Best save seen by a Saints keeper

4 - Niemi vs Villa at SMS. Gareth Barry free-kick. Edge of D - rolled to him. First time shot - top corner.

AN dived to his right, couldn't get ball with right hand, so used left to put it over bar. Was right behind it in Chapel end.

Superb!

This!

I don't want to detract from his fantastic performance tonight, but the only reason he save from Becchio in the second half was because Becchio made a complete mess of it. His effort wasn't even on target - if it had of been then it would have been unsaveable.

One for the purists - Niemi v Spurs at WHL. We were losing 0-1 (or it might have been 0-2) and a cross came over from the right. It was nodded down by Kanute and Jermain Defoe hit it on the volley from 6 yards out - a move not dissimilar to our goal against Leeds tonight.

Despite it being hit hard and at point blank range, Niemi not only saved it, he held onto it, leaving many in the stadium wondering where the heck the ball had gone. Even the Sours (a typo but too good to correct) fans applauded.

Sadly, AN rolled the ball out to Claus who gave it straight back to Defoe who then scored. We went on to lose 5-1 and the wonder save was never shown on MOTD so only those present at the match witnessed it.

Ok then just for you what about the 1st half save from Becchio

I think the Jones save people are refering to was this one in that 3-3 game at OT

Start watching around 1:15 for the brilliant save (the second of the double) although to be honnest that whole video is worth watching.

Kelvin was immense tonight.

Blaney stopping Shearer was fantastic.

Smudger keeping out the Arsenal with a double save was Brilliant.

But the one that popped into my head on reading the OP was Niemi's debut v Charlton, I had a prawn sandwich seat for that game so a good view. Charlton got a free kick in a dangerous spot, possibly Jenssen (?) who had been on fire from dead ball strikes so far that season lined up and hit a Howitser of a shot going in at the Airmail stamp of the goal, all of a sudden Niemi has switched the jets on in his studs and somehow flown across and pushed it wide............. From that moment I thought he would do alright for us.

Not just for any specific saves but for overall match heroics and keeping us in the game, this has to be one of the all time best goal keeping performances ever - only scores 9.99999 though for the long kick in injury time when we needed to retain possession!! Loved it in the post match interview - Was this his best game ever? ....Played pretty well in training this week

2 other performances for general all round unbeatability and defensive never die attitudes that match todays for me were

Late 60's early 70's at Highbury in the snow and ice. Eric Martin and his defence somehow held onto a 0-0 draw .... I think there was a link on here a few weeks ago. That was a day when each and every player stood up to be counted - no wimping out of challenges because it was cold and the pitch rock hard. Big John Mcgrath probably had his trademark short sleeved shirt on :scared:

1981 1-0 at Anfield in a match quite similar to last nights - one shot from Steve Moran and we win. Ivan Katastrophic and defence under intense pressure in a noisy Anfield ... happy days.

If we are talking Individual saves, then I would have to say Neimi's triple save against Arsenal, just topping Blaney's save from Shearer. And irrespective of whether Becchio's shot was going in or not, Kelvin's save last night a very close third.

EOA has introduced a certain keeper, who will probably not get much of a mention Ivan Katalinic or affectionately known as (Katastrophic). His shot stopping was unbelievable at times, then he would miss a simple cross or punch almost always resulting in a goal.

I think Shilton was the best keeper we ever had, by a long way.

Considering he was probably the best in the world when here and considered one of England's best ever goalkeepers then I think you make a good point sir.

Always a little difficult, these debates about the 'best ever'. It will almost always be the most recent for most people simply because those making the judgement don't remember or didn't even see the earlier candidates for 'best player', best squad', best save' etc. On the GK front, we've had some great keepers in Tim Flowers, Peter Shilton, Paul Jones and Anti Neimi. If Kelvin has joined that group, that is a tremendous achievement and if these 3 points make the difference at the end of the season he'll deserve all this weekend's praise all over again.

It's not any individual save tonight -- it's the combination of all of them that makes it such a brilliant performance

Probably sums it up for me as well.

The Niemi triple is probably the moment that stand out for a Saints GK.

Other outstanding performances by GK in my time supporting Saints are Flowers away v Spurs in the cup 1990 incl a point blank header from a Spurs corner, and Terry Gennoe away at Reading League Cup 1978/9 where he was immense(0-0 draw due to Gennoe). Some years later a couple of Reading fans reminded me of it saying it was the best goalkeeping performnce they had seen at Elm Park.

Game of his life at Anfield c1981 when we won 1-0.

A Niemi save where he has to run back across goal and tip over a curling shot that was going into the top corner sticks in my mind. I think it may have been against Villa, appologies if anyone has already mentioned it.

This one for me too. Absolutely breathtaking.

But Kelvin gave the bestgoalkeeping display today that I can ever remember in over 40 years.

I think that sums it up; for me, the Niemi triple save was the best, but as far as the best 90 minute goalkeeping display goes? it has to go to Kelv.

Neimi v Villa without a doubt although some of the others come close

abouth 3.25 in

Makes you realise just how many points he gaijned us those seasons... looking abck to 2003-2005 fantastic keeper, Davis is superb, but Neimi for me is still one the best keepers ever - totally underated in the global sphere of things

Paul Jones pulled off an absolute worldy (as I believe it's known in the industry!) at the Dell in a Carling Cup 1/4 final. Sadly it was when he was playing for Stockport against Saints. We were losing 2-1 (which is how the game finished) and there was little time left when Matty hit a right howitzer towards the top corner. I was right in line with it and started to celebrate only for Jones to come from nowhere and claw it out of the top corner. The git.

Jones against Dwight Yorke, which unfortunately led to a Utd goal!

Yeah, that one for me too, diving back towards his own goal-line, miraculously clawed it wide, they then square it back in and scored anyway. Was the 3-3 draw.

Yeah, that was the one. Incredible save, mad game all around, my first visit to Old Trafford, weirdly.
