Gigs and SMS

Just wondering if anyone went to the gig/gigs at SMS, and would attend if anyone they are interested in.

I am really surprised that the club have not had more gigs at SMS, or other events.

What else would you like to see at SMS, apart from 3 points every home game again.

I saw Giggs at SMS. I also saw Elton John who said he hoped we got promoted back to the PL straight away. That was five years ago I reckon.

While he had his fingers crossed, just a few years after knocking his Watford side out of the FA Cup semis!

My dad and little brother saw Bon Jovi at SMS a few years ago. I wouldn't like to see any gigs there though, because it'll f*ck up our pitch.

Thy cover the pitch surely? But you are right, they should try and have a couple in the summer, and as there is a onager close season after this season, I cannot see why not! Not been bothered by the 2 so far, but perhaps they could do something. Was more of a Lowe thing the commercial side of things. Good for the city though.

Not seen any at SMS,

But I saw Curiousty Killed the Cat at the Dell, and they were quality.

Really, I only saw the valley slags at half time in the Leeds game, and I wish I had not.

I did not know they ever had a gig at The Dell, how cool is that.

i think the reason that no more concerts have been at st marys is cause where we are not in the premier league, more games are played and i think i can remember hearing that the license to hold events at st marys is limited to so many per year

League position matters not, we weren't in the Prem when any of the last 3 gigs went ahead anyhoo, and besides the Ricoh Arena in Coventry regulary have bands playing there. I think the reason we don't have many is we're geographically very close to London and its not a particularly big catchment area for a concert.

I went to both Bon Jovi gigs at SMS, both very well organised and it was nice to be able to walk home from a big show as opposed to a 2 hour train/car journey.

Seems like a missed opportunity that we dont do these now. Take That did a Stadium tour and hardly came South at all (other than London). They would have pulled the crowds in! You would think Cortese would be all over these sort of business ops.
Contrary to popular opinion we're not that commercially sharp at all, sticking £3 on ticket bookings & pointless charging for car parking is about it.

Ha, I remember that. WAsn't it the first televised Sky game at the Dell or something? They played on the pitch at half time, don't know what came out louder on the telly, them or the whole ground singing 'who the feckin hell are you'...

Yeah it was the start of the Sky era. They used to do things like that every game (bands at half time, fireworks etc). Nowadays you wouldn't even know the game was being televised if it wasn't for the stupid kick off time, the experience in the ground is no different to any other game.

Fireworks....

Wasn't there a game once with a delayed kick off as one of the pre-match fireworks blew a bloody great big hole in the pitch?

I think the reason we don't have many is we're geographically very close to London and its not a particularly big catchment area for a concert.

The reason is that the City council won't allow more than 2 concerts there a year which along with the football season limits availability to 2-3 months in the summer, and for a venue that size, probably only weekend dates are viable. So that's down to around 20 possible dates to hold a concert. Then you have to have that marry up with touring acts and whether the dates suit them, and competition from other venues could be a bit of a factor as the stadium doesn't have much of a reputation for events.

Then consider that club usually choose to re-lay the pitch instead so that restricts the use of the venue to maybe a couple of weeks in May/early June, and they might not get much revenue for the hassle it causes anyway.

Personally I'm more in favour of gigs at the Rose Bowl.
