Football Banning Orders

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I stumbled (not being a Guardian reader) across this article.....

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/libertycentral/2010/jun/17/football-hooliganism-laws?fb=native&CMP=FBCNETTXT9038

Seems like a liberal approach is needed to this.

Good article that. Football Banning Orders have been a pretty bad abuse of basic civil/human rights for a fair time now, without receiving any significant scrutiny or questioning.

Banning orders are far too easy to dish out anyway but I didn't realise they have people on watch lists until now though. For example, before games at SMS I drink in Isobar at the top of St Mary street. The police are always outside with their video camera's, so I guess i'm on a watch list as an associate of known trouble makers because I frequent the same bar as them? My brother has been in court before for being drunk at a game, am I on the watchlist as his sibling? Where does this end.....

I'm sometimes in the Isobar...... on match days (I hasten to add). Yes, from this article, if you associate with other "risk" supporters, then you would be on a list. I would have thought that under the data protection act, you can ask what information is held on you. If I am on a list, I want to know about it.

Interesting read. Sort of comfirmed what i thought though, i suspect the police have a lot more information on a lot more people than we think.

And then as the article says, they'll look for an excuse to ban you. How they can dish out 3 year bans (like they do) for people jumping over an advertisment board to celebrate a goal with the players is beyond me.

Many had their details taken?

After all, these 'football intelligance officers' paid nice chunky salaries at the tax payers expense have got to do something to keep themselves busy in between fiming people standing outside a pub.

not forgetting our football banning order specialist who needs lots of paperwork to do during matches and operations.
