Over the last 10 years the 2nd position in this league has been achieved with a tally between 92 (max) and 79 (min)

How much will it be this year?

My bet is 85 to 86 should do it!

I did a little bit of maths a while back on a thread to work out where we were headed for this season(yer, I'm cool like that), and I believe if I recall correctly I came out with 84ish points! Though that was a month or two back and circumstances have obviously changed.

The thing to remember is how many times the five main contenders have to play each other. Realisticallt its now between us WHU, Reading, Boro. Key games:

Brum v Boro

WHU v Boro

Boro v Saints

WHU v Reading

WHU v Brum

Saints v Reading

Brum v Reading

We only appear twice. Clearly points will be taken from each other, but Reading have three tough away games there. We need to avoid defeat against Boro and Reading, and win the winnable ones.

PS ... Feck 2nd place .... Being Champions is where its at ... so ... 1 point above 2nd place ... or in presnet circumstances ... our GD wold suffice same points as, but not sure my heart could take it, so at laest 4 points clear by the last game would be nice!!

no way will 85 be enough with readings amazing run 89 guarantees automatic promotion as champions or 2nd i do not know! but forget 85 thats silly

Have a look at Readings run-in.

IMO they've timed their run poorly.

Best to review it on Tuesday night, both WHU and Reading have tough away trips to contend with, once the games in hand have gone see where were at, our GD at the moment is like having another point or two in the bag!

I think its highly unlikely that us, West Ham and Reading will all get over 85. Their run ins are very tough. We got ours out the way.

Well, not silly at all. 85 points has been enough most seasons in the last decade or so. Reading have won eight in a row and still trail behind us, even if they win their game in hand. And if Reading do end up winning every single game they ever play ever again, which some on here have worked themselves up into a frenzy thinking they will, there is still another place to play for. And 85 or so is probably going to be enough for that.

Thanks for your elegantly put contribution but the thread was about the points tally to get into the top two and not actually who is there!

Fair dos. Eloquence tends to go out the window after a few beers. My (poorly put) point was that we're not aiming for the first losers spot. Positive thinking people. Top spot is ours!

Current maximum points for 36 matches:

69 Saints

69 West Ham

69 Reading

65 Middlesbrough

62 Birmingham

60 Cardiff

60 Hull

Assuming West Ham and Reading both get three points when they play each other. Unlikely to be fair. That is just one example of course as the top teams will play each other a lot in the next couple of months.

Aside from that I'd just like to say with my third and final post of the day that that game today was painfully dull...

6 more wins (87 total) should definitely do it. Win all at home + Palace\Millwall (a) and we're there.

Just need to keep on doing what we've already been doing all season.

With Reading going to WHU before they play us I'm thinking 6 more wins, including Reading, and we'll be up.

If we beat Reading then yes we will come in top 2 but only if WH beat Reading also there is still more twists and turns in this yet i can see us dropping points against Millwall.

10 games - so being slightly conservative 5 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats gives us 18 and a total of 87 points.

That would mean that West Ham AND Reading would need 22 from 11 games - so either 6 wins, 4 draws and 1 defeat or 7 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats.

At HOME:

West HAM - Boro...Reading....Birmingham...Brighton...Hull..............VERY TOUGH to win all of them if ANY!

Reading - Blackpool...Leeds...Forest...Palace.........certainly easier but not an easy game in there.

AWAY:

West Ham - Leeds...Burnley...P'Boro...Barnsley...Bristol City...Leicester....Again VERY TOUGH!!!!!

Reading - Doncaster...Barnsley...P'Boro...West Ham...Brighton...Saints...Birmingham...........the last 5 are VERY TOUGH!!!

We WILL win this league!!!!

Yes, obviously you'll have to look at the above as independent of each other. It fills a purpose nonetheless :)
