Saints vs Derby - Build Up

Slacking people, it's been over an hour since the Hammers game ended FFS!

I'm guessing Hammond will start, probably instead of Morgan. I'd like Puncheon on the wing instead of Guly, not that I'm criticising Guly I just rate Puncheon better as a winger.

Other than that the rest can stay the same. Would prefer to see De Ridder on the bench instead of Connolly. Or Chaplow or even Barnard, I really don't see the point in having DC in the squad with the options we've now got.

I thought the other one was technically the build up thread.

Well I will say w00t for Saints, Puncheon in, keep faith in Sharp. Oh, and if it were me, I'd have Bart on the bench. Even though I wasn't listening tonight, Davis getting booked highlighted how badly losing him could be. If I were Sam, I'd have told my strikers to clatter the hell out of him in order to rile him up. Maybe Adkins has more balls than me.

Well done getting the thread started

3rd game in a week will need to use the squad; sounds like Deano for Cork and Punch for Guly from all the feedback from last night, then wait on Frazer, otherwise unchanged. Sharp will come good and tadanari will get his chance, as will De Ridder again. Just leaves Falque out in the cold, says something about the squad right now!

my team

I would agree with a lot of that, my only query possibly being Cork still being in for Hammond, but on the bench at the very least. I think Derby are the kind of team Cork will do well against and he's slightly sharper on the ball than Deano.

As said above, nothing against Guly personally, but Puncheon has shown a little more in his last few outings to warrant a start IMO, whilst I think Sharp absolutely needs to play again as he is getting into good positions and WILL score soon.

Cork will just as likely start at RB so the situation might resolve itself.

Trouble is we'd have to bring back Bart to the bench, unless of course we have another stand-in GK of some ability hiding his light under a bushel.

How about a midfield of Puncheon' date=' Morgan (or Cork), Lallana and Guly? In a diamond or a variation of it I think it could work. Puncheon was pretty much playing in the middle last night.[/quote']

don't much like that, if you want to go with only 1 real DM then you have to use Chappers in a sort of intermediate role.

Morgan,Chappers,Puncheon,Lallana might be utilisable but if Derby play 5 in midfield we'd have to show a bit of restraint on charging forward.

The one and only tactical change I would make is Puncheon for Guly.

When he came on last night Puncheon added another dimension to our midfield. When he got the ball his instinct was to cut into a central position and run at their midfield. This created more space out wide for the likes of Lallana, Fox and Richardson as Puncheon drew in their midfielders with his threat to carve though the middle. He made us less predictable.

I'm also tempted to say that Hammond should replace Cork but the least changes the better (for now) I think.

I went to the Derby game last night against Reading, and they were pretty awful. Hardly tested Federici. They had two young lads in centre mid who were a bit one paced. They played one up front to start with, and he was isolated. Reading werent great, but could have had a couple more. If we play our game and are confident in going about it I can't see Derby getting anything.

Guly always plays better at home, so we should keep the same 11 to start. Good luck.

I wouldn't mess around with the lineup too much. We haven't got another midweek game for 3 weeks so we'll have plenty of time between games to get everyone rested up and fit again.

Nothing to fear in Derby, we just can't really afford to drop many points in these games if we want auto promotion. Chasing pack are close behind us.

If Richardson and Butterfield are both unavailable I don't think I would have any problem with Harding playing there. Did so at the start of January for a couple of games and played well.

He was ****ing terrible against Leicester.

We should not really have too much of a problem against this Derby side, but it seems we are not doing ourselves any favours. With all the games we must keep the players fresh enough to do a job. For our central midfield the only thing that has really worked consistently is to use two from Hammond, Schneiderlin and Cork. Over cook one of those too much and it starts coming down around your ears. It has always worked best when they do about 1½ games each before being subbed. Put Cork in at RB and you have a problem freshening that up. Chaplow is way off and it would not surprise me if we arranged a mid-week friendly to get him back up to speed. Even back up to speed I am not sure I would want him in the centre, which I believe is his weakest position. Guly or Puncheon and I can see the argument either way until Puncheon scores, then it's a different story.

It would not surprise me that we have over done things already with our 3 central midfielders, would definitely be worried if all 3 started on Saturaday, even out of position. Lallana should have too much for Derby on current form with others picking up on his openings.

I see the biggest problem will be replacing Richardson. Yes Cork will replace him, but he wasn't great last time. Don't like the thought of Harding either. We shall see

Will be interesting to see if Richardson is out on Saturday whether Bart will be on the bench. If not then it would imply that our backup keeper is not Frazer (I suspect its actually Chung)

I heard that Billy Sharp knows all about goalkeeper positioning when it matters....

Any reason why Jack Stevens could not fill in at right back?

Who?

He means Jack Stephens.

I believe he is injured.

Jack Stephens isn't injured, he played for 90 minutes in the development team game against Brighton today.

Back to the original question, it would be a big risk to give a full league debut to a teenager in the run in of a promotion campaign when there are senior players able to cover in that position.

It was a great performance vs Burnley last week so why change the winning team?

Tend to agree in principle but Adkins strikes me as the kind of manager who will pick a team on a case-by-case basis depending on the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition.

If he sees a weakness in the Derby team that wasn't there in the Burnley team then I don't think he would have any qualms in tweaking the side to best exploit that weakness.

Which is why I have a hunch he may start with Puncheon instead of Guly.

I still don't like Guly he has played off form far too long now, a good game against a poor Burnley side don't make him worth a game since we have good options now and they will probably pack the midfield and Guly isnt that type of player to get stuck in. 2 formations spring to mind, keep the diamond and pray they dont play down the wings or match their 5 in midfield.
