TopGun Posted 6 November, 2008 Posted 6 November, 2008 A friend of mine went to some Sky Sports roadshow/sportsman's dinner last week and the hosts were MLT, Paul Merson and Chris Kamara (Stelling was on hols apparently). Someone asked MLT what was his highest basic wage at Saints and he said £4,000 per week. Seemingly Merson didn't know that at all and fell about laughing as he said he was being paid £35,000 per week at the same time by Villa. I'd guess MLT earns more nowadays in retirement as I've been told he gets £7,000 for each Saturday show and £2,000 for extra events like the roadshow evenings. Plus his extras from Flybe etc. Bit galling to think that a player like the forever injured Jason Euell is on three times MLT's wage 10 or so years on when we are in the CCC these days.

Mind you, 8K a week is very good too, to the average person. The best I've ever earned in 7 days was £7,250 before tax in 1990. That was a very nice job that lasted a couple of years.

lordswoodsaints Posted 6 November, 2008 Posted 6 November, 2008 i know for sure he earned more than £4k. he also had a clause in his renegotiated contract that allowed him to earn as much as the highest paid player at the club and i think that at the time beattie was earning £16k so he must of at least matched that.

Saying that, for what he did for the club, and the fans, and the City of Southampton, he should of received 90% of the wages pot anyhow and the rest should of been thankful he wore the red and white of the once mighty Saints and kept them in all in designer Ray Ban sunglasses down at Los Marinos.

He could well have been but the basic salary could still have been lower, but with all sorts of increments (games started, goals, wins, league position, image rights, signing on fees, loyalty bonuses, shares....) it would be fairly easy to structure a deal which kept a headline salary low. This could be particularly worthwhile for a Channel Islander

MLT's last year was awful though. £1k pw basic. Am pretty sure was same again for squad selection and same again for an appearance. Although the guys from that era were paid poor basics they were paid high "appearance bonuses". It worked by getting a big lump sum for appearing in X number of games or matchday squads. Some clauses provided that "absence from games through injury suffered in a game or training after being selected for a squad" amounted to an appearance in all susequent games missed. Example, picked in squad then injured in training. Then miss 20 games but chalk up 20 "appearances". If you think about it many players would have been (and may still be ?) picking up bonuses without kicking a ball.

He said that win bonuses doubled after each win on the bounce eg 500- 1000- 2000- 4000 etc, also that the players were paid bonuses for turning up for training on time.

He is a Lallana fan, but knew nothing about Schneiderlin as he doesn't cover Championship this season.

I didn't mean it as a promo, but merely to illustrate that although I earned a half-decent salary, and an excellent one with bonuses, it was never the same as a professional footballer. And as someone has pointed out.. they don't have their arms and legs chopped off when they retire from football, so it's the same for all. To say that footballers today are paid obscene money would be a gross understatement.
