Saints vs Barnsley Build Up Thread

trousers

Recommended Posts

Can't believe it's Wednesday afternoon and we don't already have a build up thread....

Anyway, here's my futile attempt to predict the future.....

------------------------ Davis -------------------------

---- Butterfield --- Fonte ---- Hooiveld -------- Fox ----

----- Cork ---- Chaplow ------ Morgan ---- Lallana -----

------------- Sharp --------- Lambert -----------------

Bench: Richardson, Lee, De Ridder, Hammond, Puncheon

Saints 3 Barnsley 0

-------------Super Kelv----------------

-Frazer----Fonte----Hooiveld----Fox-

Chaplow---Cork-----Morgan----Lallana

------------Lee------Lambert-----------

Subs: Martin, Hammond, Guly, SDR, Sharp

Saints 4-0 Barnsley

It all comes together and the wrist-slashers go back into hiding until we drop points again.

I'd go with this team and bench, except for Harding in assuming Fox is injured.

I think people should lay off Harding a bit. It's difficult being a defender, because you have to win every battle. If Lambert gives the ball away or f**ks up a shot, no bother he can just try again next time. If a defender loses his man for a second, or gets turned or leaves a yard too much space then that can be enough to concede a goal and suddenly you're the villain. It can't be easy to play consistently well when you are in and out the team all the time. In any case, I don't actually think he was that bad last night.

Spoke to Fox last night at about 7.00 p.m outside the main entrance, he said he is probably going to be out for about 4 weeks, soi if that is the case it will be Dan Harding for a while at left back.

Saw him racing between the lights in his Range Rover last night. Didn't do that well due to the traffic!

I think Lee has made a big difference to our style. Needs to keep his starting place, also think Chaplow and Cork have to come back into the side. Richardson needs to do better and perhaps controversially, so does Lallana. I'm getting quite tired of him taking too many touches and overplaying it.

The highly rated Luke Shaw anyone?

Does he even get a game with the U21s at the moment ? haven't checked.

Anyway as I said yesterday I think, none of the U21 or Academy groups seem to be training with the first team just now so I guess the burden of taking us to the PL has been adjuged to the first team group alone.

Other promotion candidates' fixtures this weekend:

Coventry vs Brum (12:30 KO)

Brighton vs Pompey

Hull vs Ipswich

Posh vs Blackpool

Reading vs Leicester

West Ham vs Doncaster

Bristol City vs Cardiff (17:30 KO)

Middlesbro vs Leeds (Sunday game)

Another "home banker" for West Ham then..... ;)

Any chance of Fox returning ?

I havent read anywhere what is wrong with him.

Limped off with a groin strain on Saturday. (the game that was shown live on TV, against Leeds)

Someone said they talked to him and he said he could be out for a few weeks

Really can't understand why Sharp doesn't start in most peoples suggested line up, given how many goals he has a reputation for scoring. Lee is going to be great for us but he's not proven. Guess his wonder goal has earnt him a few starts though

Lee has earnt his starting place on merit. Whenever he plays his movement is fantastic, he brings much needed pace and he has shown he can't half finish when he wants to. Sharp's reputation alone wont get him into the side. He needs to prove himself in the chances he gets, same as everyone else. So far I can't see a case for starting him ahead of Lee.

Sharp looked anything but sharp against Ipswich and seems to be carrying far too much timber around his middle. Tadanari on the other hand is showing pace, energy, awareness and threat with each game he plays.

At the moment for me its a no brainer - Lee every time.

Don't disagree with this at all but what a conversation to be able to have eh? And that's without mentioning Connolly...so many goalscoring options.

Eat your heart out Fat Sam...looking forward to this one!

For goodness sake he only played 15 minutes at the end of the game.

-Frazer----Fonte----Hooiveld--Harding

SDR. ---Cork-----Morgan---Lallana

------------Lee------Lambert-----------

Give Chappers a little bit more recuperating time whilst unleashing deridder at home who must now be chomping at the bit.

Nice home game where Barnsley will sit back.

I must be the only one that thinks we should put Bart on the bench, just in case Kelv gets sent off or injured then we will take too much of a gamble with Spider in goal.

We don't need to take this gamble as I feel the team should win this well with 4 good outfield subs to choose from.

I agree, Nige has got away with it so far, but seems unecessarily risky to me. Where were Chappers and Punchers on Tuesday night, when we needed them ?

I disagree. Subs are about optimising the options (gosh, that sounds like an Adkinsism!). A goalkeeper who comes on once every 100 games per team (semi-educated guess) does not optimise the options.

It's a low risk strategy.

IMHO of course.

Anyway whatever the formation and personnel we need to score early, first 20 minutes or so and then again at least before half-time. Some of the lads are looking a bit knackered and what we don't need is another nerve racking last15/20 minutes trying to keep our 3 points. That epic win at Leeds looks to have taken it's toll on a few of the boys.We need a nice easy routine 3 pointer here.

Did not someone post yesterday that according to Fox himself it's looking like about a month's down time?

Of course people do make up crap and post it here as gospel, never understood that really.

I certainly did not make it up - However he did say he had to have further scans so it could change i suppose

Wasn`t there some tools texting in tuesday night...clueless most of them...

So can someone confirm who will be the scapegoat for the Barnsley match

my guess is that it will be either Guly or Harding (subject to selection of course) or Puncheon as the amnesty seems to have worn off in some areas

Bizzarely though it could be Davis as we have some real vocal tools in our stand who give him stick (yep! unreal i know but true)

Hope it is no one as surely we need to support whoever wears the shirt??

Guly is a decent player when on song but when he is not he is awful. He was rubbish the other night and those who think he was ok need to remove their blinkers. If Guly gets stick from the crowd then it is purely down to his rubbish performances and nothing else. Anyone who posts otherwise is just **** stirring. Yes all players have off days but the problem with Guly his off days stick out like sore thumb. Any player that goes from the sublime to garbage all to often tends to get more criticism than those who are sub standard most of the time. Harding is gash most of the time and his positional awareness is a worry although Fox can also be caught out. Fox's set pieces however are a real asset and are worth a place in the team alone. Hammond is another player that majority of the time is poor and he only looks ok when the other midfielders are playing well and carry him. These 3 players are not scapegoats for criticism but they are our most inconsistent players and when their bad they are real bad.

I was referring to Alpines post, nothing to do with Fox ;-)

Lee scored one wonder-goal but has missed at least 3 or 4 simple chances too. I'm not knocking him - I think he could be very good for us, but I certainly think Sharp deserves a run in the team - something we haven't yet given him. don't think he's even played a full 90 yet. obviously, he missed the sitter against WHU, but if he doesn't get on the pitch a bit more quite soon, i think his confidence may start to drain away. He's a proven goalscorer at this level in a poor side: get his confidence up and he'll score a hatful for us.
