EHIC renewal

Just went to renew mine and filled in the online form and then on the next page it said it'd cost 14.99 -I thought it was free! So did another google and on another site it was 11.99. WTF!

"You can apply for the card free of charge on the official EHIC website (www.ehic.org.uk). Other unofficial websites may charge you if you apply through them."

Cheers. I thought it was free so when a processing fee was asked for it rang alarm bells. The scamming b/stards. I bet they get no end of unsuspecting people paying the fee because the websites look like genuine NHS sites.

Example of the scamming sites:

http://nhsehic.org.uk/

http://www.renewehic.org/index.htm

To be fair to those sites, they do say on their home page that you can apply for free at the official site. You just have to be beyond hopelessly gullible I suppose.

The usual snide drivel from the mental case. A lot of people wouldn't read past the ehic renewal link google provided and they'd then hit apply. When you have a site called nhsehic.org.uk it looks at face value like a genuine NHS site. Luckily i'd had an EHIC before and thought it was free then, but a new applicant could easily be caught out which is clearly what these scam sites are designed to achieve.

Well, Mr Dune, I would like to buy you a drink! Saw this thread title and thought "you don't need to renew them ... do you?" I thought they were lifelong cards, but I see mine ran out in Jul-2011! As we're on hols in 3 weeks, I'm grateful to you for posting this. I have just applied to renew my cards on the free kosher website.

Thank you, Sir Dune.

Don't forget your hire car excess insurance if you are hiring a car. Booking directly through Avis is much cheaper where i'm going BUT you're then walloped with exhorbitant excess cover once there (for peace of mind). This is a highly rated firm to use http://www.insurance4carhire.com/index.asp?subrefID=&curID=1&langID=1&refID=100 (by which?) and if you ring them up quoting one of the rivals (do a google) offering cheaper rates i.e 39.99 they'll offer 12 months for 37.99. Saving you about 100 quid on what you'd pay with the hire car firm.

You misunderstand - I was being generous, Tristram. I think it's laudable that you wish to warn those dumber than you to avoid the charge. It just seems to be a rather small constituency.

In any case, EHIC is a bit of a waste of space - and sometimes much worse. The best travel insurance I've ever had - speaking as someone who's put this severely to the test with bad accidents abroad - is Amex.

Maybe you should take your therapist with you next time you're filming.

It should be free and you can apply at a Post Office. Are you applying for a replacement for one that you lost?

Oh no you can't, and you haven't been able to for a good couple of years. Online or by phone only, and only use the official Government website - they are free, always have been, and unless there's a massive change in legislation, always will be.

As for the latter discussion regarding recommended travel insurance, that the Post Office can do. They've won best insurance provider for 6 years on the bounce now, and is the only provider to pay a valid claim within five days. Had to claim on my annual policy last year, and it was the most straightforward, hassle free insurance claim I have ever had to make.
