Saint Garrett Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 Has been on talksport this morning. Just coming to the end of his interview. Hardly a mention of Southampton and what we did for Alex. Said he had to take the oppportunity to move to a bigger club as situation can change very quickly. (He was talking like it was him moving from Southampton to Arsenal!!) Ungrateful b*stard !
Noodles34 Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 Jesus, Take your red and white tinted specs off and ask; what would you have done in his shoes?
Made in Southampton Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 I think the OP was indicating that he should have been a bit more grateful to Southampton not that he shouldn't have gone.
Mowgli Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 Jesus, Take your red and white tinted specs off and ask; what would you have done in his shoes? Opt for regular football for one seaon in Championship and review after that. It was a big ask to go from Div 1 to Premiership and expect to play regular football.
braveheart1983 Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 There's no need for him to mention that his son started from Southampton. At the end of the day, he choose to bring up his son the southampton way, we sold him for good money, it's turning out to be a good move for him, and Southampton are continuing to do well.....
Thedelldays Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 Opt for regular football for one seaon in Championship and review after that. It was a big ask to go from Div 1 to Premiership and expect to play regular football. then you would say that....as a saints fan...he, is not
Saint Garrett Posted 22 February, 2012 Author Posted 22 February, 2012 I don't blame him for leaving, just thought he'd mention that we clearly did well and he owes us for his development. I'd be surprised if he'd developed as much as he did if he was at that club down the roads academy. (if they have one?)
The9 Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 Not sure why he'd be talking about Saints at all, 28_F.
AK Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 Listen to it here. http://www.talksport.co.uk/radio/richard-keys-and-andy-gray/blog/2012-02-22/chamberlain-stoke-portsmouth-and-his-son-alex
Dig Dig Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 Who cares really? Anyone with any sense or knowledge would appreciate that we have a history of producing excellent young players and there has been numrous articles and references to our academy in the wider press. In relation to Ox or anyone else, don't expect people to be talking about what he did with us in League 1 now that he is playing prem/champions league football and most likely will be a full International soon.
saint-crinny Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 Opt for regular football for one seaon in Championship and review after that. It was a big ask to go from Div 1 to Premiership and expect to play regular football. AOC is now playing regularly in the Prem, getting great reviews, has played in the Champions League, and has a good shout of going to the Euros in the summer. He would more than likely consider that he made the right move.
doddisalegend Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 AOC is now playing regularly in the Prem, getting great reviews, has played in the Champions League, and has a good shout of going to the Euros in the summer. He would more than likely consider that he made the right move. Pretty much spot on. Much as we all hate to see our young talent f uck off to bigger clubs it's a fact of footballing life and I've no doubt we've done it and will do it to other clubs down the food chain. Though he probably didn't pick the best time to move to the gunners considering the way things are going there I'm sure his big fat pay packet will comfort him. On the other hand I always got the feeling that Marks motives for getting Alex a big money move might not have been wholly about what was best for his son... but what was best for dad....who is also his agent isn't he?
Channon's Sideburns Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 I think with Mark Chamberlain, he truly wants what is best for his son - remember he was a pro in the 80's before the big money arrived - he took the chance on his son being able to secure his long term future. Just one big hit from some clogger in the Champ could've ended his promising career in an instant. Console yourself with this - had Mark Chamberlain not moved Alex to us, the Skates would've been rescued with that money we got....
gaz Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 I think Alex has made more of his opportunity than Theo did. Same with Gareth Bale.
benjii Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 I think Alex has made more of his opportunity than Theo did. Same with Gareth Bale. That's because they are both better than Walcott.
hypochondriac Posted 22 February, 2012 Posted 22 February, 2012 I don't blame him for leaving, just thought he'd mention that we clearly did well and he owes us for his development. I'd be surprised if he'd developed as much as he did if he was at that club down the roads academy. (if they have one?) Does he owe us? We got 12-15 million in payment. I would say that is payment enough.
LostBoys Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 This has all been said before - there was no way Alex could turn down financial security for life at 18 and his father do well at the same time. He used to come into the Supporters Club but has now been banned - good.
La BoIS Saint Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 What's all this rubbish about gratitude? Saints don't put players in the academy out of the goodness of their hearts. If he was **** we would chuck him out unceremoniously. He wasn't and we got a shedload of cash. That's the end of it really.
Turkish Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 I agree with the OP. there is nothing that makes me more angry than these ungrateful b*stards that play for us and leave and don't mention what a great club we are. I cant watch MOTD when Shearer is on it as he hardly ever thanks Saints for all they did for him when on there. I saw Gareth Bale interviewed after his hatrick in Milan last season and he didn't mention Saints once! It makes me so angry how ungrateful these wa*nkers are.

And fwiw, I dont much care what the skate tw*t says. We did ok from the sale of oxo, he was always likely to leave at some point. Why would his father mention us, especially given his fishy background?

They couldn't get a photo developed at Boots down there let alone produce a conveyor belt of potentially good to great youngsters!!

Hatch Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 Mark Chamberlain is a Skate, of course he talks complete crap. They can't help it.
Verbal Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 Jesus, Take your red and white tinted specs off and ask; what would you have done in his shoes? What he's done is put Oxo's younger brother into the Pompey youth set up, presumably after the bust-up with Cortese. I can see that working out well.
Gordon Mockles Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 Has been on talksport this morning. Skate t*sser, what do you expect. Much like you'd never hear a Skate talk about financial prudence & friendly rivalry. It's not in their breeding! In fairness, the club was only ever used a mechanism to get him to the plateau on which he now resides. It's down the club to tempt the individual to stay with a series of well placed benefits, bonuses, financial rewards & otherwise in line with our sustainable projections but loyalty is a lonely bed fellow to modern day football. It's a bit off not even mentioning us but once a Skate....and bear in mind Cortese's parting swipe which was a bit school playground and petty, that won't encourage good feeling (having left the club after not playing any higher than the 3rd tier of English football).
Gordon Mockles Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 This has all been said before - there was no way Alex could turn down financial security for life at 18 and his father do well at the same time. He used to come into the Supporters Club but has now been banned - good. Really, how juvenile and petty!
Saint86 Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 Can I just say that alex was superb, we all knew that, everytime we watched him play he stood out. Whether he is grateful or not, it is not for his dad to say. Let him say it himself in the years to come. Walcott at least loves the saints, just look at his autobiography (granted it is a short read ^_^) - and his contract is up soon?
solentstars Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 Really, how juvenile and petty!i agree met chamberlians dad in the itchen a few times and found him a decenct bloke but i suppose you are going to find some saints fans lkely to act like inmature kids i suppose its their age.
jam Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 Yes pretty obvious but AT THE TIME, it was a huge risk. That was the point. Conveniently ignoring the fact that Chamberlain is a former professional footballer, has coaching experience and is probably as well placed as anyone to judge whether a player is ready to make a step up to the big league.
aintforever Posted 24 February, 2012 Posted 24 February, 2012 Yes pretty obvious but AT THE TIME, it was a huge risk. That was the point. Not really. Staying here in the Championship was a bigger risk. As he says, things change very quickly in football. Wenger could have been sacked, new boss doesn't fancy him, chance gone. Having said that he would have been better off going to a club that wins trophies like Man Utd, Arsenal are in decline at the moment playing their usual tappy tappy ****.
Dr Who? Posted 25 February, 2012 Posted 25 February, 2012 I would have left, we are talking about Arsenal not Wigan. In his career this could have been his one and only chance to go to a big club.
Guided Missile Posted 25 February, 2012 Posted 25 February, 2012 Conveniently ignoring the fact that Chamberlain is a former professional footballer, has coaching experience and is probably as well placed as anyone to judge whether a player is ready to make a step up to the big league. Also, conveniently ignoring the fact that, as part of the transfer to Arsenal, Mark Chamberlain was employed as a "consultant" by Arsenal, for £200K a year...
deadpanmatt Posted 25 February, 2012 Posted 25 February, 2012 The £15 million is thanks enough I think.
Norwich Saint Posted 25 February, 2012 Posted 25 February, 2012 Given the choice between the money and his gratitude, of course I'd take the money, but if he hasn't acknowledged saints contribution to his development I think that's a shame.
Shrek Posted 25 February, 2012 Posted 25 February, 2012 Tweet from Alex Chamberlain: Alex Chamberlain @Alex_OxChambo Close Good to see Rickie Lambert and the Saints continue their good form... onwards and upwards! #Saints #Promotion
