Saints 2 Burnley 0 - Post Match Chat

Good performance. Back to our early season form and style.

Disappointed with Burnley. A lot of high balls which our centre backs dealt with at ease. Full backs did well. How anyone can say Harding is any where near Fox's ability puzzles me.

Sharps movement and pace was just what we have been looking for. Lallana was back to his lively best and Connolly looked good when he came on

Lambert was man of the match for me. Absolute class.

Davis had a good game. Caught everything and the throw out to Sharp almost on the halfway line wide right should encourage him to do it more.

Guly had a good game tracking back and helping win the ball back in our half. Cork had a particularly good last 20 minutes

Only negative for me was Schniederlin. Completed pass rate was very high but all short sideways and back. His negative play means out forward thrusts are often negated giving the opposing defence time to compose themselves. I would bring Hammond back and have him on the bench.

I can see Adkins using Puncheon and Chaplow to share one high-tempo role on the right, with the substitute coming on to replace the starter when his intensity is starting to drop.

We looked good when we had pace and intensity on the right flank - it contributed a lot to our shape and balance and helped the opposite flank to look good as well.

Chaplow is a long way off match fitness Bill, He looked like he had lead boots the other night, he just needs the time to get fit. Puncheon is now a decent player but Guly played his part except for the odd poor touch. I'd keep it as it is but the central midfield wasn't great today.

I'm not looking for him to come in anytime soon, Dave, because his effectiveness is entirely dependent on his fitness - more so than for other types of player. I was talking about when he's fully ready to come back.

With regard to the central midfield, Ron's comment probably sums up the problem. Schneiderlin shows signs of real class but he's too often guilty of the "short, sideways and back" approach.

What were your thoughts on the full backs, who seemed to play better today?

Morgan is always available and still retains possession, even when space is tight. He dictates so much of our play, from picking it up from in front of the back four, to switching play from left to right & vice versa.

any side in the Championship and possibly half of the prem would love to have him in their midfield.

Spot on. Every one of the top sides has a player like Morgan. Your Carrick's and Modric's. Their duty is to keep the ball and Morgan does that well. Can't help but feel he could do with someone a little more creative alongside him to show how effective he can be though.

Totally bossed it today. I was most impressed by our players' ability to control the ball...very few balls bounced off players and out today. We also had loads of great balls going into the box today, much like at the start of the season. Rickie Lambert was MOTM for me...an absolutely brilliant performance...he was all over the place and put in some great balls. Adam Lallana was also very, very good, but that's a touch harsh on the rest of the team who all played really well.

Both full backs were decent today. Fox is a different class to Harding, Richardson is much better when he doesn't put his boot through the ball. When he crosses in with a bit of pace and bend he is so much better. Schneiderlin so often stops an attack by turning square or backwards leaving the runners going nowhere and the ball back into the back four. Ok we mostly keep possession but he does regularly drop others in it with meaningless passes that get them caught in possession. I think they should just wall it back to him and get him chopped a few times, he'd soon get the message. I really can't see that he brings anything positive.

Despite the bitter cold and my teeth chattering, I enjoyed the performance today. Mid field was far better than of late and Jos & Jose partnership was good. Richardson had a good game. Back home in the warm with a glass of Irish to warm me up. Well done Saints (as for my forecast of 2-2, shows I know sod all about football!), now on to WHU.

Lambert was brilliant, his partnership with Sharp looked dangerous from the outset and those two will get bundles the remainder of the season. What a positive day, as expected the forum is very quiet. Onto West Ham, no reason why we can't go and turn them over.

Schneiderlin's ability to get us out of tight situations with little give and go 5 yard passes should not be underestimated.

Terrific performance by everyone, even Lee's 2 minute cameo! Lambert was imperious today.

Yes, I go along with your Schneiderlin comment but he does it every time not just when the situation is tight!

I said at kick off that I thought the starting 11 was probably the best Saints side to take to the pitch in about 7 or 8 years.

They did not disappoint. Real quality performance through out the team, with Rickie Lambert turning in a near flawless performance. His touch, passing and strength were phenomenonal. I suspect he is going to get a shedload of assists with Sharp playing alongside him.

A very good and enormously professional performance.

Burnley, a good team on paper, were made to look somewhere between poor and awful.

Happy days.

Great result by the team! I sense this is the beginning of us winning the league!

Am i the only one who likes Guly btw? He's great as a fantastic player, I mean just look at his goal tally!! But people seem to want him to be this all round hero who is a fantastic centre half to boot? Don't think its fair criticism of the lad, but everyone is allowed the opinion i suppose.

Sounded promising from Lambert and Sharpedo as well!

Sharp added the thing we have been missing all season...someone who can turn the defence round with quick darting runs.

He looks as though he needs to get a bit fitter and a bit more mobile but when he does its quality positioning.

I though Cork was outstanding, Lallana back to his best and Lambert was on a different planet - amazing performance.

Burnley are a good team but for once our level of performance was nearly back there to our best. Their dangerous forwards were just not a concern with that type of control. We had a lot of good players on that pitch and on form. But for all our purchases of strikers we still don't have a #9, but we do have a superb #10. Sharp as yet offers little I have not seen from an in form Connolly, but out of the two of them we have 1 excellent striker available for the remaining games. We still have no variation from the front two unless Chung eventually finds his feet. Jos just took over from where he left off and freed up Fonte to do a lot of work further up the pitch, exactly what was required. All the forwards were good but we need at least one to do something special to make life easy for us, thankfully we now have someone capable with others not far off.

Surprised Guly was playing in front of Puncheon but it worked well, but Adkins went back to something that had worked well previously. And no Chaplow for several games, I can't believe anyone would go there until back to full fitness. The fact Adkins had no Bart on the bench told me he was no where near sure how the midfield was going to work out, but prepared to change things very quickly if required, along with the attack.

Now to West Ham and the question is how much will we have left in the tank. Sometimes those extra days off and you end up leaving the performance on the training ground as we found out when we went on our bad run. As long as we keep things fresh we should have enough form to dent West Ham.

Great result, just needed to get through the bad patch, no doubt injuries related.

Onwards and upwards!

Class performances all round today, well chuffed with the result! Good to have the Hoover back again, Sharp and Lambert partnership looks promising, can't wait to see the 2nd goal again, couldn't work out what happened from the Northam.

Result was all down to the strength of our team, not the fact it was a 3pm kick off as 7 of our league wins haven't been.

Sharp's ability to play on the 'shoulder' was a big help in creating space in front of the

defence for the likes of Lallana to play in.

Says volumes about you that you are more interested in having a dig than reflecting on what sounds like our best performance since November.

Oh, and I posted my reaction well before you.

Try growing up a bit.

Lambert was sublime. My fav saints player since Matty .

superb all round performance, but for anyone without a good view of the second goal, it wasn't Sharp's it was an own goal.

I not even sure Sharp touched it, but it certainly went in off the defender.

We've had a few bits of pinball in the opponents area in recent weeks, just not able to convert, whereas today we got that bit of luck to go 2-0.

That said, thoroughly deserved it, and we're back into the opposing manager telling the media that his side hasn't played that badly for ages, lovely.

bring on west ham

Great performance. Should have been a lot more than 2-0 but the Burnley keeper played very well today to keep the score down.

Sharp looks very good, very different type of player to Lambert, like a better version of Barney. Some great runs but the ball never quite sat up from him. From where I was sat in the Chapel his goal looked more like an own goal but I'm sure he will take it.

Lambert and Lallana were just fantastic today If those two are playing well I doubt there is a team in the divison who can cope with us.

Special mention to Jack Cork totally bossed the mid field with his energy and skill.

LOL at the Refs tackle on the Burnley Player far better than some of his descions

WHU game is massive now play like we did today and we will carve them up.

Great to have a player causing problems in the six yard box. Lambert touch was immaculate throughout,Cork and Spiderman awesome and Jos and Jose quality.

NA wont say it but that is our best XI at the moment, with a great bench full of impact players -Punch, Chung and Connolly.

Brilliant afternoon, just thawing out !

Correct.......this is the first team, those that don't like it need to get over it.And for the complete idiots Chaplow is NOT a central midfield player...hasn't played a single league game for us there this season. If you want to include Chaplow then you have to drop Guly or Lallana and pass on Puncheon...which is why NA isn't doing it.

Very true, but if you play Chaplow (a way off) or Puncheon out wide, that does give you alternatives for playing along side of Cork.

Excellent win but the performance didn't tell me anything I didn't already know: when Lambert wins his duel with the CBs, the rest of the team prospers. Burnley's defending at times was very lightweight and made Lambert look unplayable.

We have other options -and I was glad to see Guly back in midfield and Sharp showed glimpses of promise playing off the shoulder of the last defender (some of his take downs in mid-motion were excellent); but whether they constitute a genuine plan B remains a live question.

We'll find out soon enough: WHU's CBs are some of the strongest in the division and Lambert is unlikely to have as easy a time. We'll then see if it others can step up and provide the same threat. If we are serious about promotion and with a full squad to pick from, we have few excuses.

I was a little queasy about not having a keeper on the bench (tempting fate and all that) but a look at who we did have on there gave me a buzz. Now that we've got some injured players back and used the transfer market wisely, boy do we have some quality in depth!

And not just quality but options.

I get the sense that we have the players to shut the game down, open it up, chase an equalizer or a winner, go wider or narrower, or do just about anything we need to do.

And Chaplow is still to come.
