the trolls seem to be in their 40s and dedicating their lives to trolling. Very sad

True. I spend half my "real" life taking the **** out of friends (and family) It's always done with a smile so they (hopefully) know it's good natured, or totally deadpan, in which case it takes a while to sink in but realisation dawns on their faces eventually. I would be horrified if I actually caused offense. (Cue people who know me coming on with some "now you mention it there was that time...." comments)

Online I have often typed out similar comments to those I would say to someone's face then deleted them - having read them it was easy to see how they could be taken in the wrong context, or the reader put the wrong interpretation on them (even with the use of ;) :( etc).

Not denying for a moment there are genuine trolls who can be extremely offensive deliberately but there are times it can be down to simple misunderstandings and/or baldy worded messages.

(Not talking specifics or you here Wurzel but just general observations)

But why? What is it with the Brit Psyche that means that "you have to take the p1ss?" Is it some entrenched feeling of inferiority? Having to make someone else be laughed at for fear of others laughing at you?

From there it is only one small step to Bullying. It may not seem like that to the one giving it, but it CAN be like that to the one receiving it. The serial p1ss taker tends to become the serial loud mouth who becomes the serial troll. Once you get the chance to step away a little you can often see they are actually a serial Bore.

It is also from my days playing Village Cricket yonks ago, it was always the ones who did the most p1ss taking who got really wound up WHEN people found an opportunity to do it back to them.

A lot of it comes down to Intellect, someone with a really sharp Intellect can actually be funny when they p1ss take, it is a laugh based on timing or situation, but a lot of the time from many people it is simply demeaning and spiteful.

Life is a one off, I just find it very sad that many choose to live it in, what is in reality, a very negative way.

That was a good article and the "Never try and have the last word with a troll" line is very accurate.

Downside is, when we get up to the PL, this forum will get busier. The trolls will become more annoying to everyone

trolls are not amusing, they are not clever, they should simply be quietly ignored and pitied for living such shallow miserable lives

Yep, can't disagree with that. I'd like to think I come under you're Sharp Intellect category, (not to mention amazing wit and repartee) ;) Any **** taking does tend to be spur of the moment response to situations. But I agree, any pre-meditated ****-taking is indeed no different than bullying. Probably why it doesn't always work when used in the written form. If it's an instant comeback (as it would be verbally) it would probably/hopefully be appreciated as a bit of fun, but sometimes it may not be read until much later by which time the "mood" can be lost.

As for genuine deliberate trolls, I am glad Police are getting involved. Just because it's written on the web (and often anonymously) doesn't make it any less offensive, it should be treated as if it was spoken face to face. Anyone hiding behind a keyboard typing things they wouldn't be prepared to say in person are very sad individuals probably in need of help IMO
