Just shows all these people who claimed to know what was going on and that work had started or been suspended were talking crap...

Er, it doesn't actually, but its good news nevertheless.

Nah....can't be true....the fonts of SWF knowledge told us the 'delay' must mean we're not financially secure as 'Clotese' (*chortle*) makes out...

Following the completion of extensive ground work at the Club's Staplewood Training Ground, the first phase of the expansive development is now complete, with new temporary buildings in place to accommodate the entire First Team and Academy staff.

"Phase Two" of the project has now started, with construction of the new first class facility at the Club's Staplewood Training Ground now underway. As part of this, the Club can now announce that in cooperation with AFL Architects, the leading UK construction company, Leadbitter, have been appointed as contractors of the project, and have already set up offices on the Staplewood site.

The partnership between AFL and Leadbitter is one with vast experience in this type of project, having worked together on Chelsea's Cobham Training Ground they will ensure that the specification of the new building will not only exceed existing standards, but also set new levels of excellence.

As the HQ of the Football Development and Support Centre, high tech offices, meeting rooms and a cutting edge Performance and Recruitment Analysis suite will house the specialist and administration staff from Academy to First Team.

In addition to this major project, the Club has also just submitted plans for a further building project on the Staplewood site. These additional plans will encompass an all-new complex, which is specifically tailored to accommodate all Academy youngsters between Under 9 and Under 14 level.

These new facilities will further support and exceed the Club's ambitions to set itself far above the highest category in the FA's new Academy categorisation, as it aims to achieve Category One status.

They include a new multi-use spectator stand with changing facilities for four teams that overlooks two full size pitches, accompanying open terracing which will essentially create two new stadiums at the Staplewood site.

A full size 3G pitch that can be used in all weather conditions will also be introduced and new floodlighting to cover the additional pitches will cater for youngsters in the Under 9 to Under 14 bracket.

The conveyer belt of graduates from each age group will continue to progress through the Football Development & Support Centre thereafter, right the way through from Under 15 to Under 21 as the pathway opens up to the first team for blossoming talent.

The long-term plans are focused on the development of the best young talent, with the aim of building a generational system that will simultaneously address the environmental and commercial ambitions of the club whilst creating a vibrant and dynamic learning hub that is sustainable.

As an inspirational centre for all, it will give our stars of the future the tools required to progress through the Football Development & Support Centre and beyond, into professional careers.

Inspiring development, and pioneering excellence - the new training facility at Staplewood is due for completion in June 2013 and will continue to enhance the new reputation that Southampton Football Club has earned of a progressive and forward thinking focal point in English football, with global brand recognition ambitions.

What's the auditorium thing about? New press room?

Partly perhaps, but being at Staplewood I would expect it's main use would be for watching videos of previous games and the opposition, not to mention to now infamous debrief... only thing missing is a blue pen for Nige to draw with.

It wouldn't surprise me if this would allow for the training of new FA Coaches on site, a dedicated lecture theatre with immediate access to first class facilities? Even Warwick University would struggle... and that's where most of the top end FA Badges in this country are currently taken.

Interesting option, hadn't thought of that, but eminently possible.

This, I think is one of the most impressive and exciting things about Southampton FC at the moment. The real investment in youth and development is there to see, this will attract the best young players. If you had a choice of a few clubs and got the tour of the new training ground and facilities, it would be very very hard to turn Southampton down.

I am often at the Norwich training ground, and there is no comparison, it really is like comparing champions league and Championship facilities, and I actually think Norwich training ground is a good facility, but that is how much advanced the Southampton facilities will be.

Top work Nicola and all at the club, will be interesting to see in the next 5-10 years if we are a team made up of home grown players.

All looks good at any rate.

What happened to the floor plan that was posted on here a while back?

It's all on the NFDC planning website, here's all the documents for the original planning application:

http://web3.newforest.gov.uk/planningonline/acolnetcgi.gov?ACTION=UNWRAP&RIPNAME=Root.PgeDocs&TheSystemkey=173436

I assume you mean these two:

Ground floor: http://web3.newforest.gov.uk/images/planningimages/161300_39.pdf

First floor: http://web3.newforest.gov.uk/images/planningimages/161300_41.pdf

Just reading the OS , do you think that one day this site could house the main Stadium , bit out of the way i know .

No, the location is all wrong and it's best to keep things as they are. Besides, from what I understand (A friend at a recent Stadium dinner...) One of the considerations would be to flatten St Mary's and start again on the same site, the superb location (For pre match drinks, walking access for locals... although, yes, driving can be a bit of a b*tch) is recognised by the powers that be.

That's what I was looking for, thanks.

And you can see a "press room" on the ground floor of that plan that looks like the auditorium in the picture.

Hmm, wonder where we'd play in the meantime...

Hope it doesn't sound too corny to say, but we're really going places aren't we? :D

Looks impressive. I grew up in Marchwood and my brother still lives there.. literally just over the road from the current entrance. It all seems a far cry from the old Road-sea days when I used to go there regularly. Anyone else used to go watch them?

Sadly not, but I did used to go past on the bus from Hythe regularly and always looked to see who Road Sea were playing as the bus went past the corner of the ground. Was too young to remember much about it... they folded when I was about 10.

Its an absolute disgrace the club have announced this at this time !! There are fellow football clubs close to going out of business and this is tantamount to rubbing there noses in it ! What a lack of respect particularly as our training ground looks better than other less fortunate clubs main ground. Has the club no idea how hurtful this news might be to fans of other clubs ? They must feel humiliated and devasted.

Hmm, a distinct lack of Cortese haters on this thread so far! I'm very excited about this work, we will have the set-up of Barca as well as being able to play like them soon as well! ;)
I'm happy to criticise Cortese when I think he's done something wrong, equally I'm happy to give credit where it is due. It's not hard. This looks very good.

Let's hope Leadbitter dont employ a load of cr@p sub contractors with a PO post code, like Barfoot did at SMS.

If completion for the entire project is Summer 2013, does that mean the players will be in temporary buildings (changing rooms etc) for the next 12-18 months?

The following paragraph wins my award for being complete marketing gobbledegook:

The long-term plans are focused on the development of the best young talent, with the aim of building a generational system that will simultaneously address the environmental and commercial ambitions of the club whilst creating a vibrant and dynamic learning hub that is sustainable.

I actually played there a few times at the tail end of my career both against Roadsea and when the occasional local cup final was played there

Ironically I got to know Peter Price, the owner of Roadsea, reasonably well

It is ironic because when I started playing in the Hampshire League as a raw 19 year old, and it was a tough old League then, I played against Peter Price (and his mate Terry Wort) when they were with Sandown.

Played two games in quite succession over Easter and was battered black and blue by both of them!!

Roadsea also had a very decent cricket team that played round the back of the current Dressing Room buildings

Is that the best response you can muster??
