I reckon if we were naive and got it down to play, we'd have constantly been harried off the ball, passes would have been under hit and our retention would have been pretty poor.

On pitches like that, and against teams like that, you need to roll your sleeves up and go about winning the game to the conditions. We're fortunate to have more than one string to our bow and having a player like Lambert to hit up top is such a big plus for any team.

This was a terrific professional away win, that was masterminded by us playing the conditions.

You could well be right. Too many times in previous matches where we have lost we had been muscled off the ball, and been second into tackles and interceptions. This last part of the season may be less attractive to watch. Beginning at Leeds. We can't afford to drop away points now.

No pleasing some people. To be underwhelmed by a 3-0 win because the style of play wasn't pretty on an awful pitch is frankly obsurd. These are probably the same people who were moaning when we lost on similar pitches under Pardew, saying we couldn't "mix it" or win ugly. I despair sometimes

Tis teh fickle nature of all us fans - we are mostly naturally negative... thinkabout those fans of teh Arse, Man u and chelski etc, constantly moaning by 'ONLY' getting 1 trophy or finishing in the CL position... I think there are times when its sometimes better to lose 3-4 but having 'outplayed teh opposition in terms of 'real football' - afterall we do also want to be ENTERTAINED, but the last 13 or so fame sof a season when you are in with a chance of getting promoted is not one of them - now its JUST about results - we have played enough lovely football this season to feel proud that we play try and play the game in the 'right' way... so we should now be pleased that we can win ugly when conditions/opponents tactics are against us.

I dont believe as some do that its always just about results - the style is for me important, but not when it comes to the crunch time. Does anyone believe the Spanish were 'disappointed' because they beat Holland in the WC final without being able to play their best game... because the Dutch made it ugly? 3-0 away from home on a crap pitch against a side that have shown they can mix it up is a great result.

Agree totally. Far too many moan that we can't "mix it" and aren't tough enough and yet when we win ugly, as was required yesterday, they moan that we aren't playing like Brazil.

To go up we are going to grind out results like yesterday as well as stroke the ball around.

you are far too precious. It (the performance not the result) was horrible to watch and fans that pay their hard earned are well within their rights to tell it how it was - a good win, but a below average performance. If you don't like hearing a bad word about SFC I suggest you give web forums a wide berth.

You can play well and lose, and play badly and win. It was the latter yesterday. Funny, many fans are criticised (called happy clappy)on here for applauding a losing performance too.

Chez, I noted your report and whilst we want to play good passing football the pitch was truly awful, good football was impossible to play. The general view was that the tactics were spot on. Seems the result proved that.

Too often we have gone to these type of grounds and lost because we "wanted to play our brand of football" We have looked pretty but lost.

If we play like that every week you are correct, not many wil want to pay hard earned money week in week out. I am pleased we can "mix it" That was what was missing in seasons past.

I do agree with your point, it is entirely fair and reasonable to not be happy with the entertainment you've paid for. But I don't think it's fair to say the performance was below-average, as it wasn't. The performance was exactly what the players were asked to do, how they were asked to do it and it achieve the right result. To perform is to execute a certain task or set of tasks, they did that extremely well.

But as an attractive form of entertainment, it wasn't good at all, which you have every right to say and be unhappy about if entertainment is your priority.

Really.. complaining that we played 'bad football' when we win 3-0. Its hard to play pretty passing on a duff pitch. We'll do the pretty stuff when were at home on our carpet like pitch. A couple of seasons ago we would have lost that because we could never adjust. Be grateful that we now can.

I dont care how we win.. as long as we get the job done, who cares?

If we'd have tried to play beautiful football yesterday and lost, could you imagine the uproar? "We can't hack it", "we aren't up for the fight"....

We played the conditions perfectly, there was completely no need to be pretty yesterday whatsoever.

I was close to the pitch, near the halfway line and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be considering they play rugby on it. I thoughtSchneiderlin had a fine game and managed to play some football on it. The tactics may have been as much to counter Watford's style as to deal with the pitch.

Back now in Scandoland after a cracking weekend.

Great sing song before the game in the pub on the High street, Moon over Water?

Vicarage Rd - might be okay when its finished. BUT they did like their effing PA system. It cancelled out every other sound in the ground and right up to the kick-off. Turn it down ffs.

Watford - they seemed to have given up, both the team and their fans. We strolled through this match. Not pretty but effective.

Had a right jolly evening with a bunch of scousers at our hotel afterwards. They (rightfully) wer'nt that confident about getting a result at Wembley. That shows the strength of the Championship.

Hopefully this should get a few of the dropped players (Sharp, Hammond, Punch, Guly,DeRidder) motivated to up their game and come out fighting in the coming weeks.

Back next week for dirty Leeds. Cant wait!

A very pleasant surprise. Let's hope this new surge of confidence will carry us through to the end of the season. All we have to do is keep winning and the rest is academic, how many points, who will challenge hardest etc.

Please, just for once Saints win a meaningful trophy in style. The last three times we got promoted to Division 1 & 2 we ended up being second... First would be very nice for once!

Next, we have to overcome that TV jinx.
