The yoof should look at that and see what Real Football used to be about - luverly pitch (compared to many) Stadium still looks better than Nottarf Krap I was there - but way up the back But recognised one of the 1.25 crew lol What a mullet

Give it to Ron Posted 7 March, 2012 Share Posted 7 March, 2012 Yep certainly know a few on there - the lad with the black hat was in my class at Redbridge was a well known lad. Certainly felt the weight of his fists a few times at senior school. Also the lad Kev C who sat on the penalty spot was a few years older than me and well know around Millbrook. Terrible game, herded like cattle from the station and back and we were rubbish - Bristol put up a fair fight that day.
Graffito Posted 7 March, 2012 Share Posted 7 March, 2012 I was there but not on the pitch. I recall someone grabbed a corner flag and began swinging it around his head. Also, a bigger pitch invasion which could have been at the end of the rmatch...it was a long time ago.

CLOTH EARS Posted 7 March, 2012 Share Posted 7 March, 2012 This was January 1978 and i was there. I nearly suffocated before the game when we were being hoarded down to the ground by police horses and i had my face forced into the back of a rain jacket that some bloke was wearing we were being crushed as i recall...i was just 11 years old at the time. Other things i can remember from the day was how every Bristol Rovers fan looked like Jeff Lynne from ELO!!! Oh and my ol man and his mates stopped at some pub on the way and they had a TV in the pub and happy days was on with the Fonz....memories memories. chocco boxo Posted 7 March, 2012 Share Posted 7 March, 2012 I was there, work in Bristol now with a few Gas, they have upmost respect for us after that game..(we talk about it now over coffee and digestives). Kind of Red Posted 7 March, 2012 Share Posted 7 March, 2012 What a fun day that was! They all were that season, every away game was the same, Luton, Orient. I bet a lot of people will recognize the pitch invaders, the walk back to station was a laugh, as you can see that was before casuals brought some fashion sense to football, all those sheepskin coats, mind you it was F@cking freezing that day! I have been in the States for the past 26 years, is the Warrens still around? We are all in our 50's!

Under Weststand Posted 8 March, 2012 Share Posted 8 March, 2012 I was there stood near the back just were the the road used to almost overhang the away end, what a god awful match. Seem to remember a copper fell headlong into huge puddle behind the goal on that cinder track, when they started to come on the pitch. Seem to have hazy memories of someone lobing a party seven on as well? For all you youngsers just ask your dads about party sevens.

Sadly Eastville is long gone covered by IKEA, TESCO's and a range of non discript shops. Was 11ish and my overiding memory was also having to get off on the hard shoulder of a motorway (an elevated section???) and getting in after kick off and bascially seeing feck all for the first half. Managed to squeeze down the front at half time. Being honest although we got on the pitch first (the royal we, as I didn't!) I have to say that Rovers well and truly chased us back at the end when they all came on from a half covered end opposite. Took us ages to find our coach and was not the most pleasant of experiences afterwards LOL. That was the promotion season wasn't it??
diggers Posted 8 March, 2012 Share Posted 8 March, 2012 Great day out! Think i was on a bus from the Halfway Inn! Plenty of memorable aways around those times. kpturner Posted 9 March, 2012 Share Posted 9 March, 2012 away games were quite an adventure They were indeed. I went by Princess Summerbee coach from West End to Spurs once (aged about 16). The coach driver let us all off right outside the ground - so there we were 30-35 saints fans walking down White Hart Lane and I was at the front. After about 5 minutes this huge raging Spurs fan, on his own, came charging at us - fists clenched and promising (bellowing) a whole manner of atrocities he was about to inflict on us. I remember thinking "there are 30 or more of us - this bloke is committing suicide". Nevertheless, as a not so brave 16 year old, I didn't want to be the first to engage him - so I quickly made my way to the back of our group and waited for the fun. What I didn't realise was that the people I left at the front of our group seemed to have a similar idea and made their way to the back, and so did the ones they left - and so and so on. Before long - one Spurs fan could be seen chasing an entire coach load of Saints fans down the road. Not our greatest moment - but it must have looked comical to everyone else. The9 Posted 9 March, 2012 Share Posted 9 March, 2012 Good grief, the scene in the background at 2:12 when Bobby Gould goes to take the throw then passes it to Tony Pulis is something to behold. The9 Posted 9 March, 2012 Share Posted 9 March, 2012 Interesting to see the clash of eras, the commentator being an old school broadcaster more concerned that the referee will have to mention it in his report, with a mention of Leeds fans getting their club banned from home FA Cup games due to trying to get matches abandoned, the stewards looking basically just like the pitch invaders but with bibs - and fluorescent ones at that, a novelty for the time - and the general chaos of a rammed lower league crumbling open terrace, when yer yobs wore colours, and a quagmire of a pitch to top it off. Oh, and "young" Tony Pulis with hair.

Professor Posted 9 March, 2012 Share Posted 9 March, 2012 (edited) Wasn't there but its reminder of a lot that was wrong with football in the 1970s when, as fans living through it, we thought the game was great. There were far too many thugs following football, or decent blokes who behaved like thugs on a Saturday. Above Bar Street on the Saturday of a home game could be quite unpleasant. As for the state of the pitch, it was common then for league grounds to have hardly any grass on them by January. I was playing Hampshire League football in the early 70s and there were better pitches at a lot of the local clubs. ericofarabia Posted 11 March, 2012 Share Posted 11 March, 2012 I was there but was not a part of the pitch invasion. I'm pretty sure I'd have been wearing flared jeans and jean jacket (or crombie as it was cold) with a silk scarf around my wrist and a red and white scarf around my neck. Never got a Suede coat, but did often wear my Hippy era Afghan which ensured I got plenty of space to myself if it had been raining. LOL
