whelk Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 I am buying 4 train tickets for Millwall game but cant seem to get any discount online. anyone got advice for best way to get cheapest rail tickets? used to get 4 tickets for around £20 each with the group save thing. Have prices hiked massively in recent months or is it user error?
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 Yep was going down later this week to buy 4 from Parkway so'd be interested to see how cheap they are - as far as i am aware the deal is still there?
Ricky Redstripe Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 The earlier you book, the cheaper they are normally. Try and book single journeys not a return that generally works out cheaper and early morning and late night trains are normally cheaper than mid morning and late afternoon trains. Mister Neil Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 If you book through Southwest Trains website, for some unknown reason it won't give you the Groupsave Four (or Three) discount price every time. You should be able to buy on the day of travel from the ticket office (ask for a Groupsave Four to South Bermondsey). It should also be possible to buy a group save ticket prior to travel just remember to tell the ticket staff what day you are going. I have no idea if there are any other ticket deals for folks from the Southampton area, there certainly isn't from here on the Island. Your fare should be £63.40 for four travelling together (£15.85 each). http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/timesandfares/Southampton/SBM/170312/0945/dep/170312/1730/dep
Castro 1 Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 You have to go to the station and ask for 'group 4' tickets. it works out at half price.
Sour Mash Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 Am I right in thinking that they stop doing them sometimes when Saints have a big away game?

This Charming Man Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 Am I right in thinking that they stop doing them sometimes when Saints have a big away game? Don't think it applies to London, in the past they've stopped it for Cardiff, Plymouth and Bristol games but still ways around it.
RedWillie Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 I find it's always cheaper to buy via Trainline.com than through Southwest trains for some reason.
Evil Monkey Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 Tickets to London are never any cheaper when bought in advance (in my experience). Just ask for a group save 4 on the day.

No need to use the Trainline, they charge a booking fee when every other website offers the same prices with no booking fee. Virgin and East Coast are normally the cheapest websites. COMEONYOUREDS Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 I find it's always cheaper to buy via Trainline.com than through Southwest trains for some reason. except then you get charged a booking fee. i always book my tickets through southern. no booking fee, free delivery and the groupsave discount should be on there. Even though I hardly ever use southern trains. They quite often have discounts for booking online as well
Ekelund24 Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 Don't think it applies to London, in the past they've stopped it for Cardiff, Plymouth and Bristol games but still ways around it. I think the Groupsaver is only available for travel on the individual networks, that is why it should be OK for London. Also, you can't use it on Virgin Cross Country trains, so you have to go on the old bone rattler trains!!!
Jack Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 Groupsave for London is the same price on the day as it is in advance. Just turn up and pay on the day (but leave enough time to queue for the ticket office). Also, ask for a railcard when you're sorting your tickets, if you're planning on moving around London on the tube. Worked out at about £78 from Swanwick to South Bermondsey with railcards when we went for the cup game. And yea, Great Western cancel the groupsave offer whenever there's a sporting event on that might involve fans using their service. Cvnts

dune Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 (edited) Here is another option, 12 quid travel pass for the southern network (or 24 group pass), however as far as I can see you'd need to buy a return to Portsmouth (10 quid) and then go from there as soton direct to London isn't on the southern network. A lot of p/ssing about, and undoubtedly longer, but an option to save a few quid - 22 quid each or 52 quid for 4 people = 13 quid each on the group save. http://www.southernrailwaytickets.com/daysave.php http://www.southernrailway.com/networkmap Edit: No you wouldn't need to buy an extra return to Pompey as it's part of the network so it's 12 quid each or 6 quid each as part of a group saver. Lord Duckhunter Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 Dont use The Trainline, Southwest train fares to London are the same, but Trainline charge £1 booking fee and £3.50 to pay by credit card. I booked group 4 discount online for Watford and have just done the same for Millwall, but from Poole. The discount didn't show at the summary so I pressed back, it then gave me the option to add the group 4 discount. The funny thing is I tried it for Southampton to Waterloo and it didn't work. Seems like there could be something in them trying to rip off football supporters, I cant think of any other reason it would work from Poole and not Southampton. COMEONYOUREDS Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 (edited) I posted this a few weeks back You can buy a return from Soton Central - Brighton for £25.00 without a railcard which is valid to all intermediate stations... i.e. clapham junction Soton Central - Clapham J return will cost you £31.70, whereas a return to waterloo will cost you £34.20. If you include underground a day travelcard will cost you £39.00 So the cheapest way to do it is buy the brighton ticket, get to clapham junction and then use oyster to get to south bermondsey - £1.60 each way. Obviously if you are in a group then groupsave is probably your best option, but you could also use it with these tickets Groupsave SHOULD be available on all trains in the Network Railcard area http://www.railcard.co.uk/clientfiles/File/map.pdf, if they are not selling them from soton, blatantly to rip off football fans, they are being very naughty and it should be reported So you should be able to get 4x groupsave returns for £50 Amazing what 3 years working in London and being ripped off can do to your knowledge of the railway system! I should add that you must choose the rather confusingly named 'NOT VIA LONDON' ticket rather than 'VIA BARNHAM', its the more expensive of the two but is definitely valid to clapham junction. The only catch of course is the train must stop at clapham junction I buy this ticket for every game and I'm a STH holder living in London Edited 13 March, 2012 by COMEONYOUREDS

I made out that my mates had got group 4 savings from Poole, but another 4 of us wanted to get on the same train at Southampton and it wouldn't allow discount online. They said it must be a glitch and that group 4 would be available at the station. I think they are bending the rules hoping that people will book online at the higher price. What's the betting the "glitch "only occours when Saints are in London?

Think you are bang on the money there, you could try from brockenhurst or something? that would be valid and I imagine the price is the same. They are just taking advantage of the confusing ticketing arrangements, and the fact that customers don't know what they should be booking. I imagine the amount of refunds they give out to people is outweighed by the amount of people they rip off. It may be worth not complaining yet, but get a pattern of screenshots of certain days they are/aren't available from the website, if you can be bothered. If you can prove this is happening regularly they will have some explaining to do

The boy done well Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 Booked on phone with SW Trains late on on Monday afternoon from Parkway. Tickets came this morning which is pretty good. Tried Groupsave 4 which came out at around £80 for the 4 of us with a travelcard. As 2 of the 4 are kids, it was much cheaper to use our railcards coming out at £66.30. The adult tickets are £25.75 each so it would have been cheaper to do Groupsave with 4 adults. With SW Trains incidentally, I'm not convinced that booking online makes any difference. It may do with Cross Country Rail where I seem to remember that you have to book specific trains if you do it online. I'm not sure what happens if you get on an earlier or later train. dannysfc Posted 13 March, 2012 Share Posted 13 March, 2012 And it also depends on whether you've got a railcard like me as I pay £20 for a return to either Parkway or Central and then whatever for the Tube like I do which I dm doing!
boxosponge Posted 14 March, 2012 Share Posted 14 March, 2012 Just booked online ticket via National Rail site. One adult with railcard Specific journey booked will leave Central at 11:13 arriving Clapham Junction at 13:37. Could possibly return from Clapham Junction leaving 18:38 and arriving back at Central 21:05 or maybe will have a couple in the Hole In The Wall and return with leaving times of either 19.38 or 20:38 on the same ticket(s) Only £10.55 for Off Peak Return ticket but it is ONLY VALID for those specific trains. Otherwise the cost without a railcard would have been £16.00. And as COMEONYOUREDS says, I will use my oyster to get from Clapham Junction to South Bermondsey - £1.60 each way.
