Lloyd James

My lad & I went to watch Crawley v Torquay this afternoon and discovered Lloydy was playing right-back for Crawley. (A month's loan apparently.) He did okay - the only player on the pitch able to bring the ball down & pass it, and he put in some decent crosses - but ultimately still too lightweight, not involved enough and not fast enough. We both had a soft spot for him when he was at SMS, but I fear this is his level, and another reminder of how far we have come in the last three years. Still, I wish him all the best.

Incidentally, it was a terrible long-ball game on a badly cut up pitch. These days the gulf between L1 & L2 is miles wider than Championship to L1. (I've also been to Aldershot a couple of times in the last two years - some latent masochism, I think.) Still, West Sussex finally has a Football League club, though my son says he's never going back to watch that cr@p again!

I remember Pardew being really excited about him, saying he was one of the best young passers of the ball he'd worked with. Wasted potential or poor judgement?

Think it was just his total lack of pace that did for him sadly. You could say that right-backs like Jason Dodd weren't that quick, but in terms of positional sense and nous, Dodd was a great right-back.

People forget that James was actually a central midfielder though - it was just our lack of a recognised right-back that saw him stuck there under Poortvliet.

I think James was brought through the youth system as a central midfielder, we only saw him play there once or twice for Saints though. Interesting that he appears to be a fully converted RB now. Always thought he did alright for us, although obviously lacking pace.
