Emergency Loans - is it fair?

Surely the concept of the transfer window was to prevent clubs enhancing their teams outside the two limited periods. Reeves to the Daggers and Holmes to Oxford are two examples of clubs that are competing at the top or bottom of the table strengthening their squads outside of the window. We also hear that Birmingham are doing the same, and contrary to an 'emergency' the press report the Birmingham signings as a 'boost to the club's promotion drive'. If getting promotion counts as an emergency, why aren't we back in the market to bring in two or three strong loan signings. How about the CB we need, not just as cover but prem quality....

We don't need any more loan signings, where on earth are we going to fit in 2 or 3?

Falque, De Ridder, Guly, Jaidi, Butterfield, Bart, Barnard etc cannot even get on the bench these days.

We do not need any more players.

Other teams loaning in players are to boost their already thin squad, and Birmingham's squad has always been thin.

I would still like a quality CB for the run in in case Jos or Jose get injured. I know Martin is quite good but when our first choice pair are together we seem so much more confident at the back.

Martin has played well when called upon and it would appear Seabourne is also fit again. Whilst he's nothing special, you're not going to get much better in this league as a 4th choice CB. We're fine.

We don't need anymore average players at this club right now other than those that would help us reach another level.

If Manchester City wanted to loan out Tevez for match practice then I'm sure he would take us to another level.

I would even put Walcott in that bracket as a confidence booster to help him get in the England squad.

I've heard it all now.

Walcott is already in the England squad.

It's just a loan window. Ignore the 'emergency' bit, that word was just inserted to placate UEFA.

What concerns me is Jos obviously has something wrong with his hamstring- he has gone off twice with it and on Saturday at the end of the game Jose was holding his hamstring- could you imagine how screwed we would be if they were both injured? We have a lot of games coming up and I am pretty sure they won't both play all 14 games.

though your point is well argued Professor, I think the use of this loan system goes a bit deeper.

Lower league clubs have very limited squads primarily because of the financial commitments involved in having more than 15/16 players on staff.

(P*mpey are a prime example even in CC.) Having a couple of injuries, and a suspension or two can mean they're down to 11 fit men and an empty bench.

Clubs with better resources (like ourselves) need to keep 22 fit players, plus a chance for the post-Academy aged pro's who are normally lucky to get a bench place - let alone get on the pitch for 15 mins...to get some real games, and not just U21 outings against someone else's Academy side.

I think the emergency loan system is good for both clubs concerned. The loaning club will get a chance to field a full side and get some cover for those struggling against injury, whilst the loanee's proper club give him the chance to get some games at a better level - though many are clearly not good enough for a regular spot in our first team.

At worst, the loanee will get accepted by the second club, whilst realising they are not potentially Prem. material at that time in their career.

recent examples are Oscar Gobern, Joseph Mills, Jack Saville and Jack Boyle...all promising at the Academy stage but didn't turn out to be a Bale or Walcott:

At best, they will flourish, find form and return as better players worthy of a crack at a first team spot. ...again players like Bart, Simon Gillet, Adam Lallana gained valuable experience when younger and benefitted from it later on.

Younger players who don't make it with Saints aren't left out in the cold and frequently find a regular place in L1/L2 / Conference sides and make "some sort of career " for themselves. A Win-Win situation surely ?

......and YES... I'd like another CB in the squad, too - just in case. Who knows ..we might find another Jos Hooiveld - wouldn't that be good ?

We have 3 good centre backs, not enough IMO but would be tough to keep another one happy. Without Jos we're a hell of a lot weaker anyway, but that's the price of having such a good player isn't it.

Point is that if both Jos and Jose were injured we would then use the emergency loan system. While the loan window is open there is no need to get anyone in unless they are needed. Thats why we didn't go any further with the guy from Stoke (soory can't recall his name, Collins?). Jaidi is supposedly ready if needed (in an emergency) hence why he was given a game against Reading Dev Squad the other day.

i don't really like the emergency loan system, the who transfer thing is a dog's dinner because of UEFA, but then again we have made good use of it ourselves in the past, not just for Jos, but also Richard Wright a couple of years ago.
