Casual Racism

I would never grass on a saint or someone from my City. Never. United we stand.

This has got to be one of the weirdest things I've ever heard! What if the person from Southampton supported a different football team to Southampton? Say a team 20 miles east who play in blue?

Everyone gets on their high horse about racism these days, it's all gone over board.

Yeah it's not on...but no one was keen to report the several thousand fans who were being homophobic towards brighton fans?

or the people who have been offensive to players like Jon Parkin over the years because of his weight?

At the end of the day it's not fair and it's something that should(and hopefully will be) taken out of the game altogether but i think it's in a footballers best interest to man up and carry on.

(my opinion, don't snap at me)

I respect your point, but i'm not sure there's been thousands of years of persecution, slavery, lynching and execution with fat people that there has been with black people... it's not quite in the same ball park.

With football there's a thin line between 'banter' and 'abuse'. Going back to the thing about stereotypes earlier, I would say that the comments aimed at Brighton fans play more on the stereotype of a Brightonian rather than it being actual homophobic abuse. If 2 Brighton fans had been holding hands, I wouldn't abuse them for it, but because the stereotype of that exists within the folklore of Brighton, that's what people choose to pick up on when trying to start a bit of banter. Similarly, I imagine the skates will be called "fish f*ckers" or similar at some point during their visit to SMS in April, but I doubt any of them will be standing there with a fish attached to their helmet (although i'm willing to be proved wrong). Obviously some people take this kind of thing too far, but on the whole there's not too much of a problem with it.

I'm amused that Jackanory is happy to make a moral distinction between what is and isn't an "acceptable grassing subject even on fellow Sotonians" for him, but appears incapable of grasping that everyone else has made the same moral distinctions, but they have chosen to include "being a racist" in the categories of things that aren't acceptable.

As for "why didn't you confront him?", the answer is because there are other people who are paid to do that for you, that's what a police force is for, and how civilised society works.

If you've seen some of drivel that some of these posters put on the Lounge you wouldn't be surprised. I've stopped reading the Lounge now bar the Skate thread which seems to be populated by some of the more sensible users on the forum. Strangely, they were absent from the main board on Saturday evening!

I tend to go to games with my family rather than groups of my mates theses days so it would be harder to challenge individuals as I wouldn't want to drag my family into it. I'd be reluctant to shop fellow fans but would certainly do so if the abuse was both intended and sustained. Someone was racially abusing Lee Peltier and possibly Guly at last season's Hudds game in Itchen Block 10 but they were quite a long way beneath us and we wanted to be sure we had the right seat number and row. We reported them to a steward who kept an eye on the area and the morons kept quiet after that. If I'd known the seat number of the person who shouted the worst of it, I'd have happily have used the text service to shop them. It's good for people to let off steam after working hard all week but I can't see how racist abuse is acceptable.

Too right, a friend of a friend caught a couple of punks trying to steal a pumpkin from an outdoor display and confronted them. He was punched and thrown from his bicycle and later died in the hospital as a result of hos injuries. No way, I'd take that chance these days.

"Brit" has never been used a term of abuse, "Paki" is.

"Brit" has positive connotations. "Paki" is exclusively negative and used in a derogatory manner.

We have the Brit awards. Can you imagine the "Paki Awards" for Asian music? No, didn't think so.

Interestingly, some younger Asians now use "Paki" in the same way blacks have reclaimed the term ****** (nigga). So maybe the "Paki Awards" are not so far away...

When you have to explain very basic and obvious racism trends it's fairly evident that we are not as far forward as we thought. Some of the reasoning on this thread is, frankly, quite worrying.

In view of this escalating situation I think that the club needs to adopt a tough zero tolerance stance. Anyone displaying racist views should be dragged into the centre circle and forced to shake hands with the peoples of all nations during half time (or at least 9 nations), and their seat should be removed from the stadium as a symbol of their censure. Furthermore the team should run out to Ebony and Ivory by Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney...

Phone up the club, tell them what you saw and heard and leave it to them to sort out. I don't think they will think its no big deal like some of the bigots on here

"Hello, i think i might have heard a fan say on saturday that they should give a player a banana when he was injured. I dont think anyone else heard it, at least no one said anything at the time, either to the bloke or to the police and i have no proof whatsoever. However, since getting behind my PC and polling opinon on the internet i've now decided i am deeply offended by this and would like you to take action, his seat number is as follows..........."

I truly hate this side of the game. And if I had been there I would have literally stood up, shouted what “was that **** head,” and then started an argument with him until the stewards sorted it out. But then I would have videoed the whole thing and my girlfriend is Sri Lankan and I literally can’t stand it for that reason. To be honest with you it really ****es me off that we still have this element to the fans. Its one thing to get girlfriends involved in the game, let alone saints (league 1 etc) but when I take my girlfriend down there and she gets leered at by certain sections of the drunkard racist fans (few and far between but still there) then it is nigh on impossible. And certain people on here thinking that shouting banana at an injured black man isn’t racist should get a ban to be honest. That view is quite literally a disgrace.

Sounds like he was trying to help the guy tbh.

The sporting fad for bananas was started by sports nutritionists such as myself. The banana is rich in carbohydrate - an important source of energy for athletes and has significantly higher levels than any other fruit. Also, unlike most other forms of high-carbohydrate foods, it contains very little fat but is also high in fibre. The combination of fibre with the banana's three natural sugars - fructose, sucrose and glucose - means it provides a sustained boost to flagging energy levels.

 :toppa:

To look with a sidelong glance, indicative especially of sly and malicious intent.... same goes to charming man, where is the lack of english? And you are blind if you go to sms and don't see racism. Its there, must be a sign of the times, because 3-4 years ago it wasn't an issue.

You forgot the bit about sexual desire.

They could be wanting to sh*g your bird not looking racistly, could they not? If that is the case then they wouldn't be racist surely?

If it turned out that "The boy done well" was a 6' 3", 15-stone, tattooed, muscle-bound freak with a very nasty disposition, would you call him a "moron" to his face?

I'm not sure you'll answer that honestly on here but I think I know the answer anyway. And if that answer is what I'm fairly sure it would be, you've just proved the very point you're arguing against.

100% agree with CanadaSaint on this point. Lots of PC warriors on here, hard as **** behind a PC but no balls face to face.

At a recent home game, with my son and Grandson, two Saints 'fans' were shouting every swear word possible at the opposition. C*^t/F*&k and everything else. After a while I had enough of this and turned and asked them to stop. What I got in reply was a lot of abuse. Not one single person in the Family section said a word! Not one! I went to the loo and mentioned it to a steward, who just shrugged his shoulders.

As for being a coward, many are unwilling to speak up in case of assault. It seems today that some people have no respect for others. Confrontation seems the order of the day.

To say that there have been some unbelievable responses would be suggesting that the responses from a couple of the forum trolls were unexpected. Unfortunately they were entirely predictable, although the addition of playground reponses - "no grassing" - was a more surprising but equally thoughtless comment.

The problem with confronting idiots at matches is that they respond idiotically. I was with a group of friends on the East Stand benches at The Dell. We were all getting hacked off with two homophobic guys in front of us and one of our number, DM, objected rather more loudly to their drip of unpleasant comments. The guy turned round and hit him in the face, and there was a danger that our mate would have been thrown out along with the offenders. We reported the matter to the stewards and at some subsequent games they had a camera and microphone trained on these guys. Fortunately we moved to SMS soon after as these two were consistently unpleasant and stupid.

You really don't have a clue how racism works do you? Have a look at the history of the US Deep South or South Africa and see if you can work out why your statement is so stupid . I can't be arsed to waste my time explaining.

Using rape as a weapon and to degrade people is slightly different to looking at someone and thinking you wouldn't mind a go on it.

Yes i do Suzy. He said they were leering. This could mean that rather than looking at her maliciously, they actually fancied the pants off her, could they not?? Wither way it's not quite the same as raping someone is it.

I think you could be right on that one Turkish mate, the trend I have found at football over the last five years is not for racism to be on the increase, but the amount of tasty totty!! I for one welcome this addition to our fanbase and it certainly adds a nice distraction to a dull game having top notch crumpet on show, the cold weather recently has reduced the amount of cleavage on display but I reckon our run in could see the temperatures soaring at home to Skates, Reading and Cov in April.

Which stand do other posters think is best for leering at loverly ladies?

I've been impressed with some of the talent at recent games to be honest. I've see a lovely Sri lankan looking bird at football a couple of times, goes out with a right little dweeb. Cant keep my eyes off her, especially after having several pints first.

Some of you do know that racism and slavery were in Africa hundreds if not thousands of years before white people got involved and is still rife now. Racism/slavery are completely wrong and should be a thing of the past, what I hate is the self beating a lot of people give themselves now for what happened in history. Let's all move on FFS.

Same thread, slightly different name and context.

Good to see recycling to be of paramount importance in this age. Nice to see Turkish wheel out ye olde "only white people can be racist" line, just there then.

ant - great youtube link of the position of those who believe "political correctness has gone mad". To all of you who believe this, I think you need to assess the things that political correctness stops you from saying, and indeed, whether such statements are valid in a supposedly civilised society.

Lol @ the people having a pop at the OP because he did not confront the racist at the ground. I expect that you all confront wrong-doing on a daily basis.

For those with more reasonable views, I'd offer only this. There is unfortunately no intelligence test attached to being a fan of Southampton FC. I know we'd all like to think that our fanbase is comprised of entirely reasonable people with reasonable views, but that experience is not really consistent with reality, Internet or otherwise. Best advice I can give is to report it when you see it.

Might as well lock this nonsense up.

The sad thing is they don't even qualify as trolls. Sneering and pathetic attempts at bullying directed toward anyone who objects to racist abuse is about as much as these geniuses can manage.

As you say, time to lock.
