norwaysaint Posted 29 February, 2012 Posted 29 February, 2012 Do we do it just to annoy them? They never seem that bothered. I'd be bothered if they called England Sussex or something. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland
anothersaintinsouthsea Posted 29 February, 2012 Posted 29 February, 2012 One of the Dutch fans' main chants is "Holland, Holland, etc".
Whitey Grandad Posted 1 March, 2012 Posted 1 March, 2012 Some of us know the difference. Some can't be bothered. For some it's both.
trousers Posted 1 March, 2012 Posted 1 March, 2012 We went to the game last night with 4 of our Dutch clients and I asked this very question. They said the only people in their country who are fussed whether they are referred to as Holland or the Netherlands are the c.10% of people in the country who don't live in 'Holland'. Everyone else is ambivalent to it.
alpine_saint Posted 1 March, 2012 Posted 1 March, 2012 To be fair, I am not sure most Dutchmen know either. Where does "Dutch" come from ? Why arent they called Hollandish or Hollanders ?
buctootim Posted 1 March, 2012 Posted 1 March, 2012 (edited) To be fair, I am not sure most Dutchmen know either. Where does "Dutch" come from ? Why arent they called Hollandish or Hollanders ? Its something to to do with the pronouciation of the German speaking Pennsylvanian Amish sounding like 'Dutch' instead of 'Deutsch' irrc. Asked some people in Utrecht (not part of Holland) what the difference was and if they cared - no-one minds. Edited 1 March, 2012 by buctootim
Saintandy666 Posted 1 March, 2012 Posted 1 March, 2012 I guess it is similar to when people insist on calling the UK England.

Dog Posted 1 March, 2012 Posted 1 March, 2012 Holland is the area around Amsterdam, Amsterdam is the only important place in the Netherlands, so Holland it is.
70's Mike Posted 1 March, 2012 Posted 1 March, 2012 Holland is the area around Amsterdam, Amsterdam is the only important place in the Netherlands, so Holland it is. TRY say that in Rotterdam or Eindhoven
Dog Posted 1 March, 2012 Posted 1 March, 2012 TRY say that in Rotterdam or Eindhoven I would if I understood what you were saying.
Colinjb Posted 1 March, 2012 Posted 1 March, 2012 TRY saying that in Rotterdam or Eindhoven Or Enschede.....
This Charming Man Posted 1 March, 2012 Posted 1 March, 2012 My cousin works out of Holland and he says a fair few people he knows get annoyed with people calling the Netherlands 'Holland'. So that sold it for me, Holland it is.
Deano6 Posted 2 March, 2012 Posted 2 March, 2012 One of the Dutch fans' main chants is "Holland, Holland, etc". Do they? I was sat right next to the Dutch fans at Wembley last night (literally 4 seats away), and what they were chanting was apparently "oranje" (Dutch for...ok you got it), although it does sound quite a bit like a muffled "Holland" when you hear it.

The Dutch guys I was with said that their fans also chant "Holland"
Ohio Saint Posted 2 March, 2012 Posted 2 March, 2012 As far as the Dutch are concerned, I admire their "double", "courage" "going" and "double". I don't like their ovens.
