NickG Posted 5 March, 2012 Share Posted 5 March, 2012 wiki stats has him on 79 goals (in 145 games) for us - don't know if that is up to date? Their list of our top scorers in last 100 years has the following, Steve Moran looks the next target. Can't see him getting much higher with his age and our possible move to premiership. Like MLTs goals before him, his could go down as having a huge place in our history...depnding on the next few weeks! Panda Posted 5 March, 2012 Share Posted 5 March, 2012 What a wonderful forward line that was: Sydenham Mulgrew 100 (330) Reeves 173 (311) O'Brien 180 (281) Paine 187 (815) 640 goals between them plus the few scored by Syd; Syd sure made a lot for the other the others though. Surprised George O'Brien played less games for us that Dereck Reeves. We'll not see the likes again!

Dellman Posted 5 March, 2012 Share Posted 5 March, 2012 Channon played in a great winning team for a lot of his time, MLT in a team facing relegation (and just avoiding it) year after year that's why he has become more of a legend, besides you have to be a certain age to even remember Mike Channon
SNSUN Posted 5 March, 2012 Share Posted 5 March, 2012 Never realised that Channon had played more games and scored more goals than MLT yet the latter is regarded as more of a 'Saints Legend'. If he hadn't been so injury prone in the last few years of his career, he'd have topped that list IMO. Not bad for a 'midfielder'.

Just goes to show, despite some of the stick he got while he was with us, and what some people began to realise the moment he joined Bolton, just how under-rated Kevin Davies was in his time playing for us. ericb Posted 5 March, 2012 Share Posted 5 March, 2012 Never realised that Channon had played more games and scored more goals than MLT yet the latter is regarded as more of a 'Saints Legend'. I think that probably just shows your age mush, i was too young for Channon (just i started mid 80s) but i seriously remember the impact he had on the club and the stories i heard from older saints fans. Matt on the other hand was "my" legend, i saw him from his debut to his testimonial and he was probably the best player i've ever seen in the flesh. So many people remember his goals but they forget little things, like his stunning corners that just landed on dowies head/face and went in. Or watching him turn about five Forest players in one go so nonchalantly it was like he wasn't even trying. Rickie is great, but just not near those lads if you ask me. He's more of a Dodd or Timmy type legend.

I can just about remember a 4-4 draw with Leicester when Big Ron got a hat trick and Chivers got the other one. John Sydenham also in the team I think. Roger Posted 5 March, 2012 Share Posted 5 March, 2012 Only by younger supporters. Mick is much more of a Saints legend in my eyes, always was, always will be. No le tiss was better as his goals were more crucial and unlike cannon he played his whole career in top flight. Also cannon left us and played for Pompey. I love channon but le tiss is the greatest player we have ever had no question. Even channon says it himself.

paulwantsapint Posted 6 March, 2012 Share Posted 6 March, 2012 Rickie has 81 goals to date for us so as to how many he will end up depends on how long he plays for saints It is possible ( with Adkins training/ fitness program ) that he will play well into his mid to late 30s ( giggs, scholes, sherringham, WGS ) with eventually becoming super sub as 25 min battering ram So he should deffinatly be able to make top

Wurzel Posted 6 March, 2012 Share Posted 6 March, 2012 Never realised that Channon had played more games and scored more goals than MLT yet the latter is regarded as more of a 'Saints Legend'. I can see I'm far from the first to say it but not for me either, not by a mile. Guess you have to be old enough to have seen them both. MLT was was blessed with great technical ability. If he could have combined that with Channon's commitment and enthusiasm he could have been a world beater. Channon first for me every time. Avenue Saint Posted 6 March, 2012 Share Posted 6 March, 2012 Le Tissier was a world beater. He destroyed world class international standard defenders week in week out. Absolutely unique footballing one off!!

Lord Duckhunter Posted 6 March, 2012 Share Posted 6 March, 2012 Channon had a pretty decent England career as well, scored 20 odd goals and also captained the side if I remember rightly. Somebody once told me he was the most capped player never to play at a World cup (English player), but I dont know if that's true. Both were legends, Matt on his day was the best, but Mick had more "days", played for England more and was my hero, so slightly edges it in my opinion. If Lambert fires us the the Premier league, he'll be up there slightly below Mick & Matt in my legends list.
