Sharp was not up with the pace and looks overweight just like Lambert was when he first came to us. The club will sort him out. He is an important cog but well done to Adkins for the half time change.

Lallana was man of the match by a mile. Good goal too.

Lee Tadanari's pace and play gave Derby all sorts of problems and to my mind changed the game. We had more pace and options. Also, what a goal!

We were untidy at times particularly leading up to half time and at the start of the second but once Martin scored we settled into a nice attractive form of football.

Hmmm, potentially interesting...Sharp not fitting in as neatly as hoped perhaps?

P.s. I've no doubt he'll score a shed load in due course :-)

Just got back from the game, frankly I think Sharp looks like he needs to lose 10-12 pounds and he does not look as fit as the other players, in contrast Lee was running around the field like a ball in a pin ball machine, very quick and a world class goal.

Just back from the match. It really was an easy victory, Derby offered nothing except a couple of decent set-piece deliveries. Saints' tempo and passing was superb, totally dominated midfield and the combination of the strikers and the joining midfield players was breathtaking at times.

First half should have been 3 or 4 up, and then once we got the 2nd goal it was always going to be a case of how many we scored. Morgan was absolutely outstanding today, and my MOTM. A superb display of presence, one touch passing, tackling, reading the game and moving the ball quickly and effectively, thereby making the midfield tick, just outstanding. Oh, and Tadanari's goal...best I've seen at SMS for a long time :)

Player ratings.

Kelvin 6 - had to deal with some hospital back passes, and generally his distribution was ok. Only had one save to make the whole game, and that was comfortable.

Harding 7 - Thankfully was more like his Forest performance at RB, as opposed to the Leicester disaster. Defended well, but quite wasteful going forward.

Fonte 8 - Assured performance at the back, passing was generally good, but seemed more comfortable with Jos as a partner than Martin

Hooiveld 8 - Shame he went off, it was almost embarrassing at times how easily he was dealing with Nathan Tyson, another good goal from a corner too

Fox 8 - Starting to settle down as a consistent performer at LB. Great defensively and offensively. 3 assists today shows his worth to the team.

Morgan 10 - Just outstanding. If he played like this consistently, we'd have trouble keeping the top European sides from signing him. Granted Derby gave him a lot of space, but a lot of the time he created that space for himself with clever movement or an excellent first touch. His tackling was also spot on, which is a side of his game that has improved so much since he joined.

Cork 8 -Thankfully put his West Ham shocker behind him with a typical quality performance both at CM and on the right of the diamond in the second half.

Lallana 9 - Could have scored a hat-trick today, he really is back to top form and is an absolute joy to watch. Great goal, started the move in his own half with a one-two with Tadanari, and finished well.

Chaplow 7 - His touch was a bit heavy at times, but he looks as fit as he did back in November and made lots of his usual lung-busting runs to close the opposition down and to make some vital clearances and interceptions during Derby's only good spell towards the end of the 1st half.

Lambert 8 - Typical RL performance, dominated their CB and held the ball up superbly. Unlucky not to score with a cracking free-kick, but really should have scored when free at the back post.

Sharp 7 - Like Lambert, held the ball up well and was involved with some excellent passing moves. Like Tadanari, he's excellent at pulling away from the last defender and with some decent through balls will create some good opportunities.

Lee 8 - Really good 45 minutes, sharp intelligent movement and linked up well with Rickie. After today he's surely given Adkins something to think about when he picks his starting XI for Vicarage Road, and also WHAT. A. STRIKE.

Martin 7 - Not as convincing as Jos, but made some excellent tackles and interceptions combined with some dodgy passes and clearances.

Puncheon 6 - Did a job, but wasn't really on long enough to make much of a difference, and the game was won by then.

Really like the Saints team at the moment, first time I can say that since we had Pahars and Beatts up front many moons ago.

Jos is a legend in the making - no idea who will get player of the season at the moment! Could be one of 5 or 6 I think!

Empathetic (and important) result even if the scoreline makes our performance seem rather more polished than it perhaps was at times. Being back top of the league again transfers some of the pressure back onto our rivals once more - which is just where I like it.

Three Good

Lallana - my MOTM again & it's getting hard to say anything new about him - just a very special player

Jos Hooiveld - I'm starting to think he could become a cult hero here, why Celtic let him go so cheaply is beyond me

Well done to both Tadanari Lee & Aaron Martin - both excellent goals but Lee's in particular will live long in the memory

Three Bad

The sooner Frazer Richardson is back the better, because today I thought Dan Harding looked quite the stand-in RB he is.

It's not just us playing well - I reckon Derby are a true mediocre mid table team regardless of who they're playing

We can only hope the injuries (?) to Hooiveld and Sharpe are minor matters

For all interested in what I can hear in and around the technical area:

Clough and his assistant said the following quotes throughout the game:

"Here we go again" - at 0-0

"We're getting f**king killed" - at 1-0

"They're killing us" - at 1-0

HT

"Are you f**king kidding, this is Burton stuff" - at 1-0 second half

from 2-0 onwards just a lot of swearing and resisting of kicking water bottles.

Funniest thing was one of their coaches: as the game started he darted off down the tunnel. About five minutes later he reappeared in the tunnel, leaning against the wall, on the Southampton side next to our subs and coaches. As Wilkins shouted instructions and the like from the top row down to Crosby on the bottom row, this coach would scrawl down things and pass them along to Clough. This happened until about 30 minutes when security latched on to what he was doing!

The coaches were delighted for Lee - what a character with the celebration.

What a performance. Top drawer all round but Lallana was on-fire. Lee's goal must be a contender for GOTS - it was blisteringly struck with the kind of accuracy Match of Day would be swooning over. Kelvin looked very assured today also, with one particular save that he got down to that he must have seen very late as it zipped low through many players in the box, but he just smothered it so well. We're top of the league, but I'm most happy with the performance today and just to add that Adkins team selection and substitutions were spot on.

Superb performance, especially second half when we dominated. Lallana, Fox and Schneiderlin were magnificent. Derby were extremely poor, lacking any kind of threat, and we put them away as ruthlessly as any team we've despatched over the last couple of years. Great to see and if it can continue for another 14 games we'll win this division.

Lee's reaction at full time was that of a 9 year old kid who just wanted to run around the stadium milking the applause....

he was bouncing......

fantastic goal, if you weren't there today, get in front of a tv screen this evening. How anyone can hit a football that accurately and that hard....

What was his celebration like - seen some bizarre earlier ones on you tube!!

Loved that, a thoroughly deserved win & a clean sheet too. I think Jos is now the more dominant of the centre-backs, a great signing & on his way to becoming a cult hero. Cracking goal from Lee, I thought he was going to shake hands with the whole stadium as he went off. Special mention to KD, that save he made when we were 1-0 up was a cracker & it was vital he kept hold of it, could have been different if that had gone in.

As good as we looked at times, I am not sure what that performance would have returned against better opposition. Just think we got out of kelter with all the recent games but a full week to recovery should sort all of that out. Lallana for me will be the reason why we do / don't get an automatic spot, he has that big an influence. As you say, once the Martin goal went in we were a different team.

Billy arrived with a couple of niggles but he is not in the best of shape with his weight. He is a very good player and an improvement for the squad, but he really does not offer any more of a plan B than we had before. It may be my imagination, but Ricky seems to drop further back at times partnering Billy.

I can see why Adkins is persevering with Lee, he does offer something that little bit different. If he can produce the goods in the next two away game, that would be good enough for me. Adkins had a very difficult job in getting Sharp, Chaplow and Lee playing time when they are not all at full fitness or form. But we got through this game with some important time for all three players and this can only be a bonus in the long run. Connolly should be ready for it after his extended rest, so the options are there.

Chung, brilliant, long time since i've seen as good a goal at sms. Love his attitude, think we have a new star in the making.

Lallana back to his best. Jos awesome. Morgan absolutely ran things in mf. Sharp was anything but, good tactical switch to bring on Chung. Only downside for me was Chaplow in 1st half, looked very rusty, touch awful, but he will get back to his best no doubt.

Question now is, who is backup keeper, clearly not Frazer. I reckon its Chung.

Forgot about the lack of keeper on the bench.

With only 5 players to pick - and the chances of needing a sub keeper - what at a guess, 1 in a 100 games. if that, see a keeper subbed - go with the flow, show bollcks and pick 5 outfield players.

We are Southampton we have 5 subs that can play where they want!!

Have absolutely no doubt Adkins will get Billy Sharp into shape like he did with Rickie...He will get a few goals for us this season but I think we will see the best from him next season. Lee is going to be the man to push us forward to promotion...That wonder goal is going to give him a huge confidence boost he could be something special for us.

Great game..took my five year old lad for his first ever trip to see saints with his grandad, who 35 years early took me to my first game..special moment when get three generations together at the footy and see your team score four! Loved Chung when e came on..we likened him to a puppy running every where trying everything and soy happy he got his reward with some fantastic touches in the build up to lallanas goal and that strike...he was so happy at the end and looked so happy to be here...

Exactly what I said a couple of months ago when the subject first surfaced. They called me a loon then and they still do to this very day.

We were fantastic, Derby were abysmal. Probably the best performance I've seen in a while at St. Mary's, and Derby are up there for the worst. I can only remember Crewe a few years back at our place who were as bad, and both Crewe and Derby's fans were awful.

Be sure to check out the 'all angles covered' on Saints Player when it's available, there's a fantastic shot of Tadanari Lee's goal from behind, it is INCREDIBLE.

Outstanding game, had to be a little dignified and restrained on the way home due to sharing the car down from Coventry with a Derby fan. Despite our usual 'let them play a bit' spell before half time that was outstanding. We havn't played that well for a very long time. Lallana's goal was symptomatic of everything right that we can do, a wonderfull flowing move with a superb finish. Cheung's goal seemed to come from a blind alley, that was absolute and genuine class that he managed to score it. Delighted for Jos and Martin too, a local boy scoring his first at home, i'm sure he's having a wonderful night tonight!

Wow what a special day that was. Sorry but I'm still a bit ****sed from a day in hospitality but that was a great performance. Lallana was class again and I was so pleased to see Tadanari score, what a goal!!

We really have momentum now.

We are Southampton.......
