What a season 78' was,So are you saying I need to shed 8 stone, shave my pubes and talk in a squeaky voice cos I was only 11.... are we destined for a wall collapse like it did at orient? Because this time I'll stand a bit further back.

Coyr

Not unless I can manage to be born again!

I am extremely proud to be the first Saints site to compare Guly to Tony Funnell.

Like it, one thing that I would like to politely point out...

Numbers one to ten are written in words, anything above is numeric. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, 11, 12...

Fair point, and people have said it to me before, but I can't stand seeing any numbers written as numbers. It annoys me.

Also fair point on Chaplow, the cast list was pretty much thrown together to be fair!

Oh to see the game where we smashed Blackburn 5-0 again, so who have we played in the late autumn and lost against with a poor performance, so if this parallel is to be seen out someone is going to cop it soon from us.

That was fantastic, i was 11 and at the front of the milton, great moment where a steward hooked his umbrells handle around john baileys foot when he went to take a corner

Good imaginative piece, but -without wishing to be too pedantic - a couple of points of order:

Didn't Osgood leave in about November after the Blackburn away furore ?

Boyer was here all season, so hopefully Sharp will take the vital Tony Funnell role in scoring the goals to take us up ( but try not to smack Adkins son in the gob pre-season if you wish to play in the top flight)

With all due respect to Lallana ,Alan Ball has had no equals since leaving Saints

So which ground can we take three sides of the stadium in (as Luton) and where will the wall collapse this season ?

I thought it was one to twelve... and then 13 onwards? No idea why.

One to ten as far as I know, was taught in week one of Multimedia Journalism at university!

Well, small confession, I wasn't born until December 1978.

So the casting was all a bit hit and miss. Boyer was the new striker, Ball was the string puller etc.

Thanks for the compliment, I am trying to be more imaginative with the blog pieces. Plenty of Saints fans doing match reports better than I could already!

Both stories I've never heard of, I'd love to know more.

Its a long time ago now, but from memory.

We played Blackburn away late November, in a pretty fiery match we had two players sent off, Ted MacDougall and a young Steve Williams. Their left back John Bailey, a curly headed scouse bastard was involved in both incidents. Osgood was said to be p!ssed off by the whole thing - which I assumed was the play acting or whatever - and hardly played for us again after that. We lost 2-1.

Bailey must have been amongst the most hated players ever to return to The Dell. The crowd crucified him whenever he returned ( only Mike Summerbee and Rodney Marsh received abuse like it before). I still detest the sight of him and in particular his Everton team from 1984 but thats another story.

Funnell was signed from non-league. Looked a good goalscorer/poacher and was important in our promotion push. After promotion he did not seem to feature, question as to why? Of course Lawrie may have realised he was not up to First Division football, but rumour or story that did he rounds was that he had a fall out with another player on the books that resulted in a hasty departure. It may of course have been fanciful b0ll0cks.

I suspect Fitzhugh or another may know a little more as to whether this is fact, fiction or somewhere in between.

Good read, however Alan Ball was arguably the best one touch English player since the sixties and irreplacable and we only lost I believe 7 games out of 42,so on that basis we can only afford one more defeat, pro rata. I think we went up with some where between 20 and 23 wins,so we would need 78-80points to equal that, which would is achievable.Whether that would be enough to get us up,is open to debate.

Almost right Bailey involved in almost all the incidents, as you describe. I had the dubious pleasure of being there. As you say Steve Williams was the first to go along with another 5 bookings. We got it back to 1-1 as half time aproached Bailey went on a run into our box Ossie got in a great tackle ref gave a penalty! Bailey laid on the floor giving the big man the w**ker sign. So Ossie lost it stamped on his chest then dropped Noel Brotherston & turned & walked off the pitch with the ref flapping like a 2 stroke budgie. Alan Ball was bringing the players off in disgust, & Lawrie ran down from the stand & made them go back on. lost 2-1 hence the Bailey Hating. Ossie never played for us again I think I'm right in saying.

not sure if there are many comparisons between 2 sides BUT if the fans have as good a time as we did in 78, i was 24, then we have all got some good times round the corner.

just need to hold our nerve

1978 was married and seperated to the first Mrs Toomer by then, might have had something to do with what we got up to on a Saturday afternoon Mike.:)

We played Blackburn away late November 1977, in a pretty fiery match we had two players sent off, Ted MacDougall and a young Steve Williams. Their left back John Bailey, a curly headed scouse bastard was involved in both incidents. Osgood was said to be p!ssed off by the whole thing - which I assumed was the play acting or whatever - and hardly played for us again after that. We lost 2-1.

Ref the punch up (which took place the season after the infamous (1977) Blackburn game). At the time the rumour was that Chris McMenemy had been slapped by Mick Pickering, who certainly wasn't around for long after the rumours!

Without wishing to be an Anorak and To save me digging out the Echo match report cuttings from that season, that game was played on Saturday the 5th November 1977 and the headline aptly went along the lines of Fireworks at Rovers or that ilk. In the return game at the Dell we smashed them to bits (well for a 13 year old attending his second home game with his mates it certainly looked like a thrashing).

As for Funnell I believe that he was still around the Club when we went to the League cup final in March 79 then went to Gillingham so it must have been a bit of a smouldering dispute if any. Funny we have had a few young players who have shone briefly like a piece of Magnesium held in a Bunsen Burner flame, then gone leaving that bright spot in your vision for a long time afterwards.

And I said late November. I must ahve been three weeks out.... not bad after 35 years, so don't think I'll be joining Alzheimer Saints just yet.;)

Now thats an intersting one. I had forgotten about Mick Pickering, an outstanding player in our promotion year and a player I thought would go on to make the grade, but it didn't happen and as you say he rarely got an opportunity.

I thought his time with us was cut short due to a car accident, again the "story" doing the rounds .

I remember the 77-78 promotion season as being one where Saints started slowly, got into the top three in late Autumn and stayed there the rest of the season. Spent most of the second half of the season really consistently and caught up Bolton and Spurs. Went top for three days and ended up second.

This season is a bit different, assuming that the end result is the same. Playing fantastic football and being in the top two all season, having a mid-season slump and hopefully recovering.

Can't see the parallels myself.
