Tadanari Lee

Saint-Armstrong

Is it just me who was really impressed today?

Today was the first time I've watched him for myself rather than on TV, and I kept an eye on him all game.

He is an exciting player, and his movement is absolutely top notch. He hardly ever stands still, he's always moving and making runs to make space for others all to make space for himself.

I think he is struggling and getting caught offside as sometimes we are not on his wavelength, or a bit slow to get onto it? Sometimes he wants the ball and we play the pass a little late and he's offside.

His run and assist for Lallana's 2nd was absolutely brilliant, he's a real team player with great work-ethic.

Long may he continue to grow at Saints and push on to become a vital part of Southampton Football Club going forward.

Absolutely 100% with you there. Made some brilliant runs, but rarely got picked out.

Also thought he was top notch for the second goal. Would have been easy to get to the byline and drill one along the ground aimlessly, but picked his moment and spot and it was a great second goal.

His fan club will feature on The Football League Show and/or the highlights on the BBC website. Spotted them drawing their signs up before the game, got them on camera and then found them again in the stadium! Thought they were brilliant, even stayed behind at full time to keep the remaining fans singing Tadanari's name.

Thought he was less effective today -both him and Lambert got quite isolated. And not sure if his runs were genuinely on in the sense that anyone could have picked them out.

He also made the wrong decision at times -was in a good position to shoot on several occasions in the 1st half but ended up passing the ball and the play fizzled out- maybe its the fear of making a mistake. Still he defends from the front, stretches teams and alone made the crucial second goal.

Wonderful touch to shake hands with Adkins and then turn to the crowd and bow (Japanese style).

Met the Japanese fans in the Alfred................ Cortese might just have done something amazing with this signing

I hope they were suitably impressed, with the surroundings (not with yourself!)

Can't say Lee's movement has impressed me that much so far - it's great that he IS moving and making runs, but all of his runs are very straight and not difficult for defenders to read - plus he goes so early our midfield isn't ready to pass to him and it's not really our style at the moment. I actually prefer Sharp's movement and runs as they're more in keeping with our system and he tends to run across the line without going into offside positions all the time.

That said, I love his energy and closing down and he gives us a bit of Ormerod-style pressure on defenders which is certainly worth something at this level.

This lot seemed to be enjoying it.

I have been assured by Dune and his mates that there would be no worthwhile knock on benefits from his signing.

Masterful signing by Cortese. Signed on a free and that's at least £120 worth of shirt sales right there.

Hi The9 - could I possibly include your Chung fans photo on this new Facebook page I'm making for Japanese fans? http://www.facebook.com/SaintsInJapan ?

(Not sure how much they need it, or how they'll find out about it, but I'd like to tell them about Saints sites and news in the UK)

Is Chung the Japanese player playing at the highest level in the UK at this moment? If we get in the Prem next year with him, we could really move some shirts. Hope he gets another goal soon. Although in Japanese teamwork culture, an assist is probably rated more highly than a selfish shoot, goals do look better on prime-time TV news...

With £15k a week wages I think we might need to sell a few more to break even.

I'm a big fan, but it was his worst game to date IMO despite the excellent play for the second goal.

Not just you at all Saint Armstrong. Tadanari is keeping a £1.8m signing out of the team because he's too good to drop and as a full international its not surprising that he's Prem quality. Some of our players, good as they are at this level, haven't adapted yet to the speed and movement of the level above that Lee is showing. The second goal yesterday was an amazing solo effort. Just because it was Lallana who tapped it in from about 10 yards out - and all credit to Adam for taking it so calmly - but it was in reality a solo goal by Tadanari Lee. I feel sorry for Billy Sharp because he's come here with a great reputation but that won't be enough to displace a truly top class player. Still not quite sure why we signed Sharp unless it was that the club didn't realise just how good a player Lee was.

We will need four quality strikers through the course of next season. I do think we bought Lee with an eye to next season, expecting it to take time for him to settle - its taken no time at all. Expect he will get a dip at some point though.

Looks a really decent signing. Exciting to watch, the run for the 2nd goal was great, the most impressive bit was his calmness to wait for AL's run and then pick a peach of a pass for a tap in. Settled in exceptionally well and will only get better as his understanding with his team mates improve. He is a lot stronger than his size and frame makes you think he would be and I've been surprised at how well he can fend defenders off at times. Also not bad in the air either. Amazing to think Sharp can't get much of a run because of him. Doubt anyone thought that would happen when we signed Sharp. Only mild criticism from yesterday was being caught offside a fair bit but that's about it.

As per Adkins post-match interview, he's being asked to play on the shoulder, to create space. goes with the territory a little I think.

Agreed. If the OP was impressed seeing him live yesterday its a pity he wasn't there for the Ipswich game where he really was excellent.

Looks a better bet than Sharp at present but in the long run that may change.

Miyaichi Ryo san is currently playing in the Premiership.

On Arsenal's books but since the end of January playing regularly on loan at Bolton .

Outside of the UK there's also a Japanese defender who is playing regularly for Inter Milan so he's bound to attract a lot of Japanese interest. One or two in the Bundesliga as well.

As for Lee I've been very impressed with him so far

Makes sense, it happened so often it I thought had to be a tactical ploy that wasn't quite coming off. Offers us something different and a tactic i'm not sure we've really tried this season

No you're not alone in thinking that. The whole ground giving him a standing ovation would indicate how much we've all taken to him and his efforts. Never gives up on anything which is great to see. He has it all to be a real crowd favourite for many years to come. I'm already a big fan.

One of the things that really impressed me yesterday is how he plays with his head up, literally two seconds before he made the pass to Lallana for the goal i was commenting on the fact that he wasn't looking at the ball & instead looking to see who was in space in the box.

That to me is a real sign of a good player since he even does it moving at speed, a ****ing difficult thing to do.

I think his runs can be a bit aimless at times and he gets a lot of credit just for effort.

That said, he really does panic defenders and drags them all over the place giving Lambert more room.

The runs are only aimless cos nobody picks him out. If you watch him carefully his movement and runs are very clever. Like a younger and fitter Connolly who for me has the best footballing brain in the whole squad.

So far he's been better for the Football League than Saints, I heard some Japanese channel has just forked out half a million quid in tv rights purely based on him playing for us.

Some of the runs that are being criticised for being aimless may have a different purpose, to create space for other players. He starts a run next to the central defender and then moves towards the full back, if the CB goes with him, there's a big gap, if the full back moves infield to mark him there's space on the wing, sometimes both defenders go, sometimes neither.

The uncertainty he creates in the defence has really unnerved some teams.

The only criticism is that he maybe isn't quite strong enough to hold off defenders. Referees are more lenient in the Championship than I think he is used to. When we play very physical teams, like Wet Spam, he would be ineffective. You wouldn't want him to bulk up to the extent that it compromised his speed though.

I really don't think it's a case of keeping out of the team. It's obvious that NA likes horses for courses and the type of opposition often decides who he will choose. NA must have felt good yesterday, if only because he could take off his first-choice strikers on a hot day and replace them with more talent.

Sooner (hopefully) than later Billy and Lee will start scoring more regularly, but it takes time for new players to settle in - especailly when you see how well the rest of the lads are playing. As soon as Lee (and Billy) gets it together and the rest of the team recognise their talent it'll be a case of .....

"you 'aint seen nothing yet !"

Those Japanese lot that came along are embarrassing. What's the point?

Japanese football has come along way in the last 10 years. At one time, they were the Kamakazi-style San Marino of the Far East.

They've improved a lot. Everyone in the world realises that the English Premiership (and even The Championship) provides good football, and so the japanses are bound to be proud of every one of their countryman who gets to a high level.

I watched an extended version of The Asian Cup final (where Lee scored his fantastic match-winner), and they were not going to lie down and let the Aussies walk all over them, there was a lot of skill there.

If the Japanese fans looked a bit " over-the-top ", it's because they haven't yet learned something from English fans ..namely..how to be cynical about the game.

They clearly have no interest in Saints and are going to a game purely to watch someone because he's of the same nationality, bit strange. Looks embarrassing on FLS with 3 random asian blokes holding stupid signs up as if it was big brother eviction night or x-factor.

Yea I'm sure everyone watching the football league show saw that and now we are laughing stock of the football world. How dare they enjoy themselves and have a good time.

i think hes premier league quality a master stroke signing

Steady !

Like many others on here I think he's done pretty well so far, but strikers are all about goals ultimately and he'll have to start knocking them in regularly in this division before we start dreaming of what he may do in the next.

His attitude and technique seem spot on as far as I can tell, but in the physical English game he may need to learn how to barge his way into prime shooting positions before we see the best of him. With acknowledged experts in that 'black art' such as Sir Ricky Lambert and Billy Sharp around him, he may well be in just the right place to learn.
