If we'd drawn and Leeds and beat Ipswich

Just echoing a point that was made on the radio last night. Can't remember whether it was a commentator that said it or it was a text in or whatever but I totally agree whatever it was.

There was talk on here before the Leeds game that a draw up there would have been a great result. So had we drawn 1-1 up there and got the 1-0 win at home to Ipswich, it would be being looked at as the perfect week so far. However since the draw has come at home (to the form team who have beaten WHU twice), it's all of a sudden the end of the world. My friend was giving the usual b0llocks last night about how we're not going up now because of these dropped 2 points and I made this point to him. He wasn't having any of it mind.

But anyway, pretty valid point made by whoever made it!

But we didnt.

We did the hard job then fluffed our lines on the (relatively) easy part, as only Saints can.

As a two-game block it looks neutral, but as a single stand-alone game it was a f**k up.

I know the season is 46 games long, but we had a seriously dodgy 15-or-so in the middle that is costing us big time.

Reading messed up at the start, West Ham had a dodgy spell, Birmingham were on fire and but now aren't and this is their second run of below best form, Blackpool were there for a bit and dropped off now, Middlesborough have had a bad spell and dropped out of the play-offs at one point. It happens to ALL teams and usually involves a spell without key players etc. The run we had for a short period of the season was caused by several injuries and suspensions to key players. No team is immune from such issues and neither are we.

Promotion is well and truly in our hands like it was last season and the little bit of dodgy form we had in L1 didn't cost and probably won't this time.

Reading still have a lot of tough away games left to play and also have to play teams in and around the top 6. Those teams playing each other will mean they will inevitably drop points regardless of their form.

If we carry on as we are at 2 points or so a game we will be promoted unless some team has a miraclulous run of form and should that happen then I would wish them well as it will have been a huge effort. Last night was simply down to a bit of poor finishing (which were not usually guilty of at all, especially at home) and a bit of bad luck (their keeper making some decent saves and a deflected equaliser).

Not time to push the panic button yet .....

It's a good point but in a way the fact that we managed to grind out a win at Leeds makes a point at home all the more frustrating. However if we can come out of March having averaged 2 or more points per game for the month, then it will have been a successful seven games. Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture. However, beating Barnsley is really important now imo.

I'm confident about promotion, but it isn't in our hands right now. If we win all the remaining games we'd still need one of Reading or West Ham to slip up at least once to get automatic promotion.

It is in our own hands. If we win all of our remaining games Reading will have slipped up at least once. FFS.

Not so, we can assure our destiny by beating Reading. All other results being equal.

If you'd looked at this run of 4 games against Watford, Leeds, Ipswich, and Barnsley then personally I would have thought 8 points was acceptable, 9 would have been pleasing, 10 guaranteed promotion form, (11 impossible...lol) and 12 Championship form.

At the moment we have 7...so it's either going to be 7 (disappointing), 8, or 10.

Odds are still in our favour :)

Totally wrong. Even if we didnt have still to play Reading and therefore take 3 points off them.

Let's get this straight. If we equal Reading's results and draw with them we will be above them.If we beat them we will probably stay above them. They are 3 points light and have just the one game in hand.Furthermore our GD is vastly superior.

2 things.... Firstly if Reading win 11 and only draw against us then there would have to be a 14 goal swing in goal difference as long as we match their results

Secondly, Reading have to play West Ham, so unless Reading win all of their other games with a 14 goal swing AND West Ham win 12 out of 13, then it is still in our hands :)

Bottom line is if we win every game we are promoted.

However, being realistic, that is not going to happen and there's still the possibility that one of the other teams will burst into a run like we did last season so I think it would be foolish to discount everyone else just yet!

Ipswich at home, given their current form, was never a given result. People who thought that would be a walk in the park are getting a little ahead of themselves.

As i said in the reaction thread. 4 points from Leeds away and Ipswich at home....i'd have taken that.

A chance to make it 12 points from 15 on saturday. That's more than good enough for promotion.

Literally just made this same point to my brother about 5 minutes ago. Its frustrating when we do the hard part then slip up on the easier game, but I would still have taken 4 points from those 2. If we slip up against Pompey, Barnsley, Donny or Cov then I will be annoyed. They are all wins in my eyes.

4 points from 2 games is good, and 3 from Leeds away brilliant. I dont care how the point are collected be that away or home BUT we need about 20 points for top 2. 86 or maybe 82 but given the teams below all have caught up and with games in hand 80 will be min to get 2nd place.

Saints away to come are Millwall, Hull, Blackpool, Palace, Posh, and Boro. So going on the fact Saints wont win all thier remaining home games (just too inconsistant) then I would say we need 3 wins away = Millwall, Palace and Boro.

Is it a choice between getting flogged in the premier (eg Wolves, QPR) or doing fairly well in the Champ next season (farewell Lambert, Lallana, possibly not Sharpe etc)? The Champ is always, always nails at the end of the season, sometimes one team creams it, but I don't think that often. It was the same for L1 - what a run lots of teams put in llast season! Here's to the excitement, but we might as well be 7th as 1st, because everyone's got a shout.
