Saints away match shocks

Despite our success this year we still seem to be going into this weekend's game at Leeds feeling that a point would be a good result, or at least that's the general consensus on the build-up thread. It's almost as if taking three points would take us all by surprise to some extent. I tend to comfort myself with the rationale that stranger things have happened.

So can anyone give any examples. I know there was a thread recently about away days but what away games can people recall going into it without the faintest hope of getting anything from it and coming away with all 3 points? The most obvious one from recent memory for me has got to be the Reading away game in the Dutch's season. Will never forget hearing a cheer whilst queueing for a drink at half time and assuming it must have been a Reading equaliser only for someone to run onto the concourse and shout 'we ****ing got another!' leading to chaos in the concourse.

Would be interested to be reminded of any others.

Most memorable for me was the 6 nil away win at Wolves. On entering the ground I heard the team news and shuddered as our back 4 was cobbled together. I felt we'd get massacred and it seemed like that would be the case as Wolves dominated the early minutes. seven shots on target in the game and six goals and a brilliant away day. However the Wolves fans were fantastic that day and stuck behind their team for the 90 minutes including singing the name of Mick McCarthy at the end of the game.

Not that I can remember much about it, but my 1st ever away game as a mere ankle biter was a 6-2 win at Chelsea in the late 60's.

In the main it's been all downhill since then!!!

It was in either our 1st or 2nd season in the top tier and just winning at a place like Stamford bridge would have been a scoop but 6-2 FFS!!

Beating Liverpool 3-2 at Anfield in 97/98 when (from memory) Claus was lucky not to get sent off in the first minute. There were a couple of gobby scousers on the coach on the way up - they certainly kept quiet on the way back! :)
This is the one that jumps out at me, David Hirst scored if I remember correctly. I also travelled up with a Scouser and as you say he certainly remained quiet on the way back after being gobby and confident on the way up.

I can certainly remember Hirst taking a penalty so hard that it would have killed the keeper if he had got in the way of it! :scared:

Sep 2nd 1967. My Dad took this 9 year old, wearing his brand new knitted red & white scarf, and ended up in the Shed End. Stood down by the corner flag and tried not to cheer whilst Ron got 4 and Chivs 2. I still wear the scarf to games.

I would offer the 1-0 win at Anfield in 1981 with Steve Moran scoring in the 89th minute. Iwas on the Kop, again keeping schtum.

LOL ... another 2 Near Meeting Moments to add to the catalogue!!

We were down near the corner but along the side, near the right hand corner flag as you looked out from The Shed End. One of my few clear memorys of the day was seeing fights in The Shed End and at Waterloo Station where the noise was quite something as both sets of supporters goaded each other.

Anfield 81 I was in the away section which was nice as KK and Moran celebrated in front of us.

Beating Wolves 6-0 was a huge surprise. From memory we didn't have our full strength side out, the likes of Baird, Rasiak, Davis, Bale were unavailable.

The game itself was never a 6-0 game, Bartosz played fantastic that game. Point blank save from a Wolves player, penalty save and a double save in the 2nd half. Still reckon Wolves would have won that game had they scored that penalty right on half time.

Was a shock when we beat Reading in 08 as well, they were unbeaten at home and top of the league and we were just awful.

Feb 92. Beating Man U on pens at Old trafford. We went 0-2 up which I missed as I got to the game late and they pulled back to all square in the last 10 or so minutes. The best bit though for me was after hearing what sounded like the whole ground signing "always look on the bright side" at 2-2 was us signing it back to them as they streamed out of the ground.

4-5 at Norwich was a corker too especially as I was in with my Norwich supporting neighbours (at the time)

I have a vague memory of us smashing Chelsea 4-2 at the Bridge, possibly late 90s but I can't remember. It was before the Abramovich era anyway.

I was sat in the Shed End for that game (was it maybe 2002???), with my entire family-in-law who all support Chelsea. They were quiet on the way home that day...........

We didn't get 3 points but 3-3 at elland road under branflake was pretty much a shock, the same season leeds won the title.

Remember that well, we were 3-1 down, dowie bagged a last minute equaliser and we went so balistic in the away end that my dad lost his car keys, we had to walk back to the ground to get them. Had to tuck the scarves away as the locals were baying for blood.

There was an amazing day when Saints went away to Man City in the Cup and won, 5-1 I think. At that time Man C were the big name and Saints had been in lower leagues. It was the first time Terry Paine made his mark in the big time. I wasn't there because not many people travelled away in those days but I remember the match was a sensation at the time.

Unfortunately i had a few too many in the peacock pre match and slept most of the 2nd half behind a burger van :(

This one my mate a Liverpool fan drove me and a mate up from Guildford. He was worried sick about his car all the way through the game, and we took all 3 points... Lovely!

I remember going to White Hart Lane as a kid with my Dad for a FA Cup 3rd round tie, in 1990, when I was about 11.

We ended up winning 3-1 against a team I recall included Gazza and Lineker. I think they were one of the favorites for the cup that year and their fans rioted afterwards. I remember my Dad dragging me down into a subway to take shelter, whilst bricks were flying around smashing windows on Tottenham High Road.

I think I had that exact same experience at that Reading game. For some reason I thought we'd win that game tho. Didn't we play some really silky stuff that day that gave us belief the team had finally gelled?

I think in our relegation season we had a win up at Boro. I remember thinking that we HAD to win that game to have a chance of staying up, and it may be our best shout of an away win all season, but still thought we'd eff it up. Was very pleasantly surprised to come home and find we'd won!

Of course we still went down and they managed to draw with us at SMS that year being 2-0 down after 90 mins!

Winning 1-0 at Derby in the Dutch Duo Total Football Season. This was probably the only game that it actually clicked together.

Derby had been relegated with the lowest (?) amount of points ever and hadn't won home or away for some stupid amount of games 20 0r even 30 ish? ....... a statistic which is normally tailor made for Southampton to be next in the firing line and put that run to bed :?

So to actually win and do so in some style (we thrashed them 1-0 ) was a bit of a nice surprise.
