alpine_saint Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 OK, so its James Blunt, who is a f**king sh*te singer, but this article is very powerful and made me really angry. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/defence/9126091/James-Blunt-Britains-failure-to-get-troops-into-battle-is-pitiful.html
Viking Warrior Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 As usual alpine you exaggerate the facts and are equally negative . Having travelled on one of those Tristars in the past they are more than serviceable aircraft . The saab 340 up here always develop faults but still fly . I would rather be flown by crab air on a Tristars than a fly be Saab
Viking Warrior Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 Dehydration do you always have to swear in your posts ?. Have you ever served in the forces .

I would rather be flown by crab air on a Tristars than a fly be Saab I havent stated any facts to exaggerate. But yes, my reaction to this article is wholy negative. I dont like hearing about our men flying around in planes being held together by supaglue, tin foil, chewing gum and a ball of string. The MOD has previous for this; the Nimrod that went down over Afghanistan just after refuelling in 2006. Those Tristars are older than me, FFS.
Viking Warrior Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 They maybe older than you but they are more reliable than you will ever be Alpine . Did you ever Serve . If you haven't then you you are not qualified to comment . Crab air who have there faults are the best in maintaining the aircraft they fly .

It's a bit like asking him why as he never goes to Saints games he still feels the need to pontificate on all things Saints from a distance with an air of ignorance and beligerence.
anothersaintinsouthsea Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 errr - isn't there a thread on this already?
Verbal Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 errr - isn't there a thread on this already? Yes, but Alpine's very angry.
dune Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 Yes, but Alpine's very angry. You ought to invite him to one of your group therapy sessions.
dubai_phil Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 Tri-Stars Look on the bright side. They replaced VC-10's
cambsaint Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 I read that this morning and it made me very angry indeed/ Hard to believe that you would fly soldiers into a battle theatre in an outdated plane that isn't even fit for Ryanair cattle class! However as the MoD employ more admirals than we have ships then we can guess where the money goes. An acquaintance is a Squadron leader who is much too expensive to pension off and he seems to have an enviable sinecure as a liason officer with the USAF.
LVSaint Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 Tri-Stars Look on the bright side. They replaced VC-10's Both superb, propper aircraft. We have had an RAF Tristar on the ramp here at the airport for the past two weeks. So glad they have not all been replaced by nasty A330s yet. Couple of RAF Tornados just shot by the office too. Ahhhhh!

I will comment on whatever I choose to, and whether I have served in the forces is neither here nor there. I have also not cast ANY aspersion on the ability or skill of the RAF to maintain its planes, I am referring to the lack of political and financial support the Forces get from the Government. But of course, you totally missed that point in that in your rush to have a sneery dig. But as has been said, at least we moved on from VC10s and Victors, 30-odd years ago.... Pathetic.

alpine_saint Posted 7 March, 2012 Author Posted 7 March, 2012 wrong wrong wrong Yeah, of course it is. That's why the Navy has so small a surface fleet now that Portsmouth is being considered as surplus to requirements. F**k me you are an argumentative tw*t tonight. Now you are even ignoring facts.
Verbal Posted 7 March, 2012 Posted 7 March, 2012 You ought to invite him to one of your group therapy sessions. Only if you invite me to one of your 'marketing' exercises for BAT.
alpine_saint Posted 7 March, 2012 Author Posted 7 March, 2012 errr - isn't there a thread on this already? Yeah, I just noticed. But it was a pretty broad thread title, so I didnt notice it, and although this news item has been cited there as an example of government spending, that thread is a bit more generalised.
Viking Warrior Posted 8 March, 2012 Posted 8 March, 2012 So you didnt do any service then Alpine . so how can you comment on how we treat servicemen It is relevent. Trying sitting in the back of a bedford truck for several hours the you will know what comfort is about The VC10's great to travel on as well
alpine_saint Posted 8 March, 2012 Author Posted 8 March, 2012 So you didnt do any service then Alpine . so how can you comment on how we treat servicemen Erm, I read the article and found it unacceptable, as did the author, who has served ? Your point is totally non-sensical. And I would rather rattle around in the back of a Bedford truck than get on a plane whose undercarriage fails or develops an air leak 6miles up over enemy territory....

Viking (for all his many faults) actually has experience of these planes and other transports - which you choose to dismiss as 'non-sensical' [sic].

Happy days.
Minsk Posted 8 March, 2012 Posted 8 March, 2012 Or a long flight in the arse end of a Herc' with just old battered ear defenders on. Happy days. I spent 15 fekin hours flying from Bermuda to Brise that way. What joy that was!!! Sitting facing the rear of the plane on a Tri-Star was a million times better.
Viking Warrior Posted 8 March, 2012 Posted 8 March, 2012 I went to Belize on a Herc . those bucket seats were so uncomfortable. Also Alpine the Tri Stars were built to last and not for comfort. Bit like the woolston ferry

Redondo Saint Posted 9 March, 2012 Posted 9 March, 2012 All aircraft develop faults. The age of the airframe does not necessarily mean there are more faults. TriStars (Lockheed L1011) are very capable machines and designed to have a very long service life. The MOD and their contractors maintain all aircraft (as does every operator in UK) to very high standards. Planned maintenance includes complete overhaul and sometime replacement of major parts including engines and undercarriage. It might be bumpy, noisey and cramped, but it is as safe to fly as any commercial aircraft.

I would like to know their status in terms of airframe lifetime. Thats not a part that can simply be replaced.
