Southampton F C player of the year criteria?

Impact to the team. When we lack Lambert wee are not the same team, same applies to AL (although he has been quite in a few) therefore Lambert gets my vote. Generally in seasons where we are the under dogs, in most games our keeper or defenders get the vote as they are busier.

Criteria: I ask myself how the team would look if all of the first teamers were in the side EXCEPT the player in question. Then I do that for every candidate.

Whichever player causes the largest amount of difference is the player.

That is, if I could quantify each side's effectiveness or potential. It's still rather subjective but at least it's possible in theory.

Consistance over the whole campaign of a good or exceptional nature. I'd also add importance to the team into the mix. For me, there are two standout candidates this season, Rickie and Jos. Jos was an unknown entity when he signed, but has been consistantly solid at the back, chipping in with goals, and it takes a lot in the eyes of the Saints supporters to be better than Jose, and he has. Rickie though, takes brilliance to another level. The Championship is a new league for him, but not only has he become top scorer in it, but he offers to much more to the team with incise passing, assists and commitment. Without Rickie, I'm pretty certain that we'd be lower down in the table, even if somebody had stepped up in his place.

So it comes down to who is more important to us this season, and as Martin did a good covering job during Jos's absence, it has to be Rickie thus far. Can the outcome be changed? Well it depends on player's form until the end of the season, but Guly, Adam, Cork and Morgan would need to win us this league single handedly to displace Jos and Rickie as the top two.

For me its consistency of performing to a high-level throughout the season. Lambert and Jos are the two players for me. Lallana is a fantastic player but hasn't been as consistent as the other two. Thats not a criticism but just the reason he is third choice in player of the year. I think Davis has hardly put a foot wrong all season really. Richardson has been solid. Fox has got better and better after an okay start.

Criteria: Whoever has been our best player this season!

A lot of people will point to Ricky Lambert as our player of the season largely for his goals. Many might also suggest Adam Lallana, due to his flare.

I wouldn't rule out Frazer Richardson at all, whose probably far exceeded everyone's expectations - and I think the same goes for Jos Hooiveld as well, who everyone didn't expect much of, but how many goals have we conceded since he's been back in the team?

In past seasons Jack Cork would have won it with the performances he's put in but 3 players have really stood out: Jos, Lallana and Lambert. If it hadn't been for Adz injury's I'd have gone with him but for pure consistency of performance the other two edge it and of the two, I think you have to go for the striker (especially as this is Rickie's first season at this level and he's made it look like he's played there all his career).

Lallana has been excellent, but inconsisent since his injury just before our trip to Derby. Lambert, Hooiveld and Cork have all been consistently excellent, hence they are my top 3.

Lambert wins as he is absolutely vital to our success, at least as far as being the best team in the league goes. Hooiveld 2nd, Cork 3rd with the lack of goals being his only disappointment. Honourable mentions also to Lallana, Chaplow and Richardson.

Guly has been good, so have Fonte, Fox, Davis, Morgan, Hammond and De Ridder. Strength in depth indeed.

Trouble with that criteria is I would have to say Kelvin, where would we be with Bart/Forecast as regulars?

Has to be Sir Rickie for me.

Nice idea... but using that method would leave Kelvin as the outstanding candidate (followed closely by Jos and Fonte...)..[Weren't loads of people on here backing Harding as player of the season only 2 years ago... how times have changed!]

My criteria;

has the player had impact across the whole season?

has the player "turned up" for away games (this is a hang over from watching Saints play away over many years when we would lose and helf the team didn't bother making any effort away from home).

has the player been critical in creating / scoring goals?

has the player been critical in stopping / goals scored against us.

who played well in the last game before I make my decision !!!!

probably the most important - does the player have character and help bond the team with the fans.

Even though Rickie and Adam are my favourites i think Jos has had a massive influence on the team since his arrival.

In which case, look no further than the massive dip in form we suffered when Chaplow got injured. His contribution to the overall team prior to that point was immense and, IMO, the biggest single reason we had managed to storm our way to the top of the table and stay there.

However, because he was out for the best part of 3 months, and still hasn't got his previous sharpness back yet, it's unlikely that I or anybody else could claim he performed consistently enough over the entire season to deserve the award.

We are the top scorers in the league, with the individual top scorer as well, so it would be scandalous if a defender was to win it (IMO, of course), therefore there is only one real candidate for me...

Mr Richard Lambert, take a bow son.

Has to be Ricky for me with Adam and Jos joint 2nd and Chaplow 4th.

Without Ricky we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are. Our standout striker, infact the whole division's standout striker.

Bit unlucky for the other guys as in many other seasons any one of them could have won it.

Good point. I think that what I would do is nominate players who you'd think are candidates - Rickie, Adam, Jos, Chappers, whoever - and then only evaluate those. If we all know that one player is the best we have and we have no depth behind them, but yet that player isn't outstanding but just merely adequate, I don't think we'd nominate them.

It's not perfect, I see, but I still think it's useful.
