Saint Without a Halo Posted 17 March, 2012 Share Posted 17 March, 2012 As far as pens are concered we are the Man u of the championship! However the more possession you have and the greater length of time you play in the oppositions half the more likely you are to get a Pen!

Micky Posted 17 March, 2012 Share Posted 17 March, 2012 This is why I've never understood fans having a go at 'big clubs' for pens. They see the number awarding and assume it's biassed, but in reality, Man Utd, Barcelona, whoever is top of a league will spend more time attacking, have more chances and more of the ball. It's just common sense to expect more penalties. We see defenders with hands all over Lambert ever week. Not surprised he's won so many. Likewise Lallana takes on defenders in the area most weeks, so again we'll get a fair few. TBF, I think the big penalty debate surrounding Man Utd was not about the number of pens they were given, it was more centered on the fact that an away team had not been awarded a penalty at OT for many years. david in sweden Posted 17 March, 2012 Share Posted 17 March, 2012 (edited) Without going berserk and starting another *** Ricky for England thread, can someone at least consider that a player with his record of converted penalties must surely be good to have on the England bench - if we have a tournament with games that may go to extra time... and penalties. Whatever common sense / logic there may be NOT playing a Championship player in the national side, it surely is more sensible to have someone with his record available - especially with abysmal history of England exiting from competitions because of the lack of players unable to convert a penalty at a crucial moment. I noted that Ricky scored from penalties twice in 3 minutes at the end of a hard game ... and against 88 times capped Maik Taylor. *** There is a precedent for players outside the Premiership playing for England. Of course, Terry Paine in the 1960's and in the 1966 World Cup squad. Most of Mick Channon's England games were whilst we were Div.2 (as it was then) and the legendary Steve Bull of Wolves played 14 times for England (1989-90) ...whilst Wolves were still in Div.2. david in sweden Posted 18 March, 2012 Share Posted 18 March, 2012 (edited) On the matter of penalties, Ricky has scored every time he's taken one (?) since signing and a while back someone wrote that he had around 22-24 ? and he's scored a few more since then. Now I'm wondering ....how that might compare with MLTs record of consecutive penalty goals..? OF COURSE ! We know MLT scored 48 of 49 attempts...but does anyone know which one (number) Matt missed (?). Was it early on in his career, or .....when ? Ricky still has a way to go before he catches up to MLT s record, but I have a feeling that he might now have broken the Football League record for the number of consecutive penalties - without missing, that is... He missed at the Dell agaist Notts Forest. Saved by Mark Crossley. Matty hit the rebound over the bar. Not sure exactly what season, but it was around 1992. In the same game he scored with an extroadinary left foot volley from outside the box, one of his best goals as far as I'm concerned.

It's about professionalism. We've only given away 1 at home this season (and 1 away but that was Sharp and strikers shouldn't attempt tackles in their own box, they should just shepherd the player wide until a defender gets on the job).Next season I hope we'll have defenders that don't give away penalties or score own goals, cos looking at Torres today and imagining him against Frazer or Jose..well it's a bit frightening. markr27 Posted 18 March, 2012 Share Posted 18 March, 2012 Nine pens for the Saints off the top of my head 1 Birmingham (H) 2 & 3 Watford (H) 4 & 5 Brighton (H) 6 Cardiff (H) 7 Watford (A) 8 & 9 Millwall (A) Can only think of 2 against, West Ham and possibly Palace in the Cup? But the teams at the top seem to get the most penalties,Us,West Ham and Reading (but Reading miss nearly all of theirs) Can't be a coincidence Edited 18 March, 2012 by Window Cleaner
SaintBobby Posted 18 March, 2012 Share Posted 18 March, 2012 I don't have the stats to hand, but I would suspect that successful, attacking teams get flagged for offside measurably more often than struggling teams. if so, this is rarely used to suggest that the officials favour the underdogs.
