Millwall 2 Southampton 3 - Post Match Reaction

Bit worried about Billy Sharp. He gets four mentions in the BBC live report of the game: (62:04) Dean Hammond leaves the field to be replaced by Billy Sharp. (74.42) Free kick awarded for a foul by Billy Sharp on Jack Smith. (90:00+1:07) Billy Sharp is caught offside. (90:00 + 2:11) Billy Sharp handles the ball and concedes a free kick. It will only be when the full 2nd half goes up on the OS that it will be possible to judge this, but its not encouraging and with Adkins not seeming to make much use of him, I would think he must be getting quite demoralised.

Quite ridiculous way to judge a player. He was good today and gave us a better option when he came on.

to be honest it must be hard coming into a group of players that have been together for almost an entire season.

Tad is different basically because he's well...different.

If you take a little more care to read what I posted Dean06 you'll see I'm not judging Sharp. I'm merely stating what is posted on the BBC site and pointing out that Adkins did not bring him in as a like-for-like replacement for Tadanari Lee, instead preferring Guly. Those are not judgements or opinions, but statements of fact. If what you saw of him today is supported by others, or by the video when its up on the OS, I'll be more than pleased.

I ****ing love this club. This for me is our MK Dons result.

Exactly what I was thinking. Made my little one laugh and cry at the same time when the second pen went in!

We were due a little bit of luck. Amazing result.

WH fans are getting weird, is it the pressure?

They think we're playing badly so won't go up. But we're playing badly....and winning? So when we play well??? That's not considering the Derby, Burnley and Watford recent games where we were excellent. Or the fact we've been top 2 ALL SEASON because we've more often than not been excellent!

You have a top striker and fans always do this 'INSERT STRIKER NAME FC' business. I don't mind banter, I just find the predictability and lack of originality a bit depressing. Reading fans do it too. It just shows they haven't watched saints much. Our most valuable player is clearly Lallana, but loads of players have been vital this season. Kelvin, Fox, Fraser, Jos, Morgan have all been brilliant IMO. You don't stay top 2 all season because of 1 player.

Besides, how is 'Lambert FC' supposed to wind us up? Does 'Messi FC' wind up Barca, or Rooney FC wind up Utd? Every team has a best striker. Except WH. If they had better than the 20 or 30 average strikers Big Sam had brought in in desperation, perhaps they'd be top.

How is lallana more valuable to us than lambert please explain?

Back from the game.

First 20 mins it looked like we'd stroll it. Millwall were terrible and we were coasting at 1-0. Out of nowhere we,re 2-1 down. Two poor pieces of defending. After that we were terrible, all the way through to the 80th minute. Biggest culprits were Chaplow and Hammond, both completely off the pace and scared to show for the ball. However the whole team looked void of ideas, aimless long balls to Ricky that didn't stick.

SDR showed flashes and Sharp worked hard in the second half. Then, when all hope was lost, two pens (both soft) changed everything. So satisfying to rub it in to the Millwall fans, they really are pondlife.

An absolute robbery of a result, but it couldn't have happened to a more deserving set of fans in Millwall.

I said he's more valuable. He'd fetch more in the transfer market. He's much younger, is technically fantastic and seems to get better each year. Lambert is a brilliant striker, but he's 30 now. In terms of value to the team, I'd put them both on a similar level. Both have had great seasons.

If lambert gets injured we will miss him more imo. His touch is pretty much as good as lallanas

What's the reason for this cheats thing? Must be something specific. Are there any penalties in particular they are annoyed about? I seem to recall Fonte getting a ridiculous one, but that was just a foul outside the box. It wasn't a dive, no-one asked for a penalty, so how is that cheating? Some penalties are softer than others but the vast majority of ours have looked reasonable. We've had a lot of good shouts for pens we weren't given too.

Seems an odd criticism from a team that's had a hell of a lot of pens themselves this season.

We must have been cheating to have amassed more points than them and to have scored more goals than them despite the gazillions they have spent and the 15 strikers they have in the squad.

Back from the game

Thought we were v.controlled for the first 20-25mins with Lallana and Lambert linking up nicely and deservedly took the lead (though I initially thought SRL had skied his shot).

At times, we were a tad aggressive and played into Millwall's hands by giving then chances to hit us on the counter - as their away form shows, they're a decent counter-attacking side with good pace/width via Henry/Bouazza.

After they went to 2-1 up - shocking marking for the 2nd, we lost our shape. Chappers sub couldn't come soon enough. SDR looked bright when he came on and had a shot cleared off the line; though he didn;t see much of the ball after that. Millwall looked more likely to score than us. Thought the Hammond sub which saw Guly drop into the centre of midfield set us back. But the rest is history....

We missed Lee - we tried to reproduce the tactics at Watford where Fox/Richardson hit a lot of percentage balls behind the fullbacks to stop them from squeezing up. Until SDR's introduction, we didn't have the pace to pull it off.

That said, Guly showed good strength and had a solid performance up top. Other decent performances were Fox and Lambert. Lallana was excellent in the first half; but went missing in the second. Both Jos and Richardson looked ragged at the back. Would welcome a bit more cover at CB - Jos and Jose will be cream-crackered come the final strait in April.

Sounded like a very difficult game today, just great that this team seem able to conjure up a result, from the depths of what looked like a certain defeat.

They never know when they are beaten. As for the penalty's they were both clear cut. I can't see why they are complaining about them. I can understand that they

would be upset to lose when they'd played so well. And as for West Ham fans, they've been deluded & crying since the Sharpe incident! Complete fools.

Now is not the time for pretty football, we have 9-cup finals left & winning or not losing is now everything!

I'm sure you're building a case against Billy, Professor, but to be fair if we relied on the words of the commentator to keep us in touch with what's n't have to drivel on about whats happening in any game we'd surely get a totally different report from others watching it.

If Billy did nothing right, then OK but I'd never rely on what reporters say about a game ...BTW another comment here said that Billy was involved in both penalty incidents ..was he ?

How many pens do Saints get - Refs handing them promotion

Apparently ref was poor at the Den - Soton's 12th man

Paul Merson on SSN said both were clear penalties, but it won't stop Big Sam complaining tomorrow.

Funny game today, after we scored our first I thought we were going to go and coast a 2 or 3-0 win. We were well on top, passing it around well and they hadn't had a sniff.

Suddenly after switching off twice we went into half time 2-1 down.

Second half, I always thought we were well in with a shout of getting one and we definately dominated. Even though it wasnt exactly flowing spectacularly, a few too many long balls.

First penalty was stonewall, second was stonewall. Although admittadly I didn't see it at the time. Actually, I was baffled at the time!

Ratings:

Davis - 6 - Didn't have too much to do, 2 shots 2 goals, and a decent save from Bouzza too.

Richardson - 6 - Didn't really get forward too much but defended well.

Jos - 7 - Strong as ever.

Fonte - 7 - Made Henderson very quite.

Fox - 6 - Sometime goes too longball for me.

Chaplow - 5 - Not his day.

Spiderman - 7 - Always tried to get the ball down and play, getting better and better.

Hammond - 6 - I actually thought he was OK, picked up on the loose balls well and it was noticable the loose balls wernt picked up on as much after he went off.

Lallana - 6 - Great first half, quiet second.

Guly - 7 - Upfront he was very good. Ran his socks off and made something of Lamberts flick ons. He wasn't great when in midfield though. Good performance though.

Lambert - 8 - Took his penalties with ease, never in doubt. Won his headers, good flick ons, almost a wondergoal. Love him.

Subs:

De Ridder - 7 - Made an impact as he always does, started brightly but tailed off a bit as didnt get the ball too much out wide, but still a threat.

Sharp - 7 - Looked lively, his run and pass got the penalty.

All in all, fantastic win and a great day out. Celebrations were mental, incredible turnaround that late and shows the character we have. Absoloutely beaming right now.

Played very poorly I thought. A number of players had off days, Fox in particular was atrocious.

BUT. We somehow won and went ballistic as a result.

Two noticeably poor away performances on the bounce and 6 points. Something that has promotion written all over it.
