  1. 1. Where will we finish 2012?

(copied from another thread with apologies, but more appropriate here)

Very much like last season, and I'll be happy to hang on to 2nd. Despite inconsistencies WHU are in a position to be clear at the top, as were Brighton last year. Birmingham keep winning, like Huddersfield did, but this year there's Reading too doing that so it's even tougher.

Many have said it before me, but it was never going to be easy. This is a tough league with plenty of serious contenders and the only way we'll get automatic is to do better than two of WHU, Reading and Birmingham over the next 14 games: relying on them to slip won't work. But we kept doing better than Huddersfield last season so now the challenge is there to do it again and to see how good we really are.

Still think we can do it.

Why are there 2 its in the thread title? ;)

Last night seriously depressed me. I really want WHam to slip up, but dont think they will now.

IMO its between us and Brum for the other automatic promotion spot.

Just going by the "I dont think 2 teams relegated from the prem last year will go back up automatically" I think we will hang in there. (Would obviously love it if we came top.)

true last night's result weren't good for us.None too worried about West Ham but Birmingham and Boro obtaining impressive away wins, albeit against poor opposition,is none too encouraging.True Blackpool and Millwall both played cup games on Saturday so you might read a bit of tiredness into those results as West Ham and Boro had free Saturdays yet again but Birmingham

played in the Cup as well. Barnsley must be absolute dire, mind you I think Vaz Te scored a lot of their goals earlier in the season.Think that will be shown to be a very astute signing on West Ham's part.

Pre-season I said after we signed Cork that we should be contenders for the play-offs, hoping if we avoided injuries we'd finish 4th. Now I'd be gutted if we finished that low. I've gone for second. Reading's stingy defence and signing of Jason Roberts makes them a threat, Brum have games in hand but as they're currrently still in the FA Cup with a replay to play, and have played a Europa League group campaign they're probably going to tire playing Tue/Sat all the way. West Ham have some bastard matches coming up but keep winning bizarrely and with 10 men, so they might pip us.

We've only got one top half team to play at home (Reading), and 5 big aways at Leeds, Blackpool, Mbrough, Palace and Hull, so if we can win our home games and not lose our aways we'll be up there.

Surprised more haven't gone for play-off winners. I've got us down as finishing 3rd behind Birmingham (Champions) and West Ham (Runners Up). Then we'll beat Midlesborough in the play-off semi to reach the final against Reading (who will beat Cardiff in the other semi). We'll then beat Reading 2-1 in the Final.

Job done!

I think we will lose 3 and draw 2 in the 14 games left.....

that means 29 more points........88 points in total....maybe even 86 points in total with another draw in that..?

86 probably won't be enough,I can see Birminghan getting another 35 points. They've got just a couple of tricky ones and a lot of crap sides to play.

Nearly 3% have voted for 17th, not bad. If we had proportional representation would be worth a few seats for us in the Monster raving Loony Party !

Exactly...and denying representation to lunatic fringes and hate groups is one of the best arguments against PR.

Champions. We are playing very well again now so why not?
Seriously deluded.

There is no chance of us finishing champions. This season is all about consolidation and in the end that is what we will get. I think we are building a fine team and next season we could be much more consistent and see ourselves promoted. I think this season is just a little early !

Much as it pains me to say it I can see us losing in the play offs.

For us to remain 2nd we need to do as well as or better than Birmingham, Cardiff, Reading, Boro, Blackpool and maybe others. Birmingham in particular are looking like they will not drop many points between now and the end of the season. We are relying on our form, especially away form, improving on the last 10 games or so. We are not the form team in the last 2 months. I suspect that we might drop to 3rd or 4th and then it becomes a lottery. Having been in the top 2 for so long our heads may not be right.

On the other hand our more recent form has been much better. I really hope it continues but there is no room for slip ups.

I think it's reached the time of the season where I can safely say the following.

Stick your consolidation up your ars* you f**king troll.

I would merely point out that, since we have more points than all but West Ham currently even after games in hand are played, to get automatic promotion we only have to match the records of every team other than WHam. Can we do that? Obviously we can, because over the greater part of the season we have already outperformed every team other than WHam. The most dangerous teams to us would seem to be Reading and Birmingham, and both of them have some very tough games in their run in: Reading have games away to us, Brighton, WHam and B'ham for example, and you know they're going to drop points in some or all of those. B'ham too still have to play several of the top sides, including WHam as well as Reading, and I note they just lost at home to Forest, showing how hard it is to keep adding wins & 3 points.

Of course, we are quite as capable of dropping points here or there as the teams around us are, but we do have the advantage of more points in the bag. It's ours to win or lose: so long as we keep adding home wins, the odd away win against beatable teams (like Millwall & Palace) as we did today at Watford, and mix in some draws against tougher opponents, we should be just fine to stay in the top 2 (knock on wood).

Fwiw, I still fancy us to win this league.

And another point: West Ham still have to play Cardiff, Middlesbrough, Brighton, Birmingham, Reading, and Hull -- all but Cardiff are home games for them. What this means, if West Ham win the Championship, in doing so they'll most likely help us get 2nd, because they'll be taking points from our pursuers. More likely, they'll end up splitting points with some of these teams, dropping one or two of those games even (Cardiff away, for example). And that means, so long as we just take care of business, our road to the title is right there.

Keep the faith!
