Blackberry Playbook

I have a 2TB HDD attached to the home network router. You can read, write and stream from it using all the windows devices (XP & 7). My next project is to access it with the Galaxy Tab & Playbook. If I get there I'll post up how it works. Then you can just load up & go.

Do something similar myself, have a 2TB NAS drive connected directly to my router. Then use an app called "Hipserv" on my ipad and iphone to access the content out and about / or at work.

So I connect a HDD to my router, download app to the xoom / ipads / tabs and can then access all the content on it?

Or am I being more fu.ckwitty than normal?

Chances are my IT fuc.kwittery will prevail so in which case if you can provide a link to the sort of drive you mean I'd be grateful.

I'll assume Hipserv is like Dropbox?

That's my challenge, although I'm looking at ES File Explorer rather than Hipserv or Dropbox, 'coz that seems to be compatible with the Blackberry tab as well. I've got a Blackberry Playbook and a Galaxy tab to cope with, but no i-pads.

The trick seems to be having something called "samba share" set up on the attached HDD. I'm still looking into what that means. I don't think my attached HDD is a true NAS. It's just a 2TB USB HDD (Buffalo) plugged into one of the USB ports on the router, but I can access it from windows devices connected to the network.

Worked on it over the weekend, and ES File Explorer does the trick on both the Playbook & the Galaxy Tab. A piece of cake to install on the Galaxy, as it's an Android App and you can install it straight from the store. A bit more complicated on the Playbook, because it's not available in the Blackberry App Store, so it can't be installed directly. It has to be installed via a PC connected to the Playbook with a USB cable.

I can now stream all the media content to the Galaxy and the Playbook from the Network HDD over the home WiFi network, and also copy music or video to either of them for travelling. Slight downside is that with the basic video player on both tabs, you can't bookmark how far you've watched if you log off and come back later to continue. But I guess if that's a problem you could install a more sophisticated video player app on the tabs.

Sorry for the late reply!

I have a Netgear Stora NAS drive,

Its just the chassis and doesn't come with HD's, so I put two 1TB HDD's in, it comes with a CD with all the software you need to talk you through installation and set up. During setup you create an account and these are the details you use to long in to hipserv. Obviously, you need a PC/Mac that is already connected to the same router for this initial set up. Its a pretty simple to set up to be honest. You could spend loads more and get a lot more sophisticated NAS drives, but this does everything I need.

I then downloaded the Hipserv app on to my ipad and iphone (also works with android and playbook) which again is pretty straight forward to set up, just enter the log on details of the account you created when installing the NAS drive.

I store music, films and photos on the NAS drive, and Hipserv allows me to see all the files stored on it with an easy to use interface. Obviously, it works best when you are at home within your own home network, but It can be used where ever you have a wifi connection. I have used it at work and in hotels etc which offer slower broadband speeds, but it still works very well, just a little slower!!

The Netgear drive and Hipserv combined offer a wide array of features so worth looking in to that via the links. I would have to mention though, that the netgear comes with a 30 days "premium" service, after the 30 days your account downgrades to a "basic" account and you have to pay £12 per annum for the "premium" service. I did think the £12 charge was a little cheeky to begin with, but I was so impressed with the features and the fact that I can also see the NAS drive via my PS3 and TV, I decided that £1 per month was worth it!!

You also have to be aware of what can play on what, not all file types are compatible with all devices via this set up, for example, I cant view .avi files stored on my NAS drive on my ipad or iphone, but I can view them on my TV or via the PS3.

Ah, one thing I have forgotten to mention, is that you can also access the contents of the NAS drive via anything that can view the internet, just navigate to http://www.mystora.com\yourlogon and view the files from there.

Hipserv looks like the way forward!

Thanks for the detailed reply, appreciated.
