Markus Liebherr Statue

I'm not sure anything has been confirmed, but I seem to remember a poster from one of the Cortese dinners, posting that honouring him through the training ground (Renaming I assume) was the most favored way of remembering him.

(That could have cause been complete bollyacks - I would happily rename the stadium after him or indeed a statue)

A statue is a great idea, but imho a few seasons need to elapse first. We assume that the Liebherr ladies will continue to fund Saints for the forseable future, but we can't be certain that they won't opt for a profitable sale if we are promoted. Obviously we all hope not, but it would be strange to see a statue next to Ted's, who was Mr Southampton for decades, if the Liebherr's no longer own Saints.

If and when Nicola expands Saint Mary's let's rename the new refurbished stand after Marcus in the meantime.

Have to agree, training ground should be where he's honoured. I am grateful to him for saving us, without him we would not be where we are now and hopefully he fell in love with the club but he had only been involved with us for a couple of years. He definitley should be honoured in some way though.

Ted Bates on the other hand dedicated his whole life to the club, he was Soutrhampton Football Club, without him where would be, this is what deserves the ultimate honour of having your statue at the front of the club.

I honestly don't mind what it is, but I want to see us do something. He is quite possibly the most important man in the clubs history - certainly recent history - so he deserves recognition in some form. I think I'd prefer something very public and obvious like a statue, but I'd be happy with anything, it's the sentiment that counts.

Liebherr was an intensely private man (a trait not uncommon amongst Swiss businessmen). He never gave interviews or made public appearances, he never weighed in with his opinion, and when he came to matches he wanted the focus to be on the pitch, not on him. This is probably why the family don't like the flag coming out. It's also the reason why a statue would be an inappropriate gesture. Honouring him in the new training ground is far more fitting.

It genuinely saddens me that he isn't here to see whats happening at the club right now.

Ditto, I often think this when celebrating at St. Mary's! We owe so much to the big man, we certainly wouldn't be where we are now without him!

Maybe have a bronze statue of him sitting in his seat in the Itchen stand with his scarf on and waving to the Northam. The man was our saviour and will always be, the day he died will always haunt me, more than Lady Di or Frank Drebin.

We paid a huge tribute to the man when he died, had a flag made, he has his own tournament and has his name sung on a regular basis thats more than enough.

He doesnt need a statue in my opinion, it may sound harsh and ungrateful (which isnt intended) but all he did was buy the club with his wealth then sadly passed away. Whereas Ted Bates gave his life to the club, and deserves every part of his statue.

I totally agree.

Considering how the family are supposedly upset by his image on a flag, I imagine a statue would be much worse.

Wouldn't you be upset if your late father was depicted as Colonel Sanders (as seen on the KFC logo)? If it was done tastefully it might be a different matter.

Just one small thing, and this isn't a dig at anyone...but when we sing the 'one Marcus Liebherr' song, could we really try to slow it down so people can hear the words. It is always pretty emotional, and if we go up, I'm sure it will be bring a tear to the eye at the Coventry game if the whole ground could sing it!
