Best national anthem

With all the quasi-patriotic nonsense being spewed by Dune (who else?) about the UK being christian, blah blah etc, and best hymns, blah blah, perhaps posters would like to offer up views on best national anthems...

England play Wales at Twickenham this Saturday and Wales are hot favourites to win. But is their anthem a winner?

Maybe the French or even the Yanks can belt a tune out... Perhaps the Iranians have a good one.

Let's see some good examples. Any takers?

It won't be ours because it mentions god and as we've already been told on here this week we aren't a religious nation so does not apply to us at all. Maybe we should change our Anthem to Blue Minks Melting pot to keep the liberal elite happy.
so your saying we are a reliigous nation then ,i better get my bible and look after the young choirboys then;)

The placid banks of Ipiranga heard

the resounding cry of a heroic people

and in shining rays, the sun of liberty

shone in our homeland's skies at this very moment.

If the assurance of this equality

we achieved by our mighty arms,

in thy bosom, O freedom,

our chest shall defy death itself!

O beloved,

idolized homeland,

Hail, hail!

Brazil, an intense dream, a vivid ray

of love and hope descends to earth

if in thy lovely, smiling and clear skies

the image of the (Southern) Cross shines resplendently.

Giant by thine own nature,

thou art beautiful, thou art strong, an intrepid colossus,

and thy future mirrors thy greatness.

Beloved Land

amongst a thousand others

art thou, Brazil,

O beloved homeland!

To the sons of this land

thou art a gentle mother,

beloved homeland,

Brazil

I like this for two reasons:

1) Hearing it means you are probably about to watch Brazil play;

2) The tempo of the vocals cracks me up. It's a sort of operatic rap, particularly when sung by a rabble of footie players/crowd at hyper-speed.

Here's a particularly berserk rendition:

And here it is being used by Maradona to flog some fizzy stuff in a tin:

The Chilean anthem is also a belter when delivered properly. Despite the awful sound quality this is a classic example of anthemry, got to love the explosive climax:

The French is a really good tune.

The Irish one is embarrassing. Sounds like an 8 year old wrote it.

I've sung "God save the Queen" at St Pauls many a time, in front of Her Majesty, (and once at Hampton Court Palace) with the full trumpet fanfare blaring out at the beginning. It sends a chill down your spine, I can tell ye, and thus I am biased.

On the topic of others, is it the German national anthem that goes on forever? I get so bored of that at the end of the F1 races.

Is it called My Lovely Horse?

British anthem is sh!!t. Sh!!t lyrics, bettered in sh!!tness only by the sound it makes.

My choice - I Vow to Thee my Country. Great lyrics, fantastic tune!

Best existing is the Russian and South African.

If you are talking about when Red Bull win, its the Austrian national anthem "Lande Berge". And yes, it goes on forever

Love the old Soviet anthem (see Hunt for Red October). On the subject of films, the scene is Casablanca when the French outsing the Germans is the best use of a national anthem in any media, especially if you view it in the context of the time when France was still occupied.

i like the Italian anthem, especially when its played before the rugby.

by the end of it the players look like they would run through walls.

Which is bizarre considering it sounds like the tune emanating from a cheap plastic toy made in China.

I love the French national anthem too. It even rouses me as an Englishman, and sounds great in Escape to Victory, though I do wonder what the French have to be so proud about historically.

It's amazing how many leftys don't like our country and put it down alot

It's amazing how many righties don't like our country and prefer to pay their taxes abroad rather contribute to the coffers of Great Britain like you and I.

But back to the OP.

Our national anthem is a durge. The best I think is the French. Maybe we should ask Sir Elton John to pen us a new song.

Agree with that. I also think England should have it's own National Anthem. Of those available Jerusalem would be my choice but I wouldn't mind a brand new one (maybe composed by ALW) like the Aussies and New Zealanders have (remembering they had GSTQ up to the late 70's).

An amazing Anthem is without doubt "Land of Hope and Glory" which is the National Anthem not only of Wales but of Brittany and the Celtic Nation

The Anthems of Germany. Russia always send shivers down my spine, but I have a great love for the Chinese National Anthem to which I awoke every day during the 20 years I lived and worked in China. Here is the CCTV opening anthem with English text at the bottom of the Screen.

Chinese National Anthem ( March of the Volunteers

I'd just like to chip in with this.

After the bagpipes drop out, it sends a shiver down my spine.

Probably the most passionate NA on this planet, always gives me the shivers. When the bagpipes drop out you can almost imagine william wallace leading a thousand hairy ars*d jocks over the hill to battle.

I'd also have to add the S.Afrikaan and french to that list also, makes the english one sound ****, Ozzy ones ok tho.:D
