Local Radio Stations

They are all pretty terrible in my opinion. Solent is quite funny due to it's quaintness but the music is so middle of the road it hurts whereas Wave 105 makes me want to curl up into a corner and die. Can't say I've really listened to it but my other half has Jack FM on in the car for her 15 mnutes to and from work.

The only half decent music station in the day is 6 Music because they actually give airtime to some interesting records no other stations would entertain. But sadly even they play plenty of landfill indie tripe that bores me to tears. Sometimes I listen to Radio 4 because it makes me feel smug. 1Extra used to be ok, but their playlist has drifted into churning out too much of the bland US R&B that Radio 1 plays anyway rather than the more interesting UK hip hop which they've now relegated to specialist evening shows.

There's some decent shows on Rinse but you need to stream it outside London and it's quite erratic in the quality of its output.

The best radio show in the country is Tom Ravenscroft on 6Music, Friday evenings 9pm-midnight. He's John Peel's son and plays a similarly random bunch of bands, producers and noise makers. To anyone that likes radio I can't recommend it highly enough.

Dont listen to local radio much, maybe a bit of Jack FM in the morning but im sure they've had a break in and been left with about 15 records.

If I've not got 6 music on its NME radio. Bloody good is the only way to describe it. About 1 advert an hour, and nowt but quality tunage

We have Wave 105 on in the office. When we first started to listen to it it was great, used to play plenty of rock, (Queen, Meatloaf, Led Zep etc I even recall them playing Deep Purple), mixed with plenty of 80s 90s & current stuff, but in the last few years it's gone more uptodate. Ther's too much A-dull & Olly Murs now, but with the odd gem thrown in. TBH we only keep it on now because the mystery year is usually pretty good & worth listening to, and when that's finished no-one can be bothered to re-tune because the radio is pretty ancient & you get loads of interferrence when you go near it.

Got Wave 105 in our office. Music is a bit hit and miss, some decent songs every so often but most of the time it's just sh!te.

Also i've heard the same f*cking adverts over and over again.. Apple home improvements and some out of tune bint singing about a coffee machine, i'm never putting my money towards either I hate them so much now, must get played about 4 times any hour it puts me close to tears.

Local Radio is dire, Solent is well words fail me, it's like stuck in some sort of time warp. It's knitting pattern radio. Wave is not much better.

I worked in the States during the 80's and local radio is so much better than here (I know there's obviously a larger "local" area) but it was diverse, exicting and different. ****ing hell, my Granny would like Solent & Wave.............

I really can't abide local commercial radio. Most of the DJs have a crappy DJ voice, and oddly, this doesn't seem to change much when you go further afield.

If I want Radio, it's Radio 4 all the way for me. If I want something that Radio 4 doesn't cover, I find a decent podcast - and if I'm after music, I have plenty of my own. Good stuff too*

Living in the US, there's more variety here (many more stations allowed I think so that's how it happens) but the most popular ones are the sort of Wave 105 clones (Z92.5 and Shine 99 here in Kokomo, Indiana - may as well be taking a direct feed from Wave). I don't like country music though, and half the stations are bleddy country music.

Overall I've found I've grown too bleah with local radio here also. Clearly much more variety than back home in Southampton, but still... well, at least here you can scan through all the stations and usually find something good eventually. Before the adverts come on again.

Personal choice now: BBC podcasts of Mayo/Kermode and Late Junction from R3. That is a show with one wacky choice of music.

Agreed. I can't abide radio with commercial advertising. In the car I listen to the CBC for news and such, and I listen to BBC Radio 4 podcasts that I download each Sunday. At home I don't bother with radio; I listen to my large collection of vinyl LPs and CDs.

I'm also a 6Music fan, they play a good variety of stuff compared to most other stations and I like a lot of the presenters on there (Lauren Laverne, Jarvis Cocker, Peter Serafinowicz etc).

Locally i'll stick on Jack FM - the MD of the station told me today that if listernership keeps going up as it has done over the last 3 months then Jack will be the faster growing radio station ever. Decent music and no awful DJs like most local stations seem to have.

Please please tell your MD he will make it the fastest growing station in two months !! if Jack stops playing the same records over and over again, I think I counted the same song by the Jam three times in one day, yes I do like Bam Bam in the morning, Robin Caddy is good also."Saints Fan too" I know its a commercial station, but some of the adds are getting very very tedious too.

So No Blondie, no Jam, no Dire straits on repeat, that and TJ waste and Old Sarum go go go one.

Happy to help

I'll pass that on to the person in charge of playlisting at the station, i'm sure he'd be happy to get some feedback. I agree that some songs seem to be played slightly more than others, but it's difficult to rotate the music evenly when there's only 2-3 hours of actual 'radio show' in a day - Bam Bam is the only DJ on the station. The playlist isn't infinite but there's new music being added to the playlist all the time so hopefully that should sort out the problem of songs being repeated!

Up here it's either Capital (alright if you're a 12/16 year old) Viking which is a bit like Heart or KCFM, which we have on in the office. A bit MOR but okay and has a decent enough mix and Tony Blackburn playing Motown on a Friday morning. Listen and swear at Talksh!te in the car, God knows why because Hawksbee and Jacobs are the only ones worth listening to and they are generally on while I'm at work.

When I first came here we had Dubai 92FM. It was OK up until Friday evenings (our Sunday night) when it went all Rick Dees & then C&W - suicide radio. Then along came an upstart called Channel 4FM which played a real mix of music, had funny and entertaining DJ's with all the stupid phone ins (one had a kid smashing his parents Dinner Service).

But then the Clones arrived, the ad revenues got split amongst more and more stations and so they all started to cut back, then with the recession the cut backs extended to the DJ's pay - basically now it is "Work for us for free, we are a marketing machine for your own Private Careers...

So it has become absolute garbage, DJ's last a few months before realising that actually t here is no "Private Career" opportunity. The music choices have dumbed down - Virgin Radio (yep really) is just wannabe Homie music for the "local" kids and the rest? Hell it makes us pine for the likes of Spire FM & Solent.

So the recession has really hurt "Commercial Radio" nobody pays for ads or any decent production work on them so you get the same garbage over and over and over.

They have recently tried to get a Rock Station going (US style) trouble is that it is on the other side of a Mountain range on the East Coast so you need to stick 14 coat hangers on top of your car aerial and hope the wind is blowing the right way in order to hear Stairway to Heaven 6 times a day.

You have no idea how good Beeb Radio actually is peeps

(Oh we had one decent recent station - Coast FM. Then they got cut back to ribbons and now - ready for this?

They just take a stream from....

Wave and stick their own "Coming Up next" ads over the ads & DJ's you hear in UK

Radio SET Online.

Polish radio.

Don't understand a word they say. Playlist is limited. BUT they don't play any Hip Hop and only danceable RnB. Do get to hear some great stuff that never makes it onto UK radio (or stuff before it gets to you)

Examples being Gotye & Ed Sheeran were getting airtime some months before they exploded over there. Down side is they were very late falling in love with Adele....

Love her to bits, but ot 4 times an hour

Wake up to 5Live in the mornings cos I like to know what's happened whilst I've been ZZZZZing and as I drive a lot I listen to that or a CD or 2 during the morning. Other times (like right now) it's Planet Rock and Jazz FM on DAB (particularly recommend Robbie Vincent on Jazz FM on Sunday mornings). Solent for Saints away and for those of you dissing them you should try listening to some other local radios - the sports coverage on Solent is pretty good compared to some others. For those on t'interweb I can also recommend FIP Radio - it's a French station playing non stop music of any type from opera to heavy rock to punk to soul to jazz... anything and everything and no chat except for their news once an hour. Anyone living in Brighton will be able to hear this on FM as somebody in town is boosting the signal.

Other than that nada. Here we are in 2012 and mainstream radio is still pretty carp.
