Doing the double over teams

Isn't that two wins over Millwall this season? With our home record, surely most wins we get away mean another double? Can somebody who can be bothered check how many doubles we've got so far and how many we can still get? Dunno if anyone knows the most we've had.

No doubt about it, on paper this is an impressive season in terms of doing the double and going unbeaten against teams.

However, the Bristol City results stick out as a black mark, and I still fear we are going to pay for them at the end of April.

Would you be happier if West Ham had done the double over us? You can reel out all the ifs, buts and maybes you like, but at the end of the day every team has its "black mark(s)". If me auntie had b*llocks she'd be me uncle

Look at the table, FFS

We are TOP.

BC are in the position above the relegation zone.

They did the double over US. Totally f**king ridiculous. There's no "ifs" or "buts" about it - if we dont go up because of losing in the playoffs, we will look at those two utterly cr*p performances.

Things like this happen. It's called sport. Didn't Rochdale do the double over us last season? Water under the bridge now.

Not sure what you're getting at Alpine, seems utterly stupid thing to be focusing on.

You don't seem to get this league. Year in, year out, teams beat each other from top to bottom.

Man Utd have had defeats this year against teams they should have beaten for example. But they're still up there fightng now, just as we are.

It's pointless and screams of someone trying their absolute hardest to find something negative out of an utterly positive situation. As others have said, if you can't enjoy this year then you might as well give up supporting as it quite clearly brings you no pleasure.

He's focusing on negatives. Sport is not a mathematic equation, it's not a question of certainties over 'lesser' opposition, it simply doesn't work like that but nonetheless a defeat or two against someone low is a focal point to him.

It was an anomaly, a case of sh*t happens, but that's not good enough. Not for Alps. Bless his little cotton socks.

Over the course of a season, every team is going to lose games they shouldn't; lose games they don't deserve to and win games undeservedly and beyond expectation.

You can't just isolate one or two results and apply these to the final reckoning as if these results are somehow more definitive or more influential than the other 44.

Saints have performed enormously beyond expectations. But that simply doesn't mean you can expect us to win every game in which we started as favourites.

Man Utd lost at home to Blackburn 3-2. A staggering result. But any Man Utd fan who bleats about how they might not win the league because of this is not been objective.

If I had the choice, I'd rather Bristol City did the double over us then Reading or West Ham

Exactly, Alpine is just being silly. If we're nowhere close to Bristol in the League, it doesn't matter as such that they beat us twice. It's still 0 points from 2 random games. We might just as well have won the home game and lost at Barnsley for all the difference it would have made.

Wham have take just 1 point in 3 games against us and Reading so far. That could be far more costly at the end of the season if you want to look at isolated results.

I cannot believe the utter stupidity present on this thread.

If we end up in 3rd place, adrift of an auto promotion spot by something like 2 points, I will point out that losing to BC at home as the day we threw away promotion.

All this "bound to lose the odd game" is a load of CR*P. They are a team that have occupied one of the bottom spots of the table all season long - they are there for a reason, just as we are (currently) top for a reason. If you cant refer to form as some form of determination as to how a game will finish, and the whole process is as random as some of you mongs want to claim (for the benefit of excusing that result), why do you idiots spend so much time analysing the run in, and why are you confident that we will win promotion ? After all, its all a game a chance, isnt it ?

I note the revisionists are already sweeping our dire form in December and January under the carpet.

Alpine, I can't comment on your views on other aspects of life but, when it comes to football, do you accept that you're generally quite a negative person? What are your views about what others have said about you on this thread, particularly the poster questioning why you follow Saints when you clearly get very little enjoyment from the good times? Serious questions, I'm not trying to get a "bite". And for the record I have a lot more respect for you than some of the wannabe hooligans we get on here!

Captain Hindsight. You will never be wrong.

So if we don't go up or win the league now it will be because of a result from December not our resutls over the next 9 games?

If we miss out by only a couple of points, yes.

My reasoning is we can maybe sustain the 2 points a game until the end (2.2 points over the last 10 games). By any normal standards, 2 points per game is good. But West Ham (1.7 points per game over last 10) might manage to step things up higher than that. Reading are currently running at 2.8 points per game, and withstand a little loss of form and still have a higher rate than us.

What I am trying to say is, if we hadnt lost really stupid games, we could have a sustainable level of performance between now and the end of the season and go up. Now, I fear we need a superhuman effort on a par with last season, which is a big ask.

I follow Saints because I am born and bred Southampton through-and-through, and when you live away from the place you were brought up in it is logical to try to a link to keep identifying yourself with the place. If we had any other prominent sporting teams, maybe I would follow them as much.

I also do enjoy watching football, though I admit I get more pleasure from my kids teams than Saints. Sorry, but its the truth. I dont mind my kids stuffing or getting stuffed, but all this grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory that Saints are synonomous for gets on my tits.

Enough ?
