Wurzel Posted 3 March, 2012 Share Posted 3 March, 2012 I've never been a rambler but it's good to get out in the fresh air with Mrs W for a bit of exercise (I AM talking walking) during the spring/summer months. We are lucky enough to have a huge range of places to explore within a short drive from home. But sometimes it just feels like we are walking for the sake of it. Just read about GeoCaching , basically sounds like a kind of treasure hunt using GPS. A quick postcode search on the website shows plenty close to home. Can't make up my mind from reading about it whether it makes a good walk even better by adding a fun element, or whether it would turn it into a frustrating waste of time scrambling about trying to find something when you're not quite sure what you're looking for. Has anyone tried it? Is it worth it? And is a GPS on a mobile accurate enough or does it need specialist equipment?

Can be frustrating at times although the hints help. I'm using my mobile and the misses takes hers to confirm. Even when you get a good signal you're still within a 5 or 10metre tolerance. If things keep going ok I'll invest in a garmin handheld about 250 quid.
alexpro7 Posted 3 March, 2012 Share Posted 3 March, 2012 You can get a Garmin for about £70 on amazon. We have an etrex and it is pretty accurate and works all over the countryside. The kids really enjoy it so it makes a good trip out .
hamster Posted 3 March, 2012 Share Posted 3 March, 2012 Some nicely placed ones along the canals Wurzel, often enroute to a decent, child and dog friendly pub. The few I looked for are pretty rubbish imho as you feel feel a weirdo poking around in city locales.
RedWillie Posted 3 March, 2012 Share Posted 3 March, 2012 Great fun, found places I didn't even know existed on my own doorstep. Kids love it and gets them out in fresh air like this afternoon. 2 in the Forest today.
