Hatch Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 I saw the news that Stuart Attwell has been 'relegated' to Football League games, probably due to some monumental errors. Who are the best / worst football league referees, or like me, can you hardly name any of them? Do any refs seem to 'favour' Southampton?
markyboy Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Roger Milford, absolute cock with his time added on against Oldham all those years ago. A good night on the Milton terrace ended up rubbish as we knew the plastic pitch awaited us.
Flyer Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Favourite, Gallacher, Foy (for his game against chelsea) and some bloke we had at Loftus Road that wouldnt give a FK or anything less than assault. It was a great game, players realised he wasnt going to be conned and it was like a game from before the PL was invented. Worst, Swarbrick, Gavin Ward, Atwell, Rennie, Singh. 4 of those 5 were fast tracked because they were young/non white and all 4 were a joke.
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 These are our officials for tomorrow. Any comments? Southampton v Derby County GRAHAM SCOTT Antony Coggins and Stephen Rubery Fourth Official Richard Martin

I have tried for years to forget that tw*t and you go bring him up, cheers for that markyboy lol and not wishing to be called racist but Uriah Rennie started as a decent ref but then believed his own press and ended up a knobber
alpine_saint Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Clive Thomas. Completely without peer.
Shropshire Saint Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 From that era Leo Callaghan, John Homewood, Jack Taylor and Norman (?) Burtenshaw were excellent referees.
hedgeend Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 These are our officials for tomorrow. Any comments? Southampton v Derby County GRAHAM SCOTT Antony Coggins and Stephen Rubery Fourth Official Richard Martin having watched a fair amount of conference south football over the past few seasons I can confirm that Antony Coggins is a complete and utter lunatic. he should never be allowed near a football pitch at any level , he is young and being fast tracked which tells you all you need to know
George the Rip Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 From that era Leo Callaghan, John Homewood, Jack Taylor and Norman (?) Burtenshaw were excellent referees. Yes it was Norman Burtenshaw, one of my all time favourites. Jim Finney and Kevin Howley should be added to the list IMO. Of todays officials only Howard Webb would get close to this group, but not that close!
Lighthouse Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Who was that muppet who just kept playing until Arsenal scored at Highbury in the relegation season? I think the 4th offical gave about 2 minutes stoppage time, RVP scored in about the 4th and the ref even gave them another minute after that to get a winner. I can remember Wigley stabbing at his watch in disbelief from the touchline.
sotonjoe Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Asking somebody to name their favourite referee is like asking them which STD they'd most like to catch. VD in case you wondered.
Ric Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 I have tried for years to forget that tw*t and you go bring him up, cheers for that markyboy lol and not wishing to be called racist but Uriah Rennie started as a decent ref but then believed his own press and ended up a knobber Not racist at all. He was a great ref at first - I really rated him - but wasn't he dropped from the top flight (or am I imagining that?) for being actually quite good? He then got with the programme and became awful. Still, he's nowhere near as bad as my pet-hate in referee's kit: Mike Riley. Utterly useless. Guaranteed to have at least one highly contraversial decision each and every game. Guaranteed to give Man U at least one penalty every time he was in charge of them.
Miltonaggro Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 George Reader, the finest, Milford the love child of Alan Biley and Saddam Hussein...
krissyboy31 Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Uria Rene (sp): There was an odd bod! Some weeks he could be superb, then others it was as if he'd never set his eyes on the football rule book.
TheCholulaKid Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Roger Milford, absolute cock with his time added on against Oldham all those years ago. A good night on the Milton terrace ended up rubbish as we knew the plastic pitch awaited us. This. Also, who was the ****** that sent off MLT and Barry Horne (?) in that Cup replay at Norwich in the early 90s?
Dr Who? Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Roger Milford, absolute cock with his time added on against Oldham all those years ago. A good night on the Milton terrace ended up rubbish as we knew the plastic pitch awaited us. Oh god, it was an own goal off of benali's chest, deep into injury time that never was. That goal was right in front of me in the Milton....still makes me feel gutted now!
Dr Who? Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Also who was it that sent jimmy case off, for ignoring the referee, but it was just because he could not hear him.
saint cozza Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Worst Walton, D'Urso and Dirkin Uriah Rennie was not very good either but think the bloke we had for JPT has done a few of our games this and last season always seems to have a good game. But Walton I would be glad if we never ever saw him again in football the bloke although that pen against Brighton was funny
Lets B Avenue Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Those of an elderly disposition might remember a little, fat, bald guy, in the 70's. He would sprint onto the pitch and proceed to do some serious warm-ups to the cheers of the crowd. Roger Kirkpatrick. IIRC.

Lets B Avenue Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Big sideburns and looked a tad overweight???? The same.
markr27 Posted 17 February, 2012 Posted 17 February, 2012 Trevor "Open your eyes" Kettle is always pretty bad whenever I have seen him, especially down at Huish Park when refereeing Yeovil Town.
Norm Posted 18 February, 2012 Posted 18 February, 2012 Fav, Mark Halsey. Met him at Anfield, nice bloke as well.
belgrave Posted 18 February, 2012 Posted 18 February, 2012 Played a charity match once that had Keith Stroud reffing - at the time I had the assumption that he would be a step up from the "normal" local / regional ref's we would normally get. Wrong. As useless as the rest. Best ref's (to me anyway) are those that have played to at least some standard.
FairWeather Posted 18 February, 2012 Posted 18 February, 2012 George Courtney - sent off Jimmy Case for an innocuous "professional foul" on the half way line at Old Trafford.

warsash saint Posted 18 February, 2012 Posted 18 February, 2012 No one mentioned Gerald Ashby for his performance at Norwich in a fa cup replay many years ago. Still have hatred towards the bloke for sending off Barry Horne & MLT Ref today was excellent
Saint Posted 18 February, 2012 Posted 18 February, 2012 Peter Walton is a disgrace. Also don't like Phil Dowd.
THINWHITEDUKE Posted 19 February, 2012 Posted 19 February, 2012 Who's the one with the beard that used to get mimicked on soccer am?
TheCholulaKid Posted 19 February, 2012 Posted 19 February, 2012 No one mentioned Gerald Ashby for his performance at Norwich in a fa cup replay many years ago. Still have hatred towards the bloke for sending off Barry Horne & MLT See post 19. IIRC Ruel Fox and Robert Fleck were the cheating S****horpe's that night.
Appy Posted 19 February, 2012 Posted 19 February, 2012 Who's the one with the beard that used to get mimicked on soccer am? Jeff Winter.
Golden Balls Posted 19 February, 2012 Posted 19 February, 2012 Peter Walton is by far the worst I've seen in the 17 seasons I've been going. Any of he good refs, I wouldn't know their name, as they dont get noticed.
THINWHITEDUKE Posted 20 February, 2012 Posted 20 February, 2012 Jeff Winter. Cheers, that's the chappie!
LeTissLeGod Posted 20 February, 2012 Posted 20 February, 2012 Lester Shapter. Must have been around 1978 when we played Fulham at the Dell and they had George Best, Booby Moore and Rodney Marsh. He sent off both Best and Moore, absolutely fantastic atmosphere. Of the latter day refs Alan Wiley is my pick, always tried to let the game flow. Uriah Rennie has to be the fittest ref I've seen, he used to overtake players when they were breaking at speed.
PDobbo Posted 20 February, 2012 Posted 20 February, 2012 No one mentioned Gerald Ashby for his performance at Norwich in a fa cup replay many years ago. Still have hatred towards the bloke for sending off Barry Horne & MLT Ref today was excellent He did die 10 years ago, 'hatred' might be a bit strong now i think.
OfnPanad Posted 20 February, 2012 Posted 20 February, 2012 David Webb for his refereeing of Tranmere 2-0 Saints in January 2011. He wasn't just poor, I'm convinced he would have been sacked on the spot if there was any sort of oversight of this match. The standout worst refereeing display I have ever seen in any match between any teams in any sport. Looking at his record, as if I needed more reason, his last match was Pompey's 3-0 away win over Posh! He's only ever officiated over that one match of ours and we should hope we never see him again!
