Dr Who? Posted 18 February, 2012 Share Posted 18 February, 2012 'We must strive from now on that income exceeds outgoings'! Really have they never thought about this? Going to follow the NFL, work out the overall income for the league and divide by 32 and then you can only spend 49% of this on players. Saying that all American football players are American. What is the solution, is it as easy as my first line? The money will pop up in another league outside Europe and all the best players will pop up there instead. OK we won't have the world's best players playing in the PL any more, but ticket prices would be lower and we could look forward to watching teams consisting of more home-grown talent who wear the shirt with pride rather than for the financial reward. The PL money may well have attracted some very talented players over the last 20 years, but it has also attracted some arrogant d**kheads who I would rather not pay stupid money to watch. Not to me though, but yes to the premier league as a business model. It is the clubs that suffer, but the league need to step in. In America the league have all the money. pap Posted 18 February, 2012 Share Posted 18 February, 2012 Football has very few "winners". I appreciate that clubs get a fair old whack for finishing anywhere in the Premier League, but the vast majority of clubs don't make a lot of money. The Indy did this assessment of Premier League profitability in Feb 2010, the last time PFC went into admin. These are Premiership teams, most of them in ill financial health. Even those who don't owe money to the bank owe money to their owners. So clearly, it isn't sustainable - rising player wages are a big part of that. In the longer term, its difficult to see clubs being able to spend the same amount of money under the new Financial Fair Play Rules. That said, I'm not sure that players will immediately start plying their trade elsewhere. The European Leagues are well-respected and have a long history - the vast majority of world-famous club teams exist here. While there will undoubtedly be money-focused players who end up playing on big contracts in the likes of Russia and Qatar, there are a lot of other considerations ( visibility to national team selectors, image rights ) that'll keep players in the European leagues. Finances in football have been far too mental for far too long. If cutting our cloth to save the game means playing more home-grown youngsters on more modest contracts, not sure how that is going to be a bad thing for the English game in the long-run. Wade Garrett Posted 18 February, 2012 Share Posted 18 February, 2012 I think our clubs are increasingly foolish with money. Yes many top players are foreign and cost a fortune. But a far larger majority are flops, consistently worse than lower league players and youth players. Personally I'd rather see far lower wages, and a top flight dominated by lower league players and youth players getting their chance. I'm positive the quality wouldnt drop, and those domestic players would improve. You'd also get more commitment and more respect from fans. Many UK players seem reluctant to go abroad so I'm not sure they'd change that just to make more money. If decent foreign players want to come in for the football then great, I'd just rather it wasn't solely for money. Back in the late 80's/90's, our best players flocked to Italy to earn more money. It might be a little different now, but the best players will still follow the money.
