for_heaven's_Saint Posted 2 March, 2012 Share Posted 2 March, 2012 Just driven through Bursledon and Hamble road is completely blocked off by police cars. Turns out a young girl aged 4 has been killed in a collision with a motorbike . RIP to her, and thoughts with all her family. I also hope the motorcyclist is ok, as it is surely a tragic accident. 2 families' lives ruined in one split second.

Doctoroncall Posted 2 March, 2012 Share Posted 2 March, 2012 Sad news indeed After my wife dropped the kids off at school this morning, she was walking back home and there were a couple of parents chatting away while their kids ran ahead into a busy car park, presumably to the car. She noticed some lady instruction the kids to stand still next to a car while the parents were still chatting away oblivious to the dangers. She noticed some lady instruction the kids to stand still next to a car while the parents were still chatting away oblivious to the dangers. I see this all the time. I was always ultra paranoid about road safety and danger awareness when my kids were that age. Indeed, I still am to this day. I'm probably over protective of my kids but there are some parents at the other end of the scale. Anyway, I'm not in anyway suggesting this poor little girl's fate is anything to do with the parents, just tapping into your general observation. My heart goes out to the familes involved. The Cat Posted 2 March, 2012 Share Posted 2 March, 2012 http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/9566664.Tributes_paid_to__beautiful_little_girl__killed_in_road_crash/ RIP. Horrible. It gets pretty busy up Hamble Lane around 7pm as it's shift changeover time at Coopervision.
Wurzel Posted 2 March, 2012 Share Posted 2 March, 2012 Got caught in the traffic there myself just before 8pm . Very sad, tragic for the whole family That is a horrible piece of road, a slight dip in the road makes it very difficult judging speed of traffic coming towards you. Having said that, and I'm purely speculating, the number of police vehicles (far more than in the Echo photo when I passed), combined with a relative expressing "anger" amongst the family, would suggest the rider may have been a fault and the area was being treated as a crime scene. Echo report now updated includes Police have today revealed that the motorbike rider was last night arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The 38-year-old Eastleigh man, who was uninjured in the incident, was this morning still in custody being questioned by detectives. Tragic

This is undoubtedly terrible news & at least 2 families have had their lives ruined. Rip

Something that terrifies me is the number of parents who aren't in control of their kids when using the pavement. When my kids were small they were either on reins (to matter how unfashionable it seems to have become), or they were holding my/wifes hand on the INSIDE of the pavement. Also note there will be muppets reporting the motorbike as speeding even if it wasn't. I noted that the crash scene was near but not on a pelican crossing. Chez Posted 2 March, 2012 Share Posted 2 March, 2012 Was the accident opposite the chip shop? looking at the photo on the Echo, where the flowers are is one house up from the chip shop. What a terrible thing to happen. My sister lives the other side of the shop and has a 3 year old girl, needless to say I was deeply concerned when I heard the news on the radio this morning. I didn't realise that about drivers always being charged... for those who are innocent, that must be a massive kick in the nuts. Not that I'm suggesting bikers don't have a reputation for driving quickly... I'm a biker myself, and I'm well aware that some of my colleagues don't do us any favours in the public's perception of us. gingerone Posted 2 March, 2012 Share Posted 2 March, 2012 A car stopped to let people cross the road and as the woman pushed her child in a push chair, a motorbike overtook the car and hit the pushchair. It was dark and sounds like the motorbike rider did not realise why the car had stopped....knowing people at the scene, they said that the motor cyclist was absolutely distraught and has been arrested. Presumably for dangerous driving but sometimes I do wonder why cars stop in mid flow to let people cross the road or let other cars out. Absolutely tragic that a child has been lost when it could so easily have been avoided. RIP and condolences to the family.
L1Minus10 Posted 2 March, 2012 Share Posted 2 March, 2012 Doesn;t sound like the case in Hamble but some parents are such ****s. I nearly hit a 2 or 3 year old in St Johns Road in Hedge End in the summer. Mother chatting away about 100 yards away, kid tries to cross the road on her own. Screeched to a halt and luckily she turned round and went back. Absolutely crapped myself and couldn't sleep for a week afterwards. What I bawled in the face of the mother isn't repeatable on here. Tragic for the Hamble girl and all involved. RIP.
rocknrollman no2 Posted 2 March, 2012 Share Posted 2 March, 2012 So sad for the loss of the little girl and my thoughts are with her family. But im sure the person on the motorbike would have never meant to harm anyone. He must be in a living nightmare now. I used to live about 3 minutes away from that road and know how dangerous it is. I very nearly went up some tits rear the other day when they thought they would just stop and let a pedestrian cross and can understand just how easily something like this can happen. Absolutely tragic for the family though, my thoughts and prayers are with them. I have 2 Girls of my own and couldn't begin to comprehend what they must be going through. Chez Posted 3 March, 2012 Share Posted 3 March, 2012 absolutely tragic, but totally avoidable. For starters the bike shouldn't have overtook (or undertook) without extreme caution and secondly there is a pedestrian crossing 30 yards from the incident

If that is the case - and it is exactly the story I've been hearing locally since I posted earlier - the person who stopped must be having sleepless nights as well. Did they check their mirror before stopping for them to cross? Even if they did they'll be asking themselves whether they checked properly. Not trying to apportion blame, just pointing out how many lives an accident like this can affect. I've done it myself, stopped to allow someone to cross,THEN spotted a bike in my mirror on my outside in the mirror. Luckily a beep and frantic wave made them go back to the pavement, but not a mistake I'll ever repeat. You ask why people stop to let people cross. I know that road very well, sometimes it is the only way you can get across, you can wait literally minutes there. Unless of course, as already pointed out, you use the pelican crossing only about 50 yards away, built for just that purpose. All makes you realise how precious life is, it can be snatched away in an instant
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 4 March, 2012 Author Share Posted 4 March, 2012 absolutely tragic, but totally avoidable. For starters the bike shouldn't have overtook (or undertook) without extreme caution and secondly there is a pedestrian crossing 30 yards from the incident Exactly what I thought. If you press the button on that crossing the traffic lights change straight away as well so you don't even need to wait.
Ric Posted 4 March, 2012 Share Posted 4 March, 2012 absolutely tragic, but totally avoidable. For starters the bike shouldn't have overtook (or undertook) without extreme caution and secondly there is a pedestrian crossing 30 yards from the incident Absolutely right on both counts. Whenever I see a car slowing or stopping, my first thought is "Why is it doing that? Is he about to turn right with no warning? Or has he seen something I haven't?". Yes, I will nail it past a car, but only if I know it's completely clear on both sides of the road, I can see there are no right-hand turns coming up, and the car isn't showing signs of doing any kind of manouvre - e.g. slowing down, drifting to either side of the lane, etc. If what's been described is how it happened, then the biker made a stupid decision, displaying no road sense, or concern for his safety of those around him. And the parents, likewise, showed no roadsense by trying to cross a busy, dangerous road with their young daughter. All of which feels quite hollow, after-the-event analysis... I just hope more bikers and parents will employ a bit more roadsense in the future. None of which helps the innocent little girl in the slightest
