Afghanistan - What are we doing there?

Fact is, most of the 9/11 terrorists came from Saudi Arabia but of course we can't touch that country because A. They are supposedly allies and B. They have lots and lots of oil.

Countries like Saudi Arabia are a breeding ground for extremists because the absolute monarchy is so backward and governs for itself, not the people. The west is happy to ignore the gross absence of fair government in SA because it is stable and friendly to the west - and by contrast threatens to invade democracies like Iran because is isnt friendly.

Not really. Its just a pretty divided country with the religious nutters lording it over the more secular middle class. Still the majority's choice (for the moment) though.

Is it though? Although western journalists are not allowed in the country, there were still plenty of reports from the time of the last election about corruption and vote-rigging. And the way in which the protests about it were so ruthlessly put down was hardly consistent with the actions of a democratically-elected government.

tbf, I thought it was but have just checked the Economist's democracy index and they have Iran down at 159 out of 202 countries and listed as an 'authoritarian regime'. My mistake (if the economist is accurate). Interestingly Iran stills come in higher than Saudi Arabia (161) but beneath Zimbabwe.... The top four democratic regimes are all Scandinavian. The UK is 18th.

What is not shown are the casualties sustained on OP herrick

UntilI retired a couple of years ago , I was aware of the levels and types of injuries we were sustaining and I suspect since then the levels are even higher. Its only deaths that are announced in the media. there are significantly ore service personnel that are wounded. scaringly so.

After what happened at the weekend, it really is time to come home. The US will never properly punish that soldier, thereby giving the world the instant reminder that the US sees their people as superior to the rest of us (think Gulf War 1 British Warrior friendly-fire deaths and A6 intruders knocking down Italian cable cars of German skiiers), and the whole country is going to ignite like you would not believe.

The British Army is going to be f**king stuck with no large-scale exit route, meaning another bloody Dunkirk with the soldiers running for their lives and leaving all their equipment (billions of pounds of it) behind. No wonder the Government is getting pushy about transit negotiations with the various ex-Soviet republics for the offical pull-out date of 2014.......

Stone age country with stone age mentality. Will we ever learn from history that this country will never change. How about splitting the place in half, brick in one half. You get choose if you want to be like the Taliban and get bricked in never to come out and if you screw up on the nice side then you get to go in the bricked up side a bit like escape from new york. Would keep brickies employed for a while

The rogue afghan also shot six other soldiers . But no information is available how serious there injuries are . On appositive note . If the Taliban are resorting to this sort of tactic. Then we must be on top of them out in the oulu

ah, my mate just facebooked me...the lad he was on about who was shot dead was the one reported yesterday who was an engineer attached to 40 CDO

not seem much about the other 6 bootneck shot in the news at all....

its sad seeing the lads in the wounded warrior unit (Hasler CPY) in HMS Drake...some are a right mess
