Man u v Bilboa

Walking round Manchester city centre to get my lunch today I thought I was surrounded by a load of Saints fans who'd been on sun beds a lot. Had to go look up on tinterweb who man u were playing in red n white stripes.

Great to see an away team at OT play without fear. Most English teams play there cautiously, intimidated by their reputation. 2nd goal looked marginally off, just means fergie will have a good old whinge.

They looked quality.

Typical spanish team. Quick, nibble, excellent movement and the have the ball strapped to their boots!

I thought they were pretty nifty when we played them in pre-season, but they've gone from strength to strength this year.

And of course you know the story of where Bilbao got their red and white stripes from...? You're not so far from the truth...

There's a reason he's commentating on Channel 5.

Surely John Elorduy was determined to fulfill the request, but the fact is that time it was very fast in the capital London and by the time wanted to buy the blue and white shirts in the store were no longer sufficient. Forced to leave for Southampton to catch the boat that would bring him back to Bilbao, the young Bilbao had to improvise. In the port city bought 50 local team jerseys, wearing red and white. Finally, after all, might think Elorduy, these were the colors of Bilbao.

Was thinking the same myself when watching last night. They're at home on the weekend on 14/15th April...
Also at home 6th of May I think, still not confident enough re. the play offs yet and guessing that might be the last home game at their old ground (not been able to find out anymore info on that after a quick google search). Easyjet fly there and it looks a lively old city, more so than some of the sterile/touristy Spanish cities. Go by ferry ha?

Only problem with Spanish football is the TV companies can change the games around with only a few days notice, even if previously confirmed! Does look a class city though. Vueling also fly there, can get £140 return on the weekend I mentioned. They're at home to Mallorca. Ferry would be quality if we had time on our side!

Anyone on here done a game over in Bilbao? Quite fancy it and fancy getting in before they move to their new ground.

I watched them thrash Valencia about 4 years ago. By far and away the best atmosphere I've experienced at football. The whole stadium was jumping from start to finish, basically an excuse for 40,000 people to go absolutely mental. Its a really cool stadium too, close to the pitch, steep sides with a Wembley style arch. Tip for buying tickets, don't try speaking spanish, nobody in Bilbao speaks normal spanish, just gesture, point and smile.

Something about that club really resonates with the atmosphere we've had as a club for the past few years, fans really getting behind players who play for the shirt, young players, no egos, team ethics...oh and red and white stripes.

There's some dispute over whether it was Saints or Sunderland that were responsible for their colours of Atletico Madrid too, who still wear the blue shorts Saints had at the time. Of course the current Bilbao home shirts are almost identical to the current Saints ones except for having red sleeves where Saints' are white.

FWIW I went to Granada v Villarreal in September, awesome fun, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Cheers. Love doing the odd game abroad, ideally away from the usual football tourist locations. Don't suppose you know if this is their last season in the current ground?

According to Wiki its not ready until 2014 so you'll have the next season or two at least.

This is immense. Not just great defensively (closing united players down, hunting in packs yet still maintaining their shape) but some terrific link up play when they get forward.

They're making united look shiiiiiiiit.

They want it much more. This is why I don't like CL teams entering Europa league. It should be its own tournament of teams happy to be in it. Would be fewer games without the CL teams entering too. Bilbao are 7th in La liga I think, but could definitely be higher without the number of Europa games. Don't get why it's thursday nights either, doesn't help anyone.

TV viewing figures. Nobody will watch Fulham against Metalist Kharkhiv if Arsenal Barcelona was on the other channel.

Agree it should just be original EL teams in there though. Utd and City clearly don't give a sh*t about this competition. I went to a Europa League knock out game at the Etihad last season, the ground was just over half full. I know City were in it from the start then, but they weren't really that bothered about it.

Why are Thursday nights any different to Tuesday nights?
