"Football, you used to play football"

as someone sat with their lot in The West Stand (the prawn sandwich brigade) I have to disagree. I thought their fans were okay and ours were okay, i have heard us louder and prouder IMO, but it is funny how much of a different perspective you get in the opposing end (so to speak).

Acoustics I guess. I'm the first to criticise Saints fans, but our support was good tonight, proper away following.

listened last night on Five Live (I actually think Claridge is good in the commentry box - not biased as you'd have thought for an ex-skate) and they must have had all their microphones down the WHam! end. You hardly heard the saints fans at all. And reading from you lot that were there , they didn't get hardly any sound from the saints end. Shame.

at the end of the day, your own singing is always going to sound great, especially under a roof. I can only call it as i see it, from The West Stand, our fans have been louder. But maybe the acoustics just keep the noise inside that bit. In saying all that, it was great following.

Thought the chant was embarrassing.

Made us sound like a right bunch of c*nts. Before the sending off they were knocking it about nicely and their passing actually had some purpose and only started to hoof it when we were trying to build a bit of pressure and they were down to ten men.

We're not this super dooper passing team that everyone likes to make out we are. We rely heavily on hoofing the ball up to Lambert at times.

WHU fans are the first to moan at the brand of football they play at times under Allardyce but at the end of the day it must be working, they're above us...

That's why it's so embarrassing. So many of our fans think we're this untouchable passing machine. We've been shown up horribly in recent weeks by teams that get stuck into us and show a bit of desire.

Nobody was singing those cringeworthy south coast brazil chants (IMO we are quite direct). The chant was a good, off-the-cuff respnse to their smug "only 10 men" chant - whether they played hoofball last night is neither here or there - with 10 men, they were probably clearing rather than hoofing the ball. Still there's no doubt they've gone long under Sam (something the vast majority of their fans are uneasy about, accepting it as a necessary evil) - hence why the chant touched a few raw nerves -and from where I was provoked the biggest reaction from them all game.

I'm very happy thanks.

Just get slightly annoyed when we try and make ourselves out to be something we're not. Don't get me wrong, we're a good side but people on here do get carried away with it all at times.

Who cares? Big Sam plays hoofball, West Ham used to be famous for good football. Doncaster could sing it and it would still get under their skin.

I get slightly annoyed when some just knock the club and its supporters, live and let live

The chant was nothing to do with Saints i.e. at no point were we singing it's like watching Brazil or cheering every completed pass. In fact at times we were pretty direct. The song worked because they have a history for playing attractive, attacking football and it got under their skin. It wasn't embarrassing at all.

This is what handsome man Dowie said on Sky too. He thought we'd set our game plan out to be ready for the big high game but were caught by their passing and moving and wasnt until the sending off did we adjust (or them change to hoof)

Hammers fans I know dont like the way he plays sometimes but yep, spot on they're top and will probably remain top.

By their standards, perhaps; but its an odd definition of purposeful football. Most of their chances came from corners/setpieces while Vaz Te's early shot came from a hoof which Jose/Jos failed to clear.

ive always thought once the hammers went top they would stay there and win it,between us and brum for second.back to the point though.it was a great off the cuff chant at the time, whats cringewothy is singing bubbles by our fans when we play millwall.we are direct but do play alot on the gound, they are good when they play it on the deck, but big sam is all about percentages and the second ball,so he likes the hoof ball, which isnt the west ham way.they will go up but their fans wont want that type of football and i for one think big same will be gone, coys

Football chant not being 100% accurate.

Next thing you'll be telling me we're not by far the greatest team the world has ever seen.

Whaaaaaaaaat? This is ridiculous. Although, I must confess my mother never told me to go get my fathers or anyone else's gun to shoot the pompey scum. If she had, I may have ended up in care. As for that Pompey fan on a string, well....

I would just like to add my thoughts on this if i may.

It was a good chant and a lot more original the the usual "HOOOOOF" away fans usually throw at us.

It would certainly have wound up some of our older fans who have grown up watching the likes of Brooking and Devonshire etc.

However, the last few seasons under Grant and Zola we have been playing some nice stuff but it has been completely toothless and look where it has got us.

Big Sam is exactly what our club needed this season. We needed rebuilding from the bottom up and he has certainly instilled a workman like and determined attitude/style in the team.

It is generally thought that he is a fairly short term appointment to get us back up and then to keep us up. I imagine the plan is to then install a more attacking, footballing manager (Di Canio?) to add some flair after Sam has laid the groundwork with an organised team that is hard to beat.

I personally don't think our football is anywhere near as bad as many make out. We do knock it long but we also have some nice passing spells (the first 15 mins last night for example).

I think you play some really good stuff and you move it around quickly and I think you and Swansea are proof that you can get out of this division without resorting to kick bollock and bite methods.

COYI.

Yeah i think Di Canio is made for West Ham in a year or 2.

It's odd really. We do a lot of criticising of teams who play long ball but we do a fair bit of it ourselves, as do lots of teams. For some reason, some of us seem to think that Saints are some sort of Barcelona-esque side and, having watched them an awful lot this season, that simply ain't true.

I can't think why anyone would think that 'you used to play football' was a comment on our own style. Its a well know fact that 1. West Ham like the idea that they are a footballing side 2. SA has changed that to a more direct style and 3. Loads of WHU fans have stated that they don' like it. Coupled with the fact that our style, whist no where near Barcelona, is removed enough from the hoof so that this chant could be sung with little irony.
