The Number 7's...

Saint-Armstrong

the order i'd put them in

1) keegan by far the best player we have ever had

2) Paine 800+ games

3) Le Tiss

4) Alan Ball

5) Lambert

Difficult to put them in order, for example was KK really a better player in his prime than Alan Ball ?

In order of their contribution to Saints ? Probably:

1)Paine

2)MLT kept us in the top flight for several seasons,

3)Ball who got us into it,

then probably KK , but if RL tops 30 goals this season to take us up two seasons on the trot he will overtake him in my book

I thought Skacel and Phillips did alright for us, it's just that a fair sized chunk of the fan base had ridiculous expectations of them. Kanchelskis was a bit of a gamble by Strachan, clearly well past his best but worth a try. Hajto was signed by Redknapp as cover at CB, but ended up mostly at RB. Had a decent crossfield pass on him (usually to Kosowski) but looked out of possition most of the time. He came back playing CB for Derby a few weeks after leaving and did alright, think that was on Ostlund's debut.

I think we should be looking at it as Badger says, what they did for Saints, not how good they were throughout their career.

I have to agree with the Paine / MLT / Bally trio ... way ahead of Keegan, although his signing made a great impact on letting the world know who we were, he was only here for 2 seasons, and was crocked for half of the 1st one. I would put Lambo ahead of KK and on par with Bally in terms of contribution to the team.

He should really be wearing number 9 in old money though shouldn't he? Competing with Big Ron, Super Mac, Steve Moran, Shearer and Beatts.

Apparently we're about to sign Rudi Skacel and give him the number 7.... Heard rumours about him signing on the pitch. More to follow.

:lol::lol: L.M.F.A.O that is brilliant!! How long did it take you to think of that one? OMG I think I've laughed so much I may have cracked a rib.

Not yet, but if he establishes himself and us in the Prem then yes.

Agree with the second point here, RL is in the No 9's league for me too.

Since we've "officially" had squad numbers it's something like this:

Le Tissier - 1993-2002 (yes, I know there was football before the Prem, they didn't have squad numbers in the first season either; it was from 1993/4)

Kanchelskis Sep 2002- Feb 2003

Phillips August 2003 - June 2005

Hajto July 2005- Jan 2006

Skacel July 2006 - May 2009

Lambert Aug 2009-present

There are a couple of gaps : Between Kanchelskis and Phillips (which I think was filled with talk of retiring the number 7 shirt) and between Hajto and Skacel - it's possible someone had number 7 for the first 6 months of Burley's reign and I've forgotten them, we did ship in 15 players at that time ?

I have to say that my memory is that Bally was always No:-7. Wasn't Nick Holmes No:-4 ?? But as you say could be my memory playing tricks.
Just looked at In That Number and you ate correct Bally played 7 and Holmes and then, Williams played 4, even though the latter 2 were the more attacking players.

Le tiss was the best player to ever play for us. Played his whole career in top flight and was loyal to us. His goals used to come at really crucial times too. Paine played a lot of his career in lower leagues. Most saints fans voted le tiss our greatest ever player.

Sorry it took so long, been having computer problems. checked the promotion season prog's, Williams definitely No:-4 Holmes :-10 Bally :-7. What had me confused was that a couple of the away prog's had the numbers mixed up, which I'd seen on line. Anyway we have had some magnificent No sevens as said. All equally important at different times through our history. I was not privileged to have seen Terry Paine in his pomp. Le-Tiss had pure magic in his feet. Bally was our heart beat & leader on the pitch. Lambert has really stepped up to the mark & although he is a True no:-9, he deserves to wear what is a special shirt to this club. He may not have the silky skills of a Keegan or Le-Tiss but has does have skills & the talent which will hopefully shoot us back to the top league. Maybe not a legend yet but well on his way.

That would be a poll consisting of "most Saints fans" who had never seen Paine play but at the time were watching Le Tiss regularly ? How very unbiased.
